Is it Big Brother?

United States
April 9, 2009 1:56pm CST
Every time I hear anything about GPS devices, I feel a vague discomfort. Finally, I think I know why. It seems as if we've brought Big Brother into our lives gleefuly. No matter where we go or what we do, someone's watching and making note of us. Maybe some people find comfort in this, but I feel as if a totalitarian power has joined so many of our lives that we don't realize what has happened. We know nothing is really private online, or an a cell phone or wi-fi, but I'm not sure many people realize they're being watched all the time. I'd rather read a map for directions or call 911 if I need help. Do you feel sort of like George Orwell's writing our lives, eoo?

I have a GPS and yes, it will tell you where you are, it will not however tell others where you are. It is just a piece of electronics that gives you directions to where you are going, and no offense, but it scares me to watch people drive downt the street reading a map or piece of paper...that is not very safe, however people dont seem to mind almost getting ran off the road when some one is reading directions, but gets mad when someone is texting or talking on the phone...same concept, your attention is not on the road. with a gps though, it talks to you so you can keep your eyes on the road and still get to where you are going.

I never even considered reading a map while driving. It's something to pull off the road for, just like cell phones. If the GPS can have its eye on you, why can't anyone with a little computer skill joinin on that information?

If the CSI shows I watch are accurate, all modern cell phones have GPS in them, so if the government agency has your phone number, it can trace you whenever it wants. Ditto through your car GPS through your registration. And the CCTV cameras are turning up just about everywhere. Yes, it is Big Brother. That's just one of the many reasons I so enjoy living in a semi-rural area, don't have GPS in my car, and don't have a modern cell-phone. Lash

I know he is doing the writing, I do not allow myself to become distracted by what is going on in the world, it will go as it goes and I have enough on my plate to deal with what I must to learn and to grow. A good hit by an asterold will cure all of the problems brought by man to mother earth.

It makes me wonder about that too.....the government is hiding something. Why else are scientists trying to figure out how to turn one away from the earth? I guesss I am getting a little paranoid..lol. But Revelation does say a 'mountain' falls from the sky into the sea....how else would a 1st century person describe an asteroid?

Horrifying, isn't it? Makes me want to be a hermit! I have nothing to hide, but I don't invite others into my private life, either. How can we avoid this? I'm not at all sure we can.

Hi Joanne, It makes me wonder how many people have ever heard of Big Brother other than the TV show. For that matter, I wonder how many people have ever heard of George Orwell!! How do you like the cameras they have placed on top of the stop lights? The ones that are blue at night? Have you seen them? All these things are suppose to make us feel safer. "The Land of The Free".

Hi, :eenie! I know we're supposed to feel as if we're safer with all these devices in use, but they really creep me out. I still teach Orwell, and everyone else I know does, so I don't really think his work is so obscure. I just can't help thinking of it every time I see those cameras or hear my friends' cars give directions (mine's 23 years old, so it doesn't have any of the new goodies!). That commercial about safeguarding someone's house -- they detect someone in the house, or they think you might have a need for medical care -- just makes me wonder why not call 911 and maintain privacy. I have nothing to hide, but I don't want to be part of an evil machine. There's too much of our personal information out there for anyone to use as they wish. If you doubt it, just check your span file! XOXO, Joanne

Jo, I would never doubt anything you say because I know that you know what you are talking about. I also agree with what you are saying. This internet really scares me lately. I've received a couple emails from so called ebay sellers claiming I needed to do something about something I bought recently. They turned out to be what ebay calls Spoofs. I knew I hadn't bought anything and questioned it with ebay and not responded to their email. Nothing is safe. We have to be very careful. We are living in an unknown world. I'm afraid it is only going to get worse before it gets better.xoxoxo leenie

Couldn't agree with you more, Big Brother is turning into NWO and at the end of the day privacy is going to be something of the past....it's all about Problem/Solution the more us humans complain about the state of the world, the more Solutions are put in place by big brother to keep us SAFE (well that's what they tell us) it's really to keep us controlled like a dictatorship

Total control is being made entirely too easy, in the name of protecting us. Security cameras have resulted in many crimes being solved, but they've also watched the majority of us, who are honest, crime-free and not in need of watching for too long. It's a horrible balance to try - safety or snooping?

While satellites show your location, that location does not get transmitted to anyone else. And even if it did, it would be impossible to know who each person was behind each GPS, so I doubt this is a problem.

If you can't get them to work...go to youtube and search Rachael Maddow/Obama and FEMA camps...real strange that I can't get these to work right?

