i was just over at the religious interest, and there's a lot of people over their that claim science is full of lies and their way is the only truth!!!
evolution is a LIE!!!........we were scooped up in a handful of mud and had some one blow on us which brought the mud to life.
the formation of the universe over billions of years.......ANOTHER LIE!!! everything was created in JUST SIX DAYS!!!
claims by scientists that there are millions of animal species on the planet..........IMPOSSIBLE!!!........everything was wiped out by a great flood except for what some guy could fit on the boat that he built...........his boat could not possibly hold millions of animals, and since we already know evolution is a lie.......there must only be at best a couple of thousand animal species on the entire planet.
it might also be interesting to note here, the only humans that were on this boat were the man, his wife, their sons, and their son's wives.........therefor every living person is a direct result of the incest this family had to have had somewhere along the line.
fossils that date back millions of years???..........yup........another lie........these must have been created in some kind of special effects shop.
so the simple message these people want you to know.........DO NOT BELIEVE IN SCIENCE!!! believe in their book that was written over 2000 years ago by primitive bronze age men.
believe, or they claim you'll burn in some fiery place instead of getting to float around in the clouds and listen to harp music all day.
does anything surprise you anymore???
have a GREAT day!

Personally I want to know how Noah had enough food for all those animals to last a month. I'd need a small ark just for what my family goes through but thousands of animals too... Ok, you could chop up some of the corpses that floated by to feed the carnivores...
& where did all that water go afterwords? With that much water on the planet you'd have drowned just from the saturation of the air.
Personally I think most of those stories where written to try to explain things people at that time couldn't explain.
( Villager )" Why is there a fish skeleton in this rock on the side of a mountain? " ( Priest )" Well there was this great flood that covered the earth..."

Mmmm..you must have missed my God vs. Evolution discussion....LOL. I've been a science geeky nerd since yay high...I've studied geology, paleontology, anthropology, archeology, astronomy, so you better believe that I believe in evolution and in my discussion I questioned the whole thing of God creating the world in six days type of thing. There ARE some sects of Christianity that adamantly refuse to believe in evolutiona and really do take the bible literally and I'm thinking, crap how can one, if fossil evidence is THERE, and that the stages of evolution are THERE AND KNOWN---think what goads and turn people off is that they refuse to think that humankind evolved from one branch of the primate family--they rather believe that mankind sprung up like magic
Oh and if Noah really did allow two of every animal...why the heck did he allow cockroaches?

actually, i think i did see yours and i also started a couple of discussions weighing science against religion in the religious area.
i just happened to see the science interest floating by today at the top of the page, so i thought i would try a different spin on the whole debate.

eh. If the ocean were to be dumped out on the whole world, there would still be dry spots. People and animals still would have lived. this fairy tale shouldn't of made it in the book, but then again who knows what else people came up with???

I stay away from the religion interest because I am just not qualified to comment there having had no religious education whatsoever. For the same reason, I think that people who have had no scientific education ought not to go around bashing and discounting science that they don't even understand. But above all, people should be reasonable and respectful of other people's beliefs and opinions as long as those people aren't advocating something really awful. Never gonna happen though. Some people are incapable of discussing some topics rationally.

here is what I think
I think that interest group should be openly moderated
seeing as how SOME people dont know how to handle themselves and behave like adults there should be moderators there to control those types of people
those people think they can get away with stuff so they act the way they do
well not so long as I am around
I have been here a hell of a lot longer and I know the rules better than most of those people and I am not afraid to throw a rule book at them
and I agree with what you said
you can NOT deny science because there is actual PROOF of science

yup....you're absolutely right!
i'm always up for a good back and forth debate.......but some people just don't know how to play nice and some people can't look past their blinders for a couple of minutes.

