Do you ever get overwhelmed with the problems of the world? Do you ever wish you could go back to the times of younger years when you didn’t have to worry or think so much about things? Do you get tired of hearing the horrors of day to day living? I remember when I was a teenager and even a young adult, I didn’t know a lot about the world. To be honest, I had no idea what the difference was between democrats and republicans or which I liked better. I didn’t know much about the other side of the world except Ireland had beautiful castles, men in Scotland wore skirts, England had a Queen, Australia had kangaroo’s and koala bears and Chinese ppl ate raw fish and a lot of rice. That was my full knowledge…sad I know. But I was happier not knowing a lot of what I know today. It seems like everyday there is more terrorism, more killings, more hate, more sicko’s, more criminals and more senseless violence going on. These days it seems like there’s so much to deal with like the whole 0bama saga, whether muslims are taking over the world, babies being raped, parents killing off their kids, kids killing each other and the list goes on and on. I also wonder if knowing about it will really change anything. There are days when I just want the days back when I was too ignorant, I guess you’d call it, to know everything in the world. It also makes me wonder, are we better off not knowing? Are we happier and more relaxed just living our lives day to day and letting the world handle itself? I think of my Dad sometimes…no PC, he watches only his local news on TV and he seldom knows what goes on in the rest of the world and he’s happy and content. Is the old saying of “Ignorance is bliss” true? **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

Hi twoey...I know just what you mean...Years ago I had no clue what was what. I remember having dinner at a friends' house when I was in high school. They asked me what I thought of feminism because my mother was a stay at home mom. I had no idea what femininism was and wound up embarrassing myself. But some days I'm so overwhelmed by the evil in the world that I wish I was more like I was in high school - totally in the dark in my own little world.

I remember when shortly after Hubby and I met...I was about 32 and the whole Bush election was going on. Hubby's very into politics and I didn't even know the difference between democrats and republicans. He just sat there looking at me in stunned amazement LOL There's still times when I'll ask him something and he'll look at me like I've been under a rock somewhere LOL **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

That's so funny! It's the other way around in my marriage only because I'm constantly listening to talk radio and my husband prefers music in the car...

Yes. Most of the time ignorance really is bliss. Until of course somebody makes a law saying that you don't get by just because you were ignorant of whatever law you broke. I miss childhood.

Ignorance is bliss but you miss out on a lot of things. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed by all that's going on. When I really think about it, I can't do anything to change it but I can do something nice for someone. If everyone would do that every day, just one nice thing, we wouldn't have so much crap going on. Today, once it warms up, I'm going to pick up the trash from the teens that walked down the street this weekend. Someone actually told me once how much that appreciate it! I'll find someone to give a kind word to on the internet and I'll write a check to the Salvation Army when I pay my bills this afternoon. It's not much but I'm doing some positive things. I've come to the conclusion that anything positive that I can do negates some of the evil in the world. I have to believe that.

I like your idea of balancing the evil in the world with good deeds. I think I'll start trying to do that...at least I'll feel like I'm brightening one little spot at a time. Thanks for the suggestion and insight! **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I am aware of the old adage "Ignorance is Bliss" when I watch my seven year old joyfully going about her life blissfully unaware of so much of the sadness that goes on in the world. We need to know; if we shut ourselves away nothing will ever get done. We need to know that there are people suffering so much in other parts of the planet; we need to know in order to appreciate our privileged life and to serve in some way toward change. Having said that, there are days when it just gets too much and I am happy blissfully ignoring the day's news and just relax in my own little world to recoup for a little while at least. There is much to be done and if we can contribute even a little I'm sure it helps but we must be aware to do that.

Ignorance is not bliss. Knowledge solves all problems. We all have the ability to Choose what we deem important in our lives. Why do you focus on the bad? Watching too much news??? Give the people and the world around you love, kindness, helpfulness, and encouragement, then you will see a new world around you!

yes ignorance is bliss as a teenager I knew what I learned in school and we got a very good education on england, canada, and the usa, then I went to university and majored in north american history so I learned so much more about the canadian and american political and legal system, and I have been active in these two areas learning as much as I can ever since, but I love learning I try to keep up with the east but my knowledge there is not half as good as what I know about the western world and our way of life. But I love to learn, my son is the same, he is 32 and we learn as much as we can about anything also I besides history you know my training is in psychology. I also love learning about the different religions and I have written quite a few articles now on the different subjects. I am a writer now by profession as well as a counsellor by training, and I just love to learn.

Ignorance IS bliss, but it's not always intelligent or wise to choose that sort of happiness. When I get overwhelmed I do sometimes wish I could go back to the times when I was really little, focused on play and nothing else. When my education and accumulation of knowledge was something I just did for fun and because it made my parents happy. I can't say it was during my teenage years, because that's when all the trouble started for me! Haha. I started paying attention to politics, world events, the problems and potential solutions to them, to what people were thinking and trying to figure out why and if that was good for the world or maybe bad, etc etc. I don't wish it as much anymore, mostly because of my knowledge I've accomplished so much with others with the same knowledge. Because I've helped people...and maybe this screwed up world of ours in the process. Because it's worthwhile and the responsible thing to do. But it does wear on me, often. Especially the mindset of people and our governments. It's just a matter of finding happiness in my life enough to balance it out with the brutal truths of the world as it currently is, for me. I more or less succeed..lately, as the world seems to spiral around with dark water, I can't help but feel that my life's great right now. As the world gets more tension, more bad things, my life is great. It's ironic, because really, I don't have more than anyone else. I'm not terribly luckier. I'm not suddenly a millionaire. I've just enough to survive, and considering that's the best luck I ever wished for, I'm happy. Of course I worry about the survival part, like everyone else does nowadays, but I can't not be happy while I'm afloat in these dark waters. If I sink, I'll deal and swim when it comes to that...but there's no point for me to be upset or depressed until then. A waste of energy better spent on smarter things. That's just how I deal with it. It helps to have something that enables you to vent, some small simplicity, some kind of escape in one's daily life.

