Why do people still drink and drive?

I was reading an article about Cleveland Browns WR Donte Stallworth who was charged with killing a pedestrian last month while driving drunk. The same article mentioned that he has .126 blood-alcohol level, waaaaaay above the .08 legal limit. If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison, ending his career in the process.
We have seen a lot of celebrities and common folks caught driving under the influence. All the warnings in the world are there for everyone to see of the dangers of drinking and driving. Why do people still continue to do it? Any insights on what goes on inside a drunk driver's head? Frankly I think they are just stupid, but I'm gonna give these folks the benefit of the doubt, so what do you guys think?

People drink and drive because they think they can drive after drinking and still be OK. They also think they can get away with it. My brother does it all the time and I hate it. He does not see it as a probalem and does not see he has a problem. He is also an alcholic. He puts his family and other people at risk all the time. I hate it. People who do this should get in trouble. They put people in risk every time they do this.

Hi there huston. You're brother is an accident waiting to happen, it's like he's living on the edge driving drunk. Get him to rehab if you have to. Cheers!

I think they are in denial that they are drunk and still they want to drive. I think that goes for anyone. The inability to just accept the you're drunk and that you should just take another ride home.
It's sadly true though that these celebrities running amock aren't helping the new generation kids at all. They're setting a really bad example of what is cool, I think the government should do something about it. Like ban them from ever working again if they get caught several times. Perhaps that would make them think otherwise. But the best thing that we could actually do is to ban them by not buying what they are endorsing, nor watching their shows and stuff like that. They should realize that even though they're movie stars, their just as good as the next guy. They're never above humanity.

I think this issue should be taken seriously worldwide by the government of all the country.
There should be some major charges put up against these cases. People take it too lightly. They can't see that they are not only risking there own life but they are risking they life of 100 others on the road. I do't know when will these drunkyards realise this.

Hey there betso221. I definitely agree with you on that. World governments should impose harsh penalties for all offenders. The thing about drunk driving is anyone can do it, and once they successfully did it once they most likely would do it again and again. These people don't realize the hazards of what they're doing, it's up to the government to protect the innocent drivers unfortunate enough to come across these stupid jerks. Cheers!

Beats me I have no idea why people act like morons and drink and drive. Thats something I would never do or even think about doing since I try to play it safe and I wouldnt want to risk my life or pretty much every driver around me that could haunt you for the rest of your life.

Its really a question for us why people always drive even in a condition wherein they might be able to do something bad. But there are some reasons why they tend to drive their cars in their conditions. One reason is they just like to show that even if they are drunk, they can still do the driving thing. Others who are drunk have high spirit and high level of adventure in their system. Well, there are some who doesn't like to just left their car in the parking area of any establishment beside their driveway.

Hey there laedyan. Showing off might be true for guys, but there has been instances of ladies caught drunk driving, I'm just not sure if they are showing off as well. Lindsay Lohan is just one of them. In any case whether they are showing off or not, it's still is a dumb idea. Cheers!

All that's in a drunk's mind is booze, seriously. Never give a drunk the benefit of the doubt, drinking is a responsibility, you must ensure that you are well aware of the consequences of drinking and driving. Also i agree with you, all the freakin warnings in the world possible and yet people continue to drink themselves stupid and then proceed on to hurting or killing themselves or others in what may occur after wards. If people do not wise up and take full responsibility for their actions then i have completely lost hope in humanities survival.

Yeah I kinda regret giving them the benefit of the doubt seeing as there are others here who were victimized by these inconsiderate fools. Cheers!

I believe people who still drink and drive still believe that accidents or anything like that could happen to them. A lot of ignorances and not caring about other people's lives when they get behind the wheel. I had two of my cousins which were brothers, both drinking and one of the brothers got into an accident because he was drinking and driving and ended up killing his brother and spent some time in prison. But he's out now; it was a real tragic and sad situation. And as of this day, he still drinks and drives. I guess you never really learn. Losing a brother wasn't enough.

It's quite simple. They don't think clearly, once they are drunk. If they go to a party or to some event where there in a lot of drinking involved, they tend to forget about driving and just want to have fun.In these cases they should be stopped by friends or family. One night of having fun is not worth years of prison. So they should have more self control.

Hey there dany. Totally agree with you, it's being a King for a day, then becoming a fool for a lifetime. It just ain't worth it. As for me whenever I go out to have drinks with my friends, I take a cab to get home, it's safer that way. Cheers!

Being drunk tends any person to have a high self confidence level. Wherein resulting to somewhat horrible incident. Many of what i heard had these experience, being drunk then tends to drive still. Some ended up to be unfornate, some being fortunate enough to manage. Bear in mind we have just one single LIFE. Should take good care of it, if still love to continue life to the fullest...
