How are we going to find out? are we going to accept somebody else's information? or try to see what God is? Are we going to accept what anybody say about it either buddha or jesus, it doesn't matter who i might be mistaken. The first thing to find out any real deep truth, your mind must be free to enquire, to directly find out. Most books, all sacred books describe in word what God is, but that may not be God. To find out we must never accept, must we? we must never be influenced by what the books, teacher or other say, if we influenced so we find what they wanna find, we must know that our mind can create what it want, it can imagine God. We must againts our own desires, wants, longing. If we long for God, it will be according to your wishes, won't it? if you are in sorrow, you want comfort, you feel destroyed, you feel romantic, eventually we will create God. God only can to find when you have freedom, when your mind clear.

Excellant questions! "What is god" is right up there with "what am I". You are also very right--books and spiritual teachings can tell us a great deal about how various traditions percieve God, but if God exists we must remember what all of these traditions assert: that the totality of God can never be fully comprehended by our mortal minds. If he/she/it could be understood by humans, than it couldn't possibly qualify as "god", for the Creator must by definition surpass its creation. Because we can only percieve a fration of God, we end up creating god in our image, instead of the other way around.
Faith can be a motivating factor for good, but it can also cause us to forget that we can not possibly know all there is to know about God, and that no spiritual teacher or scripture can adequately explain the matter. As a book I once read put it, no statement about God can ever be simply, literally true. Blind faith, unfortunately, seems to insist the opposite, and this is a source of most if not all religious intolerance and fundamentalism.
I think you are very right that books and teachers can help show us the way, but we must open the door and step through it by ourselves. If we want to try and discover the Truth, then at some point we must not only think about spirituality, but actually practice it. We must learn to quiet and focus our mind through meditation and spiritual techniques to find and directly experience God for ourselves. However, it is important to remember that even our experience of Truth is incomplete, and that any such vision is inheriently flawed by the faculties of our perception. I am convinced that God is more pleased by our questioning if it leads us to find Him/Her/It directly instead of blindly accepting what we're told without ever really understanding or experiencing it.
Namaste.

I like your statatement reminding us that spiritual teachers can guide us, but inevitably we must experience. It's almost the very teachings of the gnostics to experience, rather than to depend fully on simply word of mouth. (Very over simplified, I realize).
I also think that it's true that we must detach from our human/mortal concept of God/Gods in order to fully understand or at least reveal the actuality of a higher power.
Very well stated over all. Namaste-Anora

Yes, like road signs that point the way. But "the map is not the territory". This seems to be where some people get confused or caught up in clinging to their fantasies/visions unquestioningly. However, this only creates another barrier between us and Truth, and taking such things too seriously causes us discomfort and suffering because we are trying to make reality conform to something that is static and fixed. Reality, or perhaps more acurately Actuality, is in a constant state of flux; everything is always in transition. Resisting the way things are is the root of all our suffering, but realizing this is the first step to learning to let go and embrace the moment.
Namaste.

...Urrrgh? 0_-
Well, took most of the words right out of my mouth.
What is God?
God is a diety who brings peace and fear among man. Who brought order when his name is mentioned.
Law and order was born in the world when the name God reached the ears of evil men.
God is a figure of powerwho can turn the most evil, good.

Nobody can say what "god" is, in the true sense of "knowing". It's all human speculation and pretending that we "know" what we're talking about when we use the word "god". The truth is that we don't know what we're talking about. "God" is just a vague idea floating around in our heads. And we pretend that we know the answer.

our God is a living God, and he really exists, it is true that faith that we have is influential, we have not really met god. And it shouldn't be just by reading spiritual books and teachers. But its the fact of belief. whenever you go to church or any sacred place it is the matter of belief and the experience that you get on receiving the touch of the god. It is also true that we go towards the god only during the time when we need him, but god loves us a lot, do u think that this universe, animals, humans, human brain is everything automatic or natural? no it isn't. its the miracle of the god

yeah God is exist and you are the manifest. does the truth can find through someone else? you are influenced by sacred books, so you find God as the books wanna find. That's why when you need help, your mind can create God as what you want, Truth only can find when we have silent mind, tame mind, disappear all desires, wishes, wants, all assertion, really quiet mind.

I believe in God and i strongly feel that there is some mysterious force controlling all our day to day activities and we are all moving according to that force.God is bigger than the biggest (so big the universe is within Him).God is subtler than the smallest thing a human mind could conceive.God resides in the heart of every living being.God is the supreme creator of the universe. The Vedas state in scores of scriptural verses that everything is God. That Divinity is one without a second, beyond all forms, names and qualities. That divinity is an existence that is eternally imperishable and indivisible.
Everything is one with God in its essential nature, including you as a soul. There is only one field of absolute Being where all divisions and separations merge into one existence

Hi OneEyedGiant, Great discussion, thank you. I agree that we must seek to find God for ourselves and he/she cannot be found on the outside. We can read all the books we want and we can learn a lot, but to know God we must go within. The God that most people worship was created by man a long time ago. That doesn't mean that God does not exist, but simply that we have gotten it all wrong. Blessings.

God cannot be an entity, because entities are created, while God is the Creator. God IS a type of force which no human can ever visualise. The Force that binds the universe, ensuring that things happen for a reason which the frail human minds may be unable to understand. A very complex Force which is present everywhere, hence the conviction among some people that God is in us, and we are part of God.
all the best,
rosdimy

I agree that your mind should be open in order to experience your God. It is difficult to distance ourselves from the perception of the Divine that we have been brought up with. I have nothing against religion at all but growing up as a Catholic I was taught to fear God and that my bad deeds would lead me to burn forever in hell. Now I realise that there is so much more to Catholicism than that and I respect the Faith but as a kid that was the simplistic message I received and it didn't occur to me until much later that perhaps I could make up my own mind how I perceive God being through the Church or not.
The answer was in my heart and it came to me while sitting on a river bank staring at the water; I felt that I was looking at God and He was indeed all around me; at that moment I was God!
God is not a name it is a feeling, an experience and it cannot be accurately described in words. Just open your heart and your eyes and you will see Him too!

i think u must find God within urself. this is challenging for most of us but i believe that it can also be a way of self discovery, through which people can learn more about themselves and the world around them. i doubt we can discover God in others...