Hi twoey, I can relate to this and to this time, I prefer to be away with all the news and TV most of the time since it is very painful and stressful....I guess once in a while, it is healthy for me to do so....but, having no knowledge also of what is going on around us is more dangerous for me..LOL! ANyway, I love the topic!

Yes, to some degree I do believe that ignorance is bliss. I don't keep up with things as much as some folks do. I'm aware of what's going on in the world, but I don't read the newspaper every day. I don't watch the news every day. I've got my hands full just trying to run my home and keep my kids (relatively) out of trouble. I've tried to be a bit better about keeping up with things. I somewhat feel that is what responsible adults and citizens are supposed to do, but in the end my knowing what's going on in the world really isn't changing anything. I guess the one thing where knowing what's going on around me is being aware of possible dangers to me and my family and teaching my children to be cautious of certain things, but even there, kids don't always heed their parents warnings. But we can try.

I often wish that I could go back to the times of my younger years. Life was simple and good then when I had my parents to take time. I think there are so many challaenges in life when I was young I didnt have to worry about them. I guess there are times when we do have to worry about thing happening in life.

You are so right, Twoey ... there is so much information available to us now, that it scares me we are becoming desensitised to the horrors of the world. My Mum won't watch the news anymore, because when she sees animal cruelty stories, they stay in her mind for days and stop her sleeping. Knowing about all these things doesn't change anything - and I agree ignorance is bliss. For instance, we have three daughters living away from home, and I only find out about their escapades once they've done them - so don't have time to worry - whereas our 21yo son is still living at home, and I worry every time he drives his car on to the street, and until he comes home and is safely in his room for the night! If he moved out of home, I wouldn't know, and I'd sleep better! I think in our old age we deserve a bit of peace.

i don't believe that my troubles in life stems from the fact that i know too much now in life. i believe i was in much trouble cause there were lot of things that i didn't know back then. if i only know more about life and what to expect on those certain things or decisions that i made back then , i should have avoided those mistakes. there are not much more terrifying in life than not knowing what to do with life. we should know what to do with all those problems. i think that we have to educate people about some things like religions and to tell them how to understand each other though we have different religions so that we will live harmoniously. i believe that lack of knowledge will lead to destruction. but of course we should use in good way our knowledge so it will be a blessing to us than to harm us.

I used to try to ignore it all when my children were little. I couldn't face it most of the time and I felt helpless. Now, they're all grown with children of their own and I don't feel so helpless. In fact, I feel as if it's my responsibility to do my best to help try to make a difference in the world, for their sake. I didn't know much about the difference between Democrats and Republicans either, until about 8 years ago...

Well I think the real problem is that the "world" has gotten smaller than it was years ago. There were problems just like we have now going on all over the world; after all humans seem always to be in conflict for one reason or another. The advent of TV and then the Internet changed all of that. Do I think we are better off not knowing? I do not think so, ignorance is not always bliss, because when reality drops in on you, you are not prepared for it. I do think we are on overdose as the media has a habit of blowing many things out of proportion. Take for instance an innocuous topic, the weather. How many times do they predict dire things like snowstorms that never happen. But on the other hand look how many lives have been saved by people being prepared. So I think we have a trade off. I like the information available at my fingertips. But some days I do not want to hear anymore either. It is a conundrum.

The first thing you need to do is stop reading, watching or listening to the news! People are better off when they are somewhat ignorant of what is going on in the world. Better to worry about your own world, like making a living and paying the bills and having a little fun in Life

Hi twoey68, Yeah I feel the same here, when I was young I didn't know anything either and my childhood was great, but now even the local news is all dim and gloom, no matter how much I tried to avoid hearing it or seeing it, its there and I think it makes people aggresive, even my hubby is after watching the news so that is why I never watch it. "In the last days critical times hard to deal with will be here." 2 Timothy 3:1. If you read verses 1 through 5 you will think that this was written by some of our news commentators. In fact the news everywhere is full of violence. The meaner people are the more they are talked about on the news. The saying is true "If it bleeds it sells." We might long for the days when we were ignorant about what is going on in the world but that will not stop these terrible things from happening. If you didn't know that these things were happening and suddenly it broke out in your neighborhood you would be so shocked that you wouldn't know how to react or how to protect yourself. At least now you know it could happen and you can prepare yourself to survive.

I completely admit what you said... I belive ignorance is a bliss...always...I have a nearly same story like you...today I crave for the days when I was a kid and their was no complexities in my life... Life was so simple...as years are passing and I am becoming more sensitive and aware of things, life is becoming more and more difficult...sometimes I am just fred up of all the negetivities present in this world, so many situations are there where we are just helpless..Then I feel that if things are not in our hands why god made us aware of those things??? I realised that if you want to be happy you have to learn to accept things as it comes...which unfortunately I cannot!! childhood is the best time of the life and I crave for getting back those days, that ignorance, I was blessed!!
