Our company is just a small enterprise and could not afford to buy Microsoft Office for the meantime. So we opted to try the free software "Openoffice" from Sun Microsystem. It have the same appearance of Microsoft Office and some features and function. They say looks are deceiving and that's what I have found out with this software. I found it keys to be not friendly user and have difficulty using it. Have you tried using this software? Kindly share your experience in using this?

Heya, I dont use OpenOffice that much but I do use and am familiar with the similiar software of Star Office. Im not an expert of Star Office but it does need some getting used to. Its the software we used during my freshman computer class and I did have a hard time locating buttons for actions since there are actions in the Microsoft Office software that is usually found in the "Format" Tab but it would be located under the "Insert" tab in Star Office.
I have to be honest that I try to avoid using Open Office because it just frustrates me specially when Im in a hurry finishing up a project. Im just not familiar with it.
Anyway, I guess it just comes down to familiarity. The user just needs to know the layout and orientation of the software. Im sure you'll be able to get the hand of it. Goodluck!

Hi bjcyrix!
I agree with you. I have to really practice a lot and familiarize myself in the different function of this software, anyway it took me also sometime to master or be familiar with Microsoft Office. The problem is I don't have that much time to learn since I got so many reports and documents to do and accomplish.
Thanks for sharing!

I have used OpenOffice from sun Microsystems and I really like it. Although it is open source, perhaps the program itself is not all that stable and is why you experience some problems. I have too but I really enjoyed having the opportunity of using it. I still do every now and then, even though I have MS Office and Publisher.

You are welcome.
I find that Open Office works good enough if I haven't got anything else.
What I like about open office is that it works fine on older operating systems.
The greatest thing about Open Office is that I can turn HTML documents into PDF files to write my EBooks.

I must admit I prefer MS Office but since my laptop didn't come with the whole MS package--only OS--I had to resort to Open Office which is free. So far it's not bad. It's just that some or the terms they use are a bit unfamiliar to me maybe because we're so used to MS office all this time.

OpenOffice Suite are not so far from Microsoft Office when it comes to looks and functions. You can use MS Office formulas too. Our office use this suite not because we cannot afford to buy licenses but we are just protecting ourselves. Though OpenOffice lacks some features that MS Office have, we can still use, open, edit MS Office files, and we can still create OpenOffice documents and save them as MS Office documents.

I have used OperOffice, but I felt it is quite difficult at starting time. But it is natural that you feel very difficult to use any new software as you have already using widely used Microsoft office software. After using Microsoft office for long time, anybody can feel bad using any other alternative. But you have to start using it for some time before you feel comfortable. Use it and use it properly for some more time. Then you feel very difficult to switch it back to Microsoft office.
