Would you drive an hour just to go to a zoo?
That's what we did last weekend. We have a very nice zoo here in our own town.. yet we decided to drive an hour to see a different zoo.
Why? Well we have a zoo membership, which means we can go for free as often as we want, and we visit our zoo here in town at least 2 or 3 times a year. Not much ever changes. They have the same animals, that are usually always sleeping in some far off corner and you can never see them.
The zoo in Rochester, which is an hour away, has a few animals that we don't have here, like rhinos, polar bears, seals, cougars, hyenas.. a few others. Also it's a much smaller zoo, and the exhibits are really small, so the animals are always visible. It's a lot more people freindly than our zoo, which is geared more towards the animals than the people.
So at least once a year we'll make the drive to visit the Rochester zoo for a change of scenery. Not to mention Rochester also has a few other things we don't have here in Syracuse, such as a few of my old favorite restaurants that have been gone from Syracuse for years!
How far have you gone for a change of scenery, or to be able to get something you don't have close to home?

The zoo that is close to our house is about an hour away....we have to drive to Miami to get to it. We do have a smaller, mini-zoo which is closer but it is really small. The kids usually go to the smaller zoo with their school for a field trip, so we have been there many times. We are kind of lucky that we live by so many larger cities...everything is pretty close to us without having to go into a city. We live right between West Palm Beach and Ft. Lauderdale so everything is really accessible for us. The one thing that does take us a while to do is get out of the state Florida...that can be a long boring drive.

I've never been to FL. I'd love to visit it sometime, especially Disney if I ever get the chance.

Hi kats! I think tht it's great to be able to go take a nice
trip like that to visit another zoo that is a bit different
then the one that you are used to seeing! It is definitely
more fun to sometimes have a change of scenery and a nice
drive in the country is always fun especially if the weather
is nice. I love both Rochester and Syracuse! Where I live we
have the Bronx Zoo and it is so huge that you can't possibly
see all the exhibits in one trip! It is also geared for the
animals although the way it is made it is people friendly and
animal friendly so that most of the time you can see the
animals in their habitat even if they do try to hide! I like
to go to the Catskill Game Farm which is a bit of a ride
upstate! I like to do that for a change of scenery!

The Bronx Zoo, huh? I'm always on the look out for new zoos to visit, and with my membership I can get into most zoos free or at least at a discount. Thus far we've only been to the Syracuse and Rochester zoo. There's one in Utica we might eventually visit.

We do that, though that's the only choice we have. We don't live close to one. We have a zoological farm which is about 45 minutes from us, and it's neat and we visit yearly because the kids get to feed all the animals, expect for the lions, tigers and bears, but everything else is feed at your own risk. It's neat, but the biggest "real" zoo, is over an hour and half from here and we like to go there once a year as well. It's a fun day for the kids and they are outside enjoying the weather, instead of stuck inside.

We're lucky in that our local zoo is only about 20 minutes via car from us. We've only gone once though when my husband's union paid for an employee day. We did enjoy it. We've paid for a year membership to Underwater Adventure though this year, which is an aquarium in the Mall of America. So we go every day off to see the sharks, turtles, etc. My son loves it.

I've done that before. Up until a couple of years ago I would always go to the neighboring state to go to their zoo. I live 30 miles from Cleveland O's zoo, and the Erie zoo is an hour's drive away. While I've been to the Cleveland zoo lots of times throughout my life, I really love the Erie zoo. The Cleveland one is huge, but it's a whole lot of walking to get around the whole zoo. The reason I like the Erie one so much is that it's more old fashioned...I call it the perfect zoo for grandmothers lol, because it's such an easy walk with a stroller, has lots of shade, and a much easier stroll. I'd rather drive that extra half an hour and go to that one just because I like it so much more. And yes, the smaller zoo seems to have more friendly people.

Well to go to a zoo we have to drive an hour anyway because it is the nearest zoo to us. Well, I guess not there is this "living treasures" animal park nearby but it is small and doesn't really have much variety. Our zoo is pretty nice. Last year we went in may and with the air being cooler a lot of the animals were out and about. I got alot of nice pictures. I was loving the zoom on my digital camera. The pictures came out and it looked like we were in the cage with the animals lol. So, anyways. i would drive an hour or two for something new and a change of scenery.

Yes I would drive a hour or so just to go to a different zoo. and I am a animal lover also so I think it be nice. I think it would be great to go to a different zoo to see different animals and scenery then a zoo you go to all the time and are used to.
My children used to go to two different zoos a year with there summer camp.
They go to the Pittsburgh zoo. Which we live by. The other is Living Tressures in donogle. an hour or so away.
