Whether it be Getting out of a situation which you find yourself stuck in. Kicking a habit. Getting to do something which is beneficial to you. On an idea or proposition. There is very often a doubt in your mind saying that this will not work, or i will not be able to do this. How easily do you convince yourself and what helps ? "Someone who isn't convinced of something himself won't be convinced about it by you either. "-Plato

I missed this one! I seem to have varying degrees of self-convincing ability and my personal discipline is strong in some areas, yet very weak in others. When it comes to my work for example, I'm very disciplined and can push myself very effectively to do what needs to be done, even if it's a task that I'm not keen on at all. But when it comes to things like not smoking or eating better, then I'm absolutely hopeless! Plato's words are so very true in this instance and it's in a sense a alternative expression along the lines of "Walk the walk, don't just talk the talk". Or to be colloquial - "Monkey see, monkey do". Others will follow an example, so we must believ in what we are doing and trying to "sell" otherwise we will lack credibility.

Well you seem convinced enough on the statement of Plato and the monkey eat monkey bit. I guess, something are always there whcih we find it difficult to convince ourselves about. Thanks James

What you say is true James, but there are people who are always doubting, not so confident till they experience something. Plato's statement is very general and need not apply. The stubborn type also does get into this situation.

"Someone who isn't convinced of something himself won't be convinced about it by you either. "-Plato I came back to look at this discussion when I realized that I'd completely misread the quote you provided above! Now that I've had the chance to realize this, I may not actually agree with that quote after all! lol. It's kind of a catch 22 really. A person that isn't convinced about something can surely BE convinced with the right argument? So Plato is arguably saying the we as people are immovable in our beliefs and opinions and I don't agree with this. If someone is not convinced about something and we're unable to change their mind, then there's a good chance we're not pitching it right! Either that or they're pig headed or far more informed than we are.

I am the kind of person who would have her thoughts right and steadfast according to her. That might not work for others and that could finally turn out to be a disaster. I have had my thing my way and ended up hurting myself still I think the idea of getting convinced by others has been still remote. By others I mean my friends who in all their endeavor come out with ideas that not necessarily amuse me. However, having said this, I rely hugely on my two great friends and the trust is so much that they are the only people who could turn the table. The level of confidence and trust plaYS an important tole in getting convinced or in convincing others. And, as much as i would like to believe that I am good at convincing myself, I am not that good in convincing others. May be, i do not want to intrude much in others life unless i can see someone going wayward or taking absolutely inane steps to spoil his/her life. And i absolutely agree with Plato there. I have felt this in every step I have taken. my mom thinks I am a stubborn kind and my friends think I am confident but I think I have my decisions to make. Its my life after all!

Your last sentence says a great deal about how good you are at convincing yourself. Yes, it does depend upon situations and some take longer than others to get convinced about. And a lot of us are convinced about things but seek ratification from those around. You should not look upon your ability to convince others as poor. Maybe they don't express it and silently accept and value your words. We will always come across instances where we are looked upon as stubborn and that happens as people think differently and have thier own opinions. In any case Mimpi i'm convinced on how good you are at convincing yourself.

I have been trying to stop drinking soda for about two years now. I finally accomplished it and haven't had a soda in three months. I don't know exactly what changed but I think it was that I know said "I AM quitting." instead of "I am going to try to quit."

Something must have happened to really convince yourself to change your attitude from trying to make sure you did. Thanks

Sometimes you just have to work hard to motivate yourself.

Hello alokn, Convincing myself depends on a situation. I have different convincing powers on different situation. I can easily convince myself in kicking a bad habit. or decision for myself as long as it won't affect others. But sometimes, if my decision will affect my loved ones, it will be hard to convince myself. have fun

It is difficult to convince oneself if it involves and affects those around us. Thanks

I'd say it depends on the situation. I can generally talk myself into seconds at a meal. Even though I know better and should stick to my diet.I used to bite my nails. But after my finger got infected as a kid, it was pretty easy to talk myself out of that one.

It does indeed depend on the situation. Somethings we convinc ourselves very easily about and somethings we don't till something happens. Thanks
