My local town is on the coast but swimming there isn't possible because of the danger of sinking mud. Tourism chiefs have a plan to use bleach on the sand on the beach to make it white. This will be to give the town a desert island look. They think that will turn it into paradise. Last year most of the pier burnt down and that was the top attraction for tourists. I think that the the tourism chiefs are getting desperate to bring in tourists. The weather last summer was cool and even if there is warm sunshine this summer lots of people are likely to stay at home due to the recession. What do you think?

It is not an April Fools Day joke I have to say. I am very keen on traveling and have been to tropical islands like La Digue in the Seychelles. I am not sure how Weston super Mare will become paradise. I know Brisbane has a man made beach and that looks attractive.

I've seen people wading through sinking mud when the tide's out there. They walk around an area of the pier, up to their knees in mud, which I think is pretty dangerous. There are signs, of course, but as is human nature, people sometimes ignore the signs. What I don't understand is why they want to bleach the sand because the sand on the beach itself is fine, as far as I could see. You even have donkeys giving rides up and down there. I don't think a white sand beach would enhance it any to be honest... and I'm sure with the swiftness of the incoming and outgoing tide there, a lot of it would be shifted.
My Dad used to go to Weston every year... he loved it there, as I do. I don't get to go every year, but I like to go back often. I say, leave the sand as it is and get the pier done up! That would surely be their best bet, my friend. A lot of people used that pier and I'm sure they will again, should they put things right.
Brightest Blessings.

I'm surte most tourist destinations will take a hammering until the financial scene improves dramaticly. A holiday is something we all look forward to, but can be deferred in hard times.

Hi maxine dear! I think that your tourism chiefs are very admirable for their efforts in trying to plan and thinking of ways to bring in tourists to your town. Our local tourism officers are doing the same since tourists can bring in additional money for the town. However, I just hope that the bleach they are planning to do will not further damage the beach since bleach is a chemical substance. Just a thought.
Take care and God Bless!

I dont know how safe bleaching the sand would be but how does bleaching stop the sinking mud? Would that not lure tourists into thinking its a beautiful beach, only to get stuck in the mud.?..lol It does sound funny, but really I dont understand the process. Tourists are no good if you cant see them when they sink out of sight!!...lol
Yes I have seen man made lakes and beaches, but I would think its different for one that is muddy and already exists. There must be nothing underneath to base it.

I think that we should consider the long-term influence of promote tourist. Due to the finacal turndown, tourisim is affected seriously but as the situation is resulted by various reasons, we may find resolvations from different sections, not only the tourisim.

I am not positive what bleaching the sand will do about the sinking mud but why not just pump sand back onto the beach from the ocean (by coast I am assuming ocean)?
This was done many years ago at Ocean City, MD and as far as I know it was done with great success after erosion took out almost all of the beach.
I am sure the place is going to look georgeous!
Thanks
