The importance of spelling

I have just recently come to MyLot and I am thoroughly amazed at the people who do not care to spell correctly. What is puzzling as well is that every computer has spell check but it is apparently too much effort to click that. Spelling is very important. When I am reading an article from someone if it is filled with misspelled words I feel they must not really know what they are talking about because they can't even spell correctly. Maybe this is just a pet peeve of mine. I once bought a book and it had several misspelled words in it. I literally had to go through and edit it before I could read it. Does anyone else feel that spelling is important or do you feel that it really does not matter at all? To me it is just laziness and stupidity.

Have you read these discussions? These are not just little typos, it is people who just don't care. We are all on a computer and every computer has spell check even if the person can't spell on their own. I understand typos, I am not a real good typist so I make a lot of typographical errors so I hit spell check and make the needed corrections. It really isn't that difficult.

Yes that is true but some do not have English as their first language so it might be harder for them. myLot is very diverse and that is what makes it a great place to hang out.
I do see your point with the spell check though, as there is an add on for firefox that has it.

Chat speak bugs the heck out of me, especially when it makes up most of someone's communication. It's the English geek in me, I suppose, but seriously...what's going to happen when you go out into the real world and you can't spell? You aren't going to get very far.
Take some pride in yourselves. Learn the phonics. Read--that's a great way to sharpen your skills, because you see these words in context.

I think that when it's on myLot it's okay to have a typo every now and then but if it's constant and they speak English as their native language then it seems like they just don't care to make a decent discussion. When it comes to books and newspapers and magazines - things should definitely be spelled correctly. I can't stand reading something and wanting to edit it. I was on the yearbook committee for three years in middle school and when I went to high school I stopped. I regret that decision because when I stopped the yearbooks got sloppier. I can't go through a single one of our high school yearbooks without finding a ton of mistakes on one page.

When I am writing in this site, most time I will check if I make some mistakes in spelling before I submit my words. However, sometimes I still spell some words wrong.I am real sorry that some people take their time to read them but they do not understand the meaning because of my mistakes.I believe that correct spelling is a good habit--a habit to respect other people.

I too find spelling important and it irritates me when I find a misspelled word. Or a forgotten apostrophe!! But on a platform like mylot it doesn't bother me so much as there are a lot of members whose first language isn't English and the atmosphere isn't so formal as, for example, a published book, which should have already been proofread. On mylot it would only bother me if the spelling was so bad I couldn't understand what they were saying. I don't think bad spelling is a sign of stupidity, some people just have different strengths than others. A genius at arithmetic might not be able to spell. I am good at spelling but geography is not my strong point. Also, spell check doesn't always correct every word, like 'practise' which can be spelled two ways.

It is the laziness to spell check and the impulsive hitting of the enter button that causes people to look over the in correct spelling. Many a times I have hit the enter button siting there helpless gaping at a stupid spelling mistake. As most of them are making an occasional typo they don't mind here and try to understand I think.

Everyone has typos here & there.
Another thing we need to understand is that a lot of people on myLot are just learning the English Language & make several mistakes.
Yes there is a spelling check on most computers, but there isn't one on myLot that I can see & not many people want to open up another program just to do a spell check.
Also, keep in mind some of the spell checkers still can't help the people just learning English...
For example: If someone can't spell that good or has a hard time with the English Language & they were to spell "WHAT" like "WHUT"... spell check, at least the ones I have ran tests on, won't recongize "WHUT" to be "WHAT" & that goes for many other words.
So as important spelling is, some will always have a hard time & most will keep guessing at their spelling.
So as for it being a sign of laziness... I don't think that's so much true in all cases.
You also mentioned "stupidity" & I think that really is a harsh word because some people really do have a hard time with spelling.

There are some times that I have misspelled words due to some typographical error.
My bf doesn't like to join myLot because he isn't that good in his English and always misspelled things like "cute" as "quite"
That can mean something else, right?
I have never heard of a book with lot of misspelled words, maybe it was not edited before it was published.

I really do find spelling very important but, I can't say that I don't commit wrong spelling every now and then. I even don't like it when I receive SMS with abbreviated words that really don't need to be abbreviated. They just do so that they could use more space for other abbreviated words or, they say, to be able to send messages faster..
For some here in this site, english is not their primary language. Like me, english just happens to be my second language. The site apparently wants all members to type in english so that we could all understand each other but, sometimes, I could even view discussions in other languages.
Others join this site, aside from earning a little, to practice their english skills and when we say practice, we're bound to make mistakes.
Some members might really have no idea that they are typing words wrong, just typing away as they feel more about the discussion. I guess others could inform them about it but, honestly, if I could still understand the gist of their discussion, and I want to participate, I wouldn't try to correct them. It would be best if they try to improve themselves on their own. Even I don't check my composition before posting most of the time. (^_^")

of course its still important, but the trend now is texting style, make it a bit shorter and everybody can understand it for sure. so dont make life so complicated if we can make it a bit easier. LOL

I'm honestly less likely to read a post if there's chat-speech and misspelled words in it. I understand that on MyLot, English isn't everyone's first language and thus, I'm fine with a few grammar errors in posts because sentences put together differently in other languages. However, you're right, spell check exists for a reason and it should be taken advantage of.

I agree with you but we are human and all humans make mistakes. I think that as long as you get your point across it is fine for simple things, however for a publications with typos that is something else. A publication should never have typos in my opinion. I think that spelling is important to a certain extent however, as long as you know what they are talking about it doesn't pose a problem. Happy mylotting and good luck!

MyLot asks that we not make fun of or criticize people who misspell words or use the wrong vocabulary. People come here to have a good time and socialize some of them have probably just come from school and don't want to think about learning too much. Also the spell check doesn't know what you want to say so it may suggest the wrong word for a person. However if anyone is interested in improving their spelling and vocabulary here is a free site that can help.
