Negative Feedback: How lenient are you?

Hi there. I know of sellers who give negative feedback to e-bayers who don't pay within a specified time or who don't contact them within a specified period, tagging these people as joybidders. Most often than not, these people are newbies who may not really understand much of what they're doing - which is why I try to limit giving negative feedback in situations like these. The worst I'd do would give these people a neutral feedback and message them to be serious when they do bid on items next time. I was just wondering if I've been being too lenient on these people. After all, people actually use feedback as a basis for deciding whether to do business with certain people or not. But then, I've always believed in giving newbies the benefit of the doubt so long as they haven't caused me any great monetary loss.
How about you guys? How freely do you give negative feedback? What would prompt you to leave negative feedback? Please do share your thoughts.

I have never given negative feedback either as a buyer or as a seller. Ebay made it impossible to give negative feedback anyway for a seller. I know what you mean about a newbie on ebay. Most of the problems I have had with buyers have been new ones. It can get frustrating dealing with them, but i do try to understand. I am a seller on ebay, I just had a newbie buy an item from me, the next day they wanted to cancel. I did let her cancel and I refunded her money. I also gave her some friendly advice to please read the listing and ask questions before bidding or buying. I once recieved negative feedback from another person that is also a seller. The feedback was totally unfair and also untrue. I tried to get it removed and ebay wouldn't do it. The person got her money back, gave me negative feedback and on top of that wouldn't agree to cancel the transaction so I didn't get my FVF refunded to me. She cost me alot of money. There wasn't nothing I could do about it neither. I just hope she runs into a buyer who was like her.

I do believe in karma, she will get her pay back and I won't have anything to do with it. I don't even think her negative hurt me, I had been getting such good feedback that her feedback didn't matter. She even gave me neutrel feedback. I sell roomba robot vacuums. The lady bought one, liked it, bought another one. Then decided she wanted the fancier one for the same price. She insisted she was sent the wrong one. She then opened up a claim against me with paypal. I cancelled her second order before it was shipped. She got her money back for that. She got her money back for the first one after she returned it. I lost the FVF for both items, she gave me negative feedback for the first one. I had to let that go because I knew she had another opportunity to leave negative feedack again. She left neutrol feedback. I contacted ebay about the problem, the people I talked to were sympathetic. They told me to email ebay and see if they could help, they didn't. It was really discouraging for awhile. I stuck it out, most people are really terrific to work with.

Hi there. It's totally unfair how there could be people like that who give negative feedback without it being truly deserved. Just a single negative feedback could damage our reputation since some buyers would only buy from sellers with a perfect 100% selling record. Well, I guess you'd just have to rely on karma in that case.

I'm not an e-bayer but I know there are people there who try and rip people off by selling them fake items and labeling them as the real deal. That would make me give negative feedback and most likely report them.

Hi there. Fraudulent activity like that would definitely merit a negative feedback and I wouldn't think twice about giving it either. Thanks for the response.

Ermmm....I think with the new system we can't leave negative feedbacks in ebay to those who didn't respond or pay up. I don't know about ebay US or other countries but I am selling in ebay Malaysia. We as sellers can't leave negative feedbacks but after 7 days of no respond or pay up, we can open a case to dispute and if there is still no respond after the 8th day, we can close the case the buyer will be given and unpaid item strike. After this if the buyer pays up, the seller can remove the strike. But if the buyer buys about 5 things and get all 5 unpaid item strike, they could be a no longer registered user - this is strike off by ebay. In my case I would normally email the buyer 2 to 3 times before filing a dispute case and within the 7 days period i would still contact them and by the 8th day if still no respond then I would just close the case and they will be strike. Though many are newbies but they should read the instructions (which many do not) and I also have in my listing instructions that buyers with zero rating is to contact me first before placing bid. Some buyers do contact me but majority do not. So sometimes to save me all the trouble in keeping contact these new ones, I just send them a note asking them to read the listing instructions and contact me. if there is no reply from them after one day, I would just cancel their bid.

Anything on the seller's part that caused me an inconvenience, I'd definitely post it as a negative feedback. I'm a true believer of "customer service" and I think that customers should be treated really well.
Thanks for the response on my discussion!

Seller's are not able to give negative feedback anymore. Seller's can only leave positive feedback or nothing at all. Buyer's on the other hand can leave positive, negative, or neutral.
As a buyer, the only time I will leave a negative feedback if I ask the seller a question. For example, "Is the item used?" and they answer "no" When I receive the item and it's used, I will promplty email them to let them know, and if they ignore me I will leave them a negative. But sometimes, if it is not a big monetary loss I will leave them no feedback at all. I guess it depends how I'm feeling that day.

Oh, I see. I haven't really noticed that the negative option was removed from the feedback form. Well, I guess it's better that way. At any rate, it's the buyers that need the most protection since buyers are usually required to pay the seller before the seller ships the item in most cases. It's still good that people leave feedback to give other e-bayers a heads up on what to expect when dealing with a certain person.
Thanks for your response.

I have never left negative feed back on ebay but I have come close.
I am only a buyer, I am not organized enough to sell things I would forget to mail them and that is not OK.
I always give my feedback after the item has arived.
The only time I have ever almost gave negative was when I bought something on a monday and it said that they always ship on a certain day, I think it was tuesday or wednesday, and it was an item in the state I live I still had not recieved any notice that it was even mailed a week later.
I emailed the seller for 3 days before I got a response. There was an excuse of cours but we worked it out so that I could buy another item (it had been placed that same day) and they would be shipped that day for the price of the first one's postage.
I gave them great feed back but I was very concerned about my money. I always pay within the hour if not immedeatly.
I think that if these people message you and explain why they cannot pay in the time you specified then you should make arangements and mark that they communicate greatly, if they do not message you and have not paid on time then do not sell to them and put it back up for bid. Then if they really want it they can re-bid

Hi there. It's quite annoying when sellers do not ship your item within a reasonable time after you had already paid for the item, especially when they ignore your attempts at contacting them. It's good to know that your transaction with that seller still worked out somehow. Thanks for the response.

I've only given negative feedback to one eBayer. A couple of years ago, someone from Germany bid on a package of mailbox decals I was selling. I contacted the winner three weeks later when he hadn't paid me, but I got no response. Three weeks after that, I sent another notice saying I would put the stickers up for bid again if he didn't pay...still no response. I finally reported him to eBay for non-payment and gave him a negative rating. He gave me one in return saying I expected him to pay the shipping costs to Germany. (If he didn't want to pay, he shouldn't have placed a bid!)

I find that funny actually, when buyers cancel because they refuse to pay the shipping costs when you explicitly state in your post that the buyer is supposed to shoulder such costs. I guess people would benefit a lot from reading a seller's entire post before bidding.
Thanks for the response.
