Conficker, also known as DOwnadup or Kido, is the latest super virus to spread around the internet and has security experts in a panic. The work isn't just exploiting a networking hole, however: it features a sophisticated method of cracking administrator passwords, making it difficult to remove, and also copies itself to USB drives so that it can spread even when the online flaw is plugged. Its primary effect is to prevent people from installing windows updates and antivirus software that could potentially catch the malware. Security experts are worried because CONFICKER has the ability to launch a second stage, downloading additional code that could hijack computers completely, steal personal information, or commit basic extortion like demanding money for fake anti-virus software claiming to remove the infection.
Conficker is difficult to detect without running an up-to-date virus and malware scanner. However, if your internet connection is running abnormally slowly, if window s defender is disabled, or if you are unable to access some security-related websites then you may be infected.
It is certainly the biggest threat to personal computer security today. microsoft has already issued a fix for defeating the worm ( check it on microsoft.com) make sure that you have the latest versions of norton, kaspersky, mcafee and avg because they are capable of detecting and blocking conficker.

Well it was two years ago. And thankfully most antivirus now can detect this virus and remove them once detected.
Thats why we should always install an antivirus and keep it up to date with updates for Virus Definitions.

Good thing that hubby already formatted the computer and i am sure that our anti virus is working well, and it is a good feeling that your computer is clean.
Have to update the anti virus so that you will be protected from any malwares or possible treat to computer. It is better to safe guard rather than to regret it and you have to make sure you have a back up of the files you have on your computer.
In this way we can be sure that our computer and our connection will run smoothly. Happy Mylotting!

Its Conflicker season now, and tomorrow it will be some other ...flicker :)
To keep our computer as our own and preserve sanity, some important rules should be followed. These are never break type of rules.
1. Pay for that antivirus and firewall. Don't use some cheap or freely available one. Free is not necessarily cheap. Consider the cost of wasted time due to slow downs, reformatting, reinstalling, etc. Consider the cost of lost data or compromised personal information or passwords.
2. Use a good firewall. The firewall should always be on when you are on the net. If for some reason you have to switch off the firewall, disconnect the internet.
3. Regularly update your Windows and office software.
4. Remove that guest account which comes as an unnecessary add-on on xp. If you must use the guest account, put a password for it.
5. Use a strong password for the admin account.
6. Use an antispyware software. Windows defender will also do.
7. Keep all your security software up to date.
I follow the above, and never had a security problem on my PC for the last 10 years.
