We had a blizzard last weekend.

The heavy snow started around noon on Friday. I finished up errands etc. at work. They had kept all of our clients at their houses, because of the wind and weather threat. By 1:30 they closed the offices. This was probably the worst weather I have seen in over thirty years. Do you recall any particular snow storm?

Yes I do. I am in south Texas and we are lucky if we ever see anything that looks like snow down here. Then in 2004 on Christmas Eve it started to snow and snow a lot and huge flakes. It was sticking and getting deeper and deeper on the yard and cars and homes. We had the most beautiful white Christmas. Where I live we measured a little over 6 inches. My daughter, son in law and grandson always travel the 300 miles to come here after they have their Christmas morning and she said it was so weird because the farther south them came the whiter it was. This is the first white Christmas that this city has had since 1918.

I am sure that was beautiful, and snow is much nicer than ice. In 1971 some of my friends went home to Texas on Christmas break and could not get back due to ice. Closed the airports as well.

I have also seen some beautiful ice storms but they are even more dangerous than the snow. At least where we lived at that time we had propane and was still able to cook and keep warm even though no lights.

I do not remember that one, too much. I would have had a newborn at that time. The next summer here was a killer, though.

I did not get to be out in it much as a kid. Mostly cause my brother got sick easily, and mom did not want to let me out and keep him in. I am safe and warm, and all the snow is melted. We are back to Spring, somewhat.

The last really heavy snow I remember here was in 1965. It hung around for six weeks, and had to be moved to the roadside by ploughs. It was fun in those days though because I was young, and loved building snowmen and having snowball fights with the boys! lol. Brightest Blessings my friend.

Wow, it has been awhile since you have had a big one. I think we have really heavy snows every ten years or so. This is the heaviest I remember, but not really the worst weather. The worst are the ice storms.

The snow doesn't stay a lot here. It's quite wet at times and therefore, either doesn't settle or just settles for a short while, but in 1965, it lasted about six weeks. We seem to get the weather from the east side of the USA and Canada some three weeks after you've had it but by the time it reaches us it's either sleet or rain, and the winds are lighter. Our worst, or heaviest snow comes from Scandinavia and hits the east coast more than anywhere else.

Yes, I remember this one :) Otherwise, I remember the ice storms of last winter. I remember one year we had a lot of ice on Halloween and it was cancelled. I'm glad it melted pretty quickly. My grandson or granddaughters didn't get to go to school on Monday. There was too much snow on the roofs of their school buildings for it to be safe. They came Tuesday and roofed my mom's house! Today they got the top of the front porch replaced. They are to paint the house and replace some of the storm windows I hope really soon. Marsha

Is it some agency that is fixing your mom's house? I am glad for her to be getting help with it. I had not thought about the snow on the roof of schools, I guess it is good someone did. I uploaded a picture from last year's ice storm to this topic. Actually, I started this topic. We have had some pretty powerful stuff the last three years.

Oh mercy, I sure do remember this particular snow storm as being the worst here. One was when my oldest daughter was a baby, the blizzard was so bad that the deep snows closed all the roads, and knocked out power lines....and they couldn't do anything about restoring power for almost a full week. It was down around zero, and the winds were close to 60 mph. All of the neighbors came to my house with their children because we were the only one who had a wood stove, and we could keep (somewhat) warm and we could cook. The neighbors with snowmobiles transported wood, food, diapers, and necessities from their houses. The wind was so bad that when the guys left to get supplies, I went out the back door to get more wood in and I had to grab onto a tree, and here I am at 100 pounds, flying like a flag in the wind screaming 'helllllllllllllp!" The ladies had to form a human chain to get me back in because the wind was too strong lol. That was probably the worst I've ever been through in my hometown here.

This sounds like a perfect picture of what community should be about, though. Sharing and caring. Thanks for the memory. I think we need to start being prepared. We take "modern conveniences" for granted. I wish we were all more neighborly nowadays than we are. What a memory.

Well, we have been having strange weather here for sure. It is now nice outside for a change, but just the other day it was trying to Snow here as well. For me, the worst I can remember here for a Winter storm was about 11-12 yrs. ago when it snowed so bad and the roads got so icy that a lot of people lost power and were staying put for over a week. We did have some Crazy weather here since the end of November, but nothing like that.

gosh you are absolutely unlucky to have a snowstorm this time of year. I remember a snowstorm so bad one New Years Day that I was walking to my Aunt's house a few blocks away for New Years dinner and I couldn't even see. I started to hyperventilate because I think I was scared but I got there okay.

I am glad you got there okay. That could be very scary. I hear there are still some blizzards blowing out there. South Dakota, for one. Maybe Missouri. We had gorgeous, but windy weather today, so it will be chilly tomorrow.

I lived in Denton Texas for a few months going to college and New Years Day 1977 it snowed, hard - it was a winter wonderland, and it snowed every Saturday night for the rest of Jan.

