Ever Wake Up With One Hand Totally Asleep?

I woke up this morning and my left hand felt totally dead!! I had to shake it for about 5 minutes before I got any feeling into it, and my ring and baby fingers still feel weird. Hubby had that happen to him a few too many times, and actually had to have a nerve re-routed. AARRGGHH. Now he can't hang his arm out the car window without feeling like he banged his funny bone.
Anyway, last few mornings in a row, my hand has tingled. It's annoying!
Does this ever happen to anyone else? What do you do about the problem?

Not only is waking up with one hand asleep normal for me, I also tend to wake up not being able to feel my arms or legs at all. It is a scary feeling. I can see that they are there, but there is absolutely no feeling in them. It takes me a few minutes to regain feeling. My biggest fear is that one day, I won't be able to regain feeling.

Sometimes this happens when nerves are pinched in your spinal column. Arthritis of the vertebrae can cause this feeling.

I've had that happen before too. Its weird, eventually it wakes up and resumes its duty of shaking its finger at my children.

I do it too often myself, but the feeling always comes back
now, my mother woke up with her hand feeling asleep and it turned out she had a couple of minor strokes, but the feeling didn't come back almost as soon as she rolled off it like mine does

This happens to me all the time. I can sit for a few minutes with my joint still and it starts to get the tingly pickles in it. I also get them a lot in my feet. I suffer from neuropathy from being a diabetic and it is hard to find a comfortable position to sit or have my joints positioned because if they are tweaked even in the smallest way the start to get painful and then go numb. I have never heard of the hands falling asleep being a "sign" of strokes. I guess that is something to watch for then. I hope your mom is feeling better now and thanks for posting this.

It has even happened with me few times.
It happen whenever you sleep in a position which is putting most of the body weight on a particular part of the body.
In your case it was your hand.
I think is just for few minutes when you wake up after that your hand will be normal again.

When i wake up and my hand is asleep it tends to be because i was sleeping with my hand tucked under my head and its bent at the wrist at a sharp right angle...otherwise someone is laying on my hand. I hate the feeling because when i reach out to turn off the alarm i cant feel the button to turn it off.

HI danish!!!
Well I don't really have the problem as you are mentioning and other friends are mentioning over here. But the problem may be due to some wrong position of sleeping. Don't you think so....
But I surely have other problem than this...I guess you are not talking about this. Sometimes while sleeping I would like to move, but can't move any part of the body. I feel like to get help but can't even shout at all. I wish some one would touch me and make me able to move...And after few seconds after some effort I become able to move. I don't know what this is called. Don't you feel so?
Waiting for your response...
Thankyou!

Yes it happens sometimes to me also when i accidentally turn while sleeping and sleep on one hand & the body weight comes on that hand then the next day i wake up in the morning i feel it to be motionless for sometime & more warm than the entire body. I try to sleep more on my back for that reasons.

yeah, this happens to me quite alot, i suppose it happens because you've been asleep and your hand has been locked in a certain position or something all throughout the night, i think that may be the cause of it but im not too sure. But yeah it happens to my hand, or my foot sometimes, its like even though you don't wanna move it because it will hurt, you have to to make yourself move again lol, i totally agree its soo annoying!

It has happened to me off and on all of my life. Usually it means it is time to find and train myself into a new pillow and a new sleeping position. I do find that I contort my hand weird ways in my sleep and that it hurts and tingles when I wake up.

I do all the time. Last night, I woke up about 3 a.m. and had to get up and head for the bathroom. As I stood up, I realized that as I'd slept with my left arm thrown around my husband's waist, my right arm had been tucked beneath my body for several hours and it was useless. It took about 15 minutes to get it to where it wasn't tingling anymore.

My hands are completely numb most mornings. My rheumatologist sent me to have a nerve conduction study done on my right arm because she noticed muscle mass loss in that hand. I have nerve damage and also carpal tunnel syndrome.
But, with your ring and pinky fingers still tingling, I'd say you pinched a nerve in your elbow. That nerve affects those fingers. If it were carpal tunnel syndrome (in your wrist), your thumb and first two fingers would be tingling.
Give it a few more days and, if those fingers are still tingling, you should have it checked out but don't worry about it until a few days have passed. It sounds like it's most likely just a pinched nerve like your arm was twisted in a way that affected that nerve in your elbow while you slept. They can take a little while before getting back to normal.

I know what you mean. This hasn't happened to me too many times luckily but on a few occasions when I have awoken from a mid-day nap, I have felt that one arm feels a little 'heavier' than it should and I have had to give it a good shake a few times for it to feel normal again.