I once had a science teacher who drew two parallel lines on the board. Above one he wrote SCIENCE and above of the other he wrote RELIGION. His response, they go hand in hand both coming to the same outcome. Perhaps one day both sides will see this.
I know it is difficult in having debates with those who do not want to look outside their own belief system, but we must remember what evolution teaches us. Eventually people will evolve if given time, and if they don't they will not survive the coming ages.
It's funny because a few weeks back I was having a discussion with someone about Creation and asked them about the Sumerians. They basically retorted, "Well, they must have been before God's creation and wiped out because our bible is right" lol. Oh well. I just shrugged it off on ignorance.

yup, i've started basically this same discussion in the religion interest, and boy that's when all the "good christians" come out with fur flying telling me i'm going to burn in hell and what a horrible sinner i am because they can't for a minute take their focus off of their ancient rule book.
starting the same discussion here in the science interest has brought nothing but calm rational people who are willing to look at ALL sides of the box.
........but seriously, the religious people are so much more fun to mess with.

Hmmmm
I think everyone is entitled to their opinion, you won't change the mind of those that believe in creation any more than those that believe in creation can change the mind of the evolutionists on a forum like this - but we should allow everyone a voice to state their view and if appropriate discuss the merits.
For instance, a sensible discussion about six days of creation would quickly demonstrate that there was nothing to measure day and night in the first 'day' therefore a day is merely a marker of time not a strict 24 hours.
To answer your specific questions - no nothing surprises me, at least not much... apart from the fact that there were primitive bronze age men around 2000 years ago...
It would be a shame to limit discussions on either the science or the religious interest groups - live and let live, if nothing else there are more lively discussions there than some of the 'what is your favourite colour?' discussions!

Ha Ha.......yeah, you're the only one who called me out on that one......i actually pulled "bronze age" out of nowhere and i'm not exactly sure where civilization's time line was during biblical authorship.
i'm pretty sure i'm not too far off though.....somewhere in between the bronze age and the iron age.
definitely somewhere after the stone age, but before the dark ages. (medieval times)

Science? Oh, yes, I did this in school! We boiled water and everything..... Yep, science was great but it IS all BS as I found out later in life. I know because I read it on the internet and abusive Religious people told me.
Hey, does anyone know if they had 2 termites on the Ark? I guess they can't have. Where did they come from then?
Seriously though, tolerance, understanding and an open-mind is what's missing with these overzealous NUTS. Science and Religion aren't always opposing ideals at all, they co-exist and compliment each other on so many levels it's not funny! Having a closed mind that refuses to acknowledge any ideals but your own is a waste of an existence. If you had full faith in your beliefs, then you'd have no fear in questioning them or accepting another's opinion; and embracing holistic knowledge is how we grow as people!
Can somebody please pass me that bottle of carbonated Holy Water with a lemon twist? Thanks. Sorry, I got distracted..... Personally I'm open to everything and anything when it comes to debate about faith and life etc. My own path is my own path! It's MINE and I came to whatever decisions I've come to based on many opinions, many factors and much instrospection. Anyone that's going to criticize me for this line of thought, or for not believing the same as they do, is completely going against the very faith they feel so strongly about.
I welcome any of the NUTS to come and give me a hard time about anything I've just shared. Please do as I've had a long week and I'd love to release some tension on your ignorant arses right now.....

A fan of sarcasm a little bit? lol
I just think the world is full of extremists in every aspect of life and they just make up their mind that THEIR BELIEF is the only correct belief and to hell with whatver anyone else has to say and the moment in a debate when the other person states their case is just the point where they catch their breath before they come back with how THEIR WAY is the only right way. It seems most people aren't interested in listening to more than one point of view.
Personally, I think theres a bit of truth to each side.

no...nothing surprises me anymore and especially not this. this is an old story. and how many of the priests have been found to be molesting kids over the years? They all ought to just spend their time focusing on the realities that happen in their own congregations and get their noses out of that book and look at what has been happening to their children while they aren't paying attention. They make God seem about as real as santa claus and then they wonder why people don't believe.