All of the girls - If you look closely, you can still see snow on the ground. This was Sunday afternoon as we were getting ready to leave.
We haven't gotten any snow here in Central Arkansas except a few flurries back in December. I think the most fun I've ever had in the snow was actually the first weekend in March! The girls and I met my friend June and her girls halfway between my home in Bryant, Arkansas and her home in Collinsville, Illinois; which is about Poplar Bluff, MO. We try to do this occasionally, even with the huge difference in ages between her girls and mine, they still get along beautifully! It started snowing Saturday morning. By the time we started to lunch there was probably 3 inches on the ground! By that night when we started to dinner, there was almost 8 inches of powder. And it was the good kind that made great snowballs! But the best part was that the hotel had an indoor outdoor swimming pool. After dinner, we took the girls swimming for the third time that day! We all swam under the wall, and went outside just so that we could all say that we had actually been swimming in the snow! It was SO much fun!

That sounds so neat. There are houses here that have hot tubs in little enclosed gazebos. I think that would be grand on a snowy day.

We don't have much snow very often. But I do remember the last big snow storm we had. It was back in March 1993. I was in Nashville and my daughter told me to stay there, that we were going to get lots of snow. But I didn't believe it. I wanted to come home to my granddaughter's third birthday party. Well, it started snowing before I left Nashville and got progressively worse the farther south I got. Within 8 miles of my house it just quit. I thought I was out of trouble. Well, one hour after I got home, someone was banging on my door (I was on the internet and only had one phone line then). It was my brother-in-law. They were worried about me since they couldn't get me on the phone. When I opened the door, I was so surprised! Everything was solid white and it got worse from that. I was snowed in for 6 days here by myself and out of power for about 22 hours. But I made it just fine.

Good of him to check on you. It is really surprising to see so much snow in the south. This year the worst weather has seemed to be south of us.

I would gladly take the snow over the many tornadoes that come through the south. We haven't had one really close to us, but any in our area is too close for me. We have gotten winds from them that pushed lots of our trees down. I came home from Nashville one time to find about 4 trees over my driveway and I had to drive around them to get to my house. They weren't cut until my husband came home one weekend. We do get some awful winds at times! We have lots of pines around our home and I've seen the ones in the back bend double in the wind! Very scary!

HI ya Gerty: I wondered if you had gotten any of that crazy nasty blizzard snowfall? I've been so busy with my move and then unpacking I just forget to ask you, but that was indeed a record maker wasn't it? It blew itself out by the time it reached my area I only had like an inch of snow ontop of the frozen rain on the car, but the ground was so warm it all soon melted; How much did you wind up getting?? I hope winter has finished with us all but then I see on the news daily about the snowfall up north again and again and again...its so depressing when Mother Nature is trying her best to bloom and allow the blooms and things to green up; I remember our worst snowstorms when I was a kid growing up; those were really bad ones;

My daughter is in Minnesota, and it just keeps on coming. We had drifts of wet clumpy snow up to three feet tall, because of the wind. The official records say 13 inches fell. Pretty close to the prediction of 9-12 inches.

I think the snow storm here is pretty much done, it has been raining and foggy. I don't think we will anymore snow, just hoping it gets warmer and warmer quicker. I'm so sick of the chilly and cold weather, really want to go out and play in the water!

Good gosh. I hope not to see any drastic accumulations until next winter! I am really tired of the snow, ice and cold! I remember one winter just a few years ago where the snow came so fast that we couldn't keep up with it. When we woke the next morning there was over 3 feet of snow! The snow banks from plowing were over 5 foot high. That was one year we will never forget.

We love in the Northeast so this is a regular occurance here during the winter season. There have been a couple of years that everything was closed down and the roads were so bad we have to walk and push cars. But that part was fun - we got to meet people we otherwise wouldn't have met and we had a great time helping each other out.

The last snowstorm We had in Massachusetts before I left in 2004 occurred in March, We had almost 4 feet of snow. The man who plowed my driveway got his snowplow stuck and had to call for a bucket loader to get him out. There was still small pockets of snow on the ground in May, at least in the shaded areas.

I can imagine. There are certain places around here where the snow lingers. In the shade of some windrows of trees for instance. I find it humorous that the snow plow stuck. Serves them right for plowing people in.

I remember coming back from Christmas vacation while I was in the 6th grade and one of my classmates was telling my homeroom teacher "Were supposed to get 12 to 20 or more inches of snow tomorrow (being January 4th, 1994)" My teacher said "Yeah right.". As soon as school got out, I remember doing my homework (just in case). I kept looking outside (after 9pm) and no snow. I remember going to bed around 10pm and my dad waking me up and telling me to go look outside. Holy crap!!!!! School was nearly canceled for about 2 weeks. What made this snow storm was special, that I got to spend the 12th birthday in it and got to do alot of sled riding as well =).

There was a disaster of snow and ice in Jan 2008 in China.Due to the bad weather, many thousands of people can't return their hometown to enjoy the new year with their relatives! That is the worst snow storm in south of China i have seen.It brought heavy loss to Chinese people, from transportation to agriculture. If some day we can prevent the natural disaster very well,we will get a better life!

I hope that people stayed in and were safe. It is sad not to get to celebrate family traditions, but it is important not to risk life to do so.