Like any technology, the GPS can be misused. It most certainly can be used by the government to keep a tab on its 'subjects'. George Orwell had predicted the use of CCTV in his novel when CCTV(as we know them today) were not widely used. The GPS can be a CCTV for the whole world . Well, as always, we citizens are left with no choice but to strngthen our civil bodies and democratic institutions in order to safegaurd our rights.

The problem with that is that we don't need to have anything to hide to be concerned. Just the fact that somebody's peeping in our windows is enough to make anyone's skin crawl!

The scary thing is that GPS devices aren't just in GPS devices. Some phones have them. If your cell phone, you dial 911 during an accident and you can't talk, that comes in handy. But what if that information gets into the wrong hands? Many times abused and domestic violence victims are given a cell phone only to find out their safe house isn't safe. Many times abusers can find the GPS coordinants by using their cell phone. So now, they're told to dump their cell phones and get a "clean" cell phone, one the abuser can't track. So a GPS is a double-edged sword.

Yes, privacy is. Plus, right now we're a free country (more or less), but if we were taken over. . ..

As far as I know, there's no real way out. At the end of every president's term, we seem to find out about a LOT of very dirty tricks played on the public. Some say there's nothing to worry about if you have nothing to hide, but I disagree. Our privacy is an important value.

Perhaps. GPS, the Internet, WiFi, and the like, have their advantages. Technology is a wonderful thing. But I too know that there are those, who would definitely abuse its greatness to the dis-advantage of others. CONTROL, has for centuries been a passion, most difficult to resist. cdrxo

It really feels lousy to have no control at all. We're all on somebody's radar, and I don't think we should be there. While I know we can avoid cell phones, wifi, etc., which we know are easily "tapped", we can't avoid most of the things people do to track us. Check out ladybug's response above.

Joanne, I skimmed this discussion and posted a comment. Then I read that you and all the teachers you know require Orwell to be read. Well, I must tell you that your corner of the world is an anomaly. I've talked Orwell coast to coast to college students and most don't know Orwell from Adam. Honest. Keep up the good work! Orwell is still in-print and causing difficulties for those who want to perfect their tyrannies. Steve

Maybe it's because we live in Miami, which some refer to as North Havana that we try to be sure kids know what could happen if they're not very careful!

There is a good and bad side of every new things. Like we got a chace to bring camera with mobile and shoot whatever and whenever but the bad side was that dirty mms's are coming into the act. So, it is up to us that how we use new technologies.

The problem with so many of these devices is that we have no choice and no control.

I will freely admit that I have not been paying attention to all the Big Brother stuff- and to be honest with you I'm not sure there is anything we can do about it. At this point all we can do is life our lives and hope for the best. I will admit that when the government started asking book stores for credit card info on customers I was glad I didn't have one. I buy books on many topics and at least 2 of those topics could potentially be a problem. SO even if I had a credit card I would not have purchased books with it. But the fact is that my library records would show at least one topic. I'm not overly worried about camera's since I have done nothing to be worried about- nor am I overly worried about computer searches for the same reason. is there anything we can do? And Cobra you may be using Orwell in classes but I never had a teacher who did.... I am familiar with 1984 though.

Nice to see you read the other responses. I'm not worried about these things because I have anything to hide, because I don't. However, privacy isn't something to be invaded. Alll of us shouldn't be in the sights of anyone who wants to have a look at us. It's certainly not an expression of the freedom we cherish.

It should be required for conservatives, too, so they can see what happens when some people think they know what's best for everyone else!

Cobrateacher...I have come to the conclusion that the terms 'conservative' and 'liberal' are just a way to keep us all at each others throats so we don't notice that we are being herded into holding pens. :) Sorta a divide and conquer tecnique of the real powers that be.

Yes, I feel that way too, and also with facebook, myspace, is like if all the information of all the people of the entire world is there in the internet, you only have to search for it. I even heard an amazing new, that the NASA was experimented with technology to read the mind of the other, and that way they could know what are the next movements of the enemy, that is, to use it at wars, mainly. It sound to me as an extraterrial thing, I never though something like that it would be possible, but it´s clear to me that real life is even more stranger than fiction

Anyone seen the movie...Minority Report? Those camps set up around the country..they're for those who MAY commit a crime in the future. :) Why else make lists of 'possible terrorists' from veterans and Christians? Who's next guys....who will be suspect next?

Never make the mistake of thinking others have the same values or morals as YOU do. Everyone speaks from THEIR own worldview... Especially, don't make that mistake with those who've sworn to destroy you. I could elaborate...but I'd like to keep using mylot in the future.