Hmmm. I don't think that the SCIENCE interest should be removed, but RELIGION needs some moderation. They seem to believe they corner the market on TRUTH but really they only corner the market on ARROGANCE. How often do the rest of us go about claiming that there's only one right way, and WE are on it? We don't, do we?
Evolution could be possible, but perhaps not likely. Creation could be possible, again, perhaps not likely. Being how we are all here right now, does it really matter? People seem to put too much stock in things that don't matter, like... how we got here. Whether there is ONE higher power or 3988660 higher powers or NO higher power. Whether everybody deserves choice and freedom or just SOME people deserve choice and freedom. If the genders are equal or not (duh, we are exactly the same except for a few PARTS).
Anyway, some days I am not sure I believe anything. Everybody lies, everything is special effects and smoke and mirrors and cables and photoshop and editing. You absolutely cannot believe what you see. You can't believe what you hear. After all, those voices in your head told you that you wanted ice cream and then berated you because now that ice cream is sloshing toward your hips. You cannot believe ANYTHING that another person tells you because people are vile creatures who are only out for their own personal gain. So what are we left with here? I'm just tryin to enjoy my life. I don't need to worry about science or religion as I am going to be snuggling up with neither one of them tonight, my hubby trumps both.

Neither evolution or creation are likely??
What does that leave? Since most people probably believe one or the other or a combination (ie. divinely inspired evolution) or don't give a toss... I have never heard anyone suggest that neither theory is likely, and am intrigued...
The only suggestion I can come up with is that we were dumped by aliens, but then were the aliens created or evolved - my head hurts now...
Help me mommyboo - what is the third way?? maybe it is summed up in your statement 'I am not sure I believe anything..'
I think I get where you're coming from and it's true to say that both creation and evolution take some faith to believe and I guess one could remain non-curious about the origin of the species - but does that mean nothing is 'likely'...so we just embrace what we have? How did you manage two and a half thousand posts without being opinionated - I thought that you had to be opinionated to survive here!

sounds like you have a clear grasp on things.
if people would spend less time worrying about what's going to happen to you after you die, and enjoy life more while they're still alive, the world would probably be a happier place.

Moon landing anyone? Or there is that whole truthful politician... have you met him yet?
I don't care what another's faith is... just don't like when someone messes with mine, or someone else's right to practice (or not) as they see fit.
And science is every changing or growing. Remember science once said the world was flat but time passed and it was proven wrong, set right, and moved on. Religion seems to stand still. Some has it's roots so far into the dark ages that they can't see how it no longer fits into todays world. They could keep believing but adjust to some simple changes.
Balance...

that's funny......when i read moon landing.
there was somebody on here a while back that had a link to a certain group's website, this group claims that the moon is not even real, it's a painting or some other type of drawing which is actually in our atmosphere and not millions of miles away. LOL
the scary thing is these people honestly believe this, and have a bunch of mumbo jumbo evidence to (DIS)prove their point.....i wish i wasn't so lazy.......i would try to find the link in my "discussions you've responded to"

aye. pretty much. hell is used as fear. the fear then cause the good humans to act stupid and accept anyting this fearful religion feeds them. Interesting, the romans were about where we're at now as far as technology. They had sewers, running water, hot water, stoves. Just no electricity. THEN a religion called Christianity stole the devotion of the roman people. Effects = no more rome. Could this happen again? Who the hell knows..... I give up trying to fix this mess.

Sorry that just sounded (at least when I read it to myself..) a lot funnier than you intended it to... public discussions that involve religion/philosophy rarely have the ability to reach any satisfactory conclusions since there are always those that can make an argument out of anything...

If that is what they believe in then maybe they are part of the uncivilized society, uneducated people and closed minded citizens! They should go back to school and learn more because what they believe is absolutely insane! They don't even think that all the things that happen to us, to our body and to our environment is all about science. Anyway I do not care about them but all I care is that they are too ignorant, too innocent, too absurd and too ridiculous!

Very well put. This should be a great slap on those who do not believe yet that human beings came to today's shape through evolution. Very funny thing I find here is that they are the citizens of the highly developed countries and have good educational qualification too bu0t they would not deviate from what they believe. If things go this way why need education and clothes and all?
