Is television a necessity in the house?

Do you think every home needs a television? I think it is one of those things that every house "shoud have". I don't the programs and series on the television but it just the thing that makes the home looks like a home. It sounds little cofusing, doesn't it? For instance, most of the houses have a couch, dinning table, coffee table stuff like that to make the home more harmony. The other thing is it is one of the resources of the entertainment, the shows might not be really good impactive or educative but we have the choices of what to watch and what not. I don't have a television at home but I hope I can get one soon, first it is because I feel really really bored at home and it is very quiet most of the time which drives me up the wall sometimes. Also, when my hubby is on line, I have nothing to do, it is very boring too. Do you have a television at home? Do you think it is important? Do you mind if you don't have one?

Since last week when my nephew passed class 9th and is in now in 10th standard which is big thing here. Not the class itself but 10th marks are asked everywhere so child should score very high marks and first time it is all India board level exams. So i got my DTH connection cut off and now we dont have any TV in our house and now i am getting used to no TV and actually liking it a lot. Yes i do miss my Fav prog but it does save me lots and lots of distraction and the child is studying more than when we had TV

Yes but since the kid is in vital class and his carrier depends on it how much marks he gets in this class so giving up TV for the household is not a big thing.

Yea... I don't mind any distractions from the TV if I had one because it is kinda plain, boring and quiet when no sound at home (I don't listen to song and radio very much) Thanks for your response!

Hi mermaid...Television is not a necessity like food, clothing, and shelter. You can get your news from the radio if you like. However we do have two tvs in the house because it's not only a news medium but a form of entertainment and we like to watch movies. But I don't think it's important. I probably would mind if I didn't have one though because I'm so used to it...

Hi mermaidivy, Most people today would want a television in their home because it has become accepted as a necessity. I don't think it really is, especially if one has a computer. Almost every year there is something new and soon people come to believe that they need it. I have had a television for years and I think I would miss it even though I rarely watch it. Blessings.

When I used to have the television, I didn't think that was a bigger of the deal because I didn't really watch, some shows maybe. But now I really miss it! Thanks for sharing! :-)

In the busy and hard working life few minutes of entertainment is really essential to make our life happy. I spent my leisure time with my TV. But while i'm busy in work.. i prefer and enjoy hearing songs and some light music too..

Most of the time, TV shows silly stuff but it sometimes make you laugh and relax a little from the stress which is not bad. Thanks for your response!

We have a TV, but we barely ever watch it. I don't think it's important - unless you use it as a way to bring your family together. We don't do this, so it's not really important to us in any way.

I am totally against television. First of all because sometimes it just fills up my head with a lot of disinformation as different television stations have differing opinions on some everyday topics. The opinions on certain topics are quite contradictory and I don't understand a thing anymore. The best way to get your television is by going on youtube or some other form of internet televised news where the information is updated in real time and you never get hassled with a lot of commercials.

I will get super BORED without television. I remember one time we had a major power failure in our city for hours and there was nothing we could do but looked at each other's faces with an imaginary question marks on them. It was like "what are we going to do now"? It was so boring!!! Sure we could have some more family quality time but what do we do after that? I like watching TV cause I am learning a lot from the shows that I watch...like "The Doctors" and the news that shows how stupid people can be to get accidents or commit some crimes. "Where else do you get info like that? And what about if you heard from someone "Hey did you see that on tv?"...just some great informative news that you don't want to miss. It's a horrible thing if we lose television but I bought a sony pocket radio just in case. lol have a good day!

I don't find that it is a necessity for me, but if it is there I will watch it. I find I lose a lot of time watching things just because I see them in the screen. I don't miss the TV when I am busy doing other things. I do believe TV can be a source of companionship for those who are homebound and don't have many friends or family.

It's not a necessity for me but for my parents it is.They don't really have that much to talk about and it seems to be better for them just to stare at the TV,watch a good program, and talk less to each other. It's a little sad,but it's true.

Its not a must. If u think its important for u to have a tv,u can have it. Some have tvs to watch news, for some its for sports , for another group its for serials and movies etc.. It all depends on their wants and needs

yea i hav a television at home and i dont think it is a necessity to have one.. i mostly use the internet all the time or enjoy the great outdoors.. there is no absolute need for a tv as everything needed is available on the internet.. the only advantage is for sports lovers since they can watch sports in a live telecast.. otherwise it is just a waste of money..

It is quite becoming a necessity nowadays, it is a cheaper recreation than watching a movie on a movie house.

like anything, it depends on what you do with it. if you watch mindless comedies or other useless junk, then you could live with out it. but as for me, i only watch educational stuff. i love history so i tend to watch that the most, plus our local pbs station.

definitely, when you're so bored, tv could come handy. anyway, there's tivo now, you can choose which shows to watch. and also there are a lot of news and information that we can only be aware of using tv.

Yes, I thik a television is very important in your house if not a necessity. It is one of those things that effectively rids me of my loneliness or boredom whenever I am alone and I really like so many of the programs that are aired. I think television is also important as to whenever I need a quick look at the news rather than looking up the newspaper. Although,it may not be a necessity but it is highly useful for many things and infact it is one of the fastest way all the news spreads- at an international scale, if the news channel is international. And you are right, the tv is a great way to save your house from a depressing silence. Even as you say that the tv has its bad effects and disadvantages. I personally feel that all things have their flaws. If they dont, then they are invariably expensive!r, I do have a television at home and its a life save. It is damn important to me. And I definitely do mind it if I do not have one. It would be a nightmare come true for me.

I think it is a necessity in life.if we are ready to fork out money on microwaves, music players etc then I think we can manage a television also.I think the greatest benefit that a person gets from television is that it kills his\her boredom. Moreover he can also be aware of all the various happenings around him and keep himself updated.Children can also keep themselves occupied by cartoon serials etc.
