How do you feel about text messages?

I have a soon to be sister in law who is OBSESSED with text messaging. No joke, her account has said that last month she had 10,800 text messages. Thank goodness for her she has unlimited text messaging or else she would have one outrageous cellphone bill. I often wonder why people today are now resorting to texting so much in comparison to just calling and talking to someone on the phone.
Have we really come to a point in our lives that we can't pick up the phone and have a normal spoken converstation?
I think text messaging more so drives me up the wall when someone is trying to do it while driving. I believe it was Maryland that is looking into creating a law where it is illegal to text while driving. (Which I hope it gets passed in many more states) I think it's an insane thought to try and type while driving.
Are you an obsessvie texter or do you prefer the old school ways of communication?
What's your reason for texting instead of talking?

I do text some, though not as much as some of the younger people. My main reason for doing it in the daytime is to save minutes if I need to communicate with someone who is on a different plan than me.
We have a new law here in Arkansas that prevents kids under the age of 18 from texting while they drive. I wish they had done it for all ages, but our lawmakers chose not to do it that way.

I agree. My husband said that they didn't do it for adults because then the congressmen and senators couldn't text while they drive after they'd been out drinking after session.
I hope he was being silly, but I fear that he wasn't.

I think that's the way its happening in Maryland. I know in my area its everyone. It doesn't matter if it's a teen or someone in their mid 40s. It's insane and I truly feel that something needs to be done or drunk driving accidents is going to be the old cause for deaths on the road...

I read this to the family and they all heartily agree with you.
I think if people like texting that much they should immediately join myLot and spread themselves around on many different subjects.
It wouldn't be bad but trying to type on a munchkin keyboard is so irritating. I would like to see all those people out there trying to drive and do these sorts of things lined up on a street as punishment with a big giant dunce hat on. Oh maybe not! Someone may be texting and run into them.

If my kids are riding in a car with a friend that is driving and also texting at the same time, they take the phone away from the friend, offer to text for them, or tell them to just stop it. Let's all be just as irritating and safe. Pass it on!

I like text messages but I don't obsessively text. I barely use all of my 750 text messages a month. I use a few hundred but hardly anything close to what I have on my account. I text when I can because it's easier. However I am not attached to my phone constantly texting everyone in sight. It's scary really how attached some people are to their phones and other electronics.

When I was working I may have used like 300 but that was due to my fiance & I talking back & forth when we were both unable to talk over the phone. Sometimes its more of a convenience to text but 10,800 text messages in one month is a lot of talking that can be done verbally. You're right, it's very scary to see how attached people are to their cells!

Yes! It is covering too many people to its cusps nowadays! Especially students are really bad victims for text messaging. I have seen cell phones of many students studying their degree courses and observed one fact. I can't even recognize their key pad keys. I was amazed to see this, but the whole community of students is going through communicating via messaging than calling.
Obvious reason that I thought was the cost effectiveness of the text messages compared to the call rates! It is cheaper, sometimes several service providers offer unlimited text messaging services (that too especially for students in India!). Using such a technology for several reasons like to communicate where they are, what they are doing, what they are planning etc. I have even seen some students typing messages and communicating to others in the same class room while teaching is going on!
It is really bad to use cell phone while driving - either for call or typing messages! It could just take one's life with it! But I also doubt just like you whether text messaging is taking too much of the conversational skills of our younger generation? My suggestion is - Please please use the technology to minimal effect and use your personal skills to maximum.

I find text messaging to be less stressful than actually talking on the phone, more than through IMing, but I prefer to talk face to face. Texting is just a convenient way to send short messages between people.

The only texting I do is to my 15yr old daughter. Her phone plan only has unlimited texting and so she will text me when she needs a ride. I will text back "ok" to let her know that I got the message. That is the only texting that I ever do and I am really slow at it. I really don't know how anyone can pay attention to the road and text but I see it all the time. It is pretty scary. I agree....should be illegal.

i think text messaging is very convenient or useful like when you need to have a "copy" of your conversation, so that you could at least look at that message again like for example it's an instruction or address or something.
but i hate text messaging when it's like a group message to update people about what your doing (it's very popular here in the philippines). like nobody cares about what you're doing. i also dont like it when people send quotes or jokes in a way where they are already flooding other people's inboxs.
i think here there is already a law against texting while driving.it's really dangerous to do that.

I have no problem with texting but you are right people are texting too much while driving. I don't agree with that because i'm a motorcyclist and am just waiting for someone texting and not paying attention to the road to nail me. I've just seen it too much with all the younger kids out there. I'm sure there will be a voice option soon that will text what you say. That'd be cool and alot safer i think.

uhmm? Well, Actually here in Philippines, That's the way people do ^_~
So I'm in no shock reading this.
Maybe thousand messages a day? Calling on your cellphones is expensive here so people rely on text message, 1 Peso per text, and cell phone companies have it's promo's which is "UNLIMITED TEXTS" so there ^_~

I test some depending on the situation. If I am somewhere I can't talk I will text. I prefer talking on the phone though honestly. It just seems easier then texting. It makes no since to text when you can talk. I don't get the whole test lingo either. It is like they have their own language. These are my thought on texting. I know lots of people that do it but chatting on the phone is my preference.

i prefer texting. Since now adays it has been observed that its the easiest way to communicate. For examlple, got to inform someone u needed for just seconds, then having task to be done soon. eases time and effort too. But there are also instances that i still consider talking it over to a person things i would like to clafiy.

I'm from the Philippines and for Filipinos texting is a cheaper way of staying in contact. Unlike in the states we are charged 8 Pesos ($.20) per minute as opposed to 1 peso per text message. We only got the option to avail of unlimited talk time only recently but it is limited to calls within the same network. When we have friends who use a different network it's still cheaper to just text them when you message is short.
You're right people should not be texting while driving. I've heard of a lot accidents ranging from fender benders to head on collisions because of people who text while they're driving.

I used to love texting when I had my O2 xda it had a full qwerty keyboard which made writing so much fun. One fine day it broke in pieces and I had to get the Nokia N81 with the normal cell phone type keyboard.
Now I find it really boring, I love talking on much more than typing it out.
But if I had my o2 now, i would be an addict to text messaging !

text messages are very popular these days. This has become the
new age communications of all. I think one of the reason also it is cheap it can only P1.00.

Before when I was a student particularly in high school, I admit that I'm obsessed in texting.. I love to text my friends and even to people I don't know.. But when I'm in college, I begin to stop texting to people because not all the time my friends have load and I'm already busy in study.. Now, I don't text anymore like before.. I just text when I need to text but if possible I'll just call that person for clear and better communications..
I think the reason why most people love to text its because there is an excitement in texting just like a letter.. Here in our country Philippines, most people were obsessed in texting because it is more cheaper than calls.. In 20pesos (less than 1dollar) you will be able to text your friends and family unlimited.. Well, there is also some promos for calls that you could save money but with a particular time given and very long process.. People in here are wants to subscribe in more cheaper way than in expensive way..

I'm certified text addict before when i first have my cellphone but now, i texted only my friends and messages that need to reply to. i dont bother to have a textmate anymore...hehehe, well, cellphone is the way to communicate with our love ones and friends whose far from us and it's really helpful. on the other hand, it cuts our budget coz sometimes we spend much on cellphone loads, bills than other necessity right?. but the fun of texting is unstoppable mostly to those who have lots of textmates and buddies...
