Is the economy affecting you?

I'm a cake decorator. I muse, sometimes thinking of how I work in a place that could be considered a luxury. Thank goodness people still get married and still want to buy birthday cakes and decorated cookies! My daughter worked for Owens Corning and got laid off a couple of months ago and it looks like they won't be rehiring anytime soon. How are things in your neck of the woods?

So far i still have a job to support myself and my family, im working in the food industry in an internetional company. I know salles are decreasing, but we still doing money. However, everytime i go shopping (domestic stuff), i spend much more then before to buy the same things. I dont understand how they play finance things over here, coz people dont have money, they are buying less and to complement salles profits the increse prices. I really dont know how we are going to keep going like this, im a bit worry about, and not just for me but for everybody else in this country. Best wishes and good business for you

I've lost my job in September, and now since I live at home with my mom, the only thing I pay is my phone and bed bill; between what money I hustle or what have you, I do alright. I don't like the fact I'm not working, but I must say I never was hungry. So yes it affects me and I surely didn't like what happened to me, but lately I've been thinking real hard of making something happen for me more than depend on someone else to make it happen for me. So I learned to make a pound cake; hopefully I can do that as well as type;

i work in a band and yes we. the whole band can feel the economy very hurting. sometimes we have work but they pay is to small. some of the place we use to work at no longer gets a full band they are more likely to get duos and acoustic bands with a few members. it is hard and hurting at the same time, i hope it gets better.

I think it really is affecting all of us including me. Even I as a student really do notice it's effects since in our school there are less students enrolling because they don't have enough money to get enrolled and pay for the tuition for the whole year and our school needed to add scholars for less privileged students to receive quality education. It really is sad.

It is not bad here in Manitoba. We have a mixed economy, but we do find that some things are more expensive because of the laid offs down in the States and your dollar falling. We find the food prices have gone up. Usually it cost around $80 a week for groceries even when we needed toilet paper and soap, but now it costs $100 and there is just the two of us. As I wrote in another discussion, the Ipod has gone up $20, and I suppose other electronic stuff has gone up, and I think it is due to that they are not making as much because they laid off so many people. Now an ipod or new computer are not much, but what happens when one needs a new water heater, or needs the windows replaced. The recession makes it hard for all of us.

for sure it is I am in wedding business and only have good time selling wedding items because I don't sell at retail price anymore, only wholesale I sell a lot on ebay, I can't call it profit, but at least they are not sitting on my shelves not earning anything my husband is badly affected. he works in manufacturing company that is not related to automotive, but it was acquired by a corporation that mainly sells automotive parts, so production cut is felt in all the subsidiary companies. Yet I have nothing against people that are against bailout to automotive companies. it's tax payer's money, it should be used for the good of all tax payers. what about small businesses with small capital that need help? the millions of dollars bail out for huge companies that are not well managed, can help millions of new and small businesses. what about people losing their jobs or now their homes because unfair treatment? don't they pay tax too? anyway last year was hard and this year is harder for us but hubby and I will keep on striving to survive. I'm sure honest hard work will pay off in the end.

To say the economy is not affecting me is an understatement. I am still holding my job. The company has planned a pay cut and has carried it out. However, the company is still hiring. I am apprehensive if they are replacing. Anyway, I am making plans just in case - digging into my own pocket to upgrade myself when most would want the company to pay.

Hello estherlou. If it is related to my teaching work, the economy is not affecting me because right now I am still having my stable job with the same amount of salary, but if it is related to getting daily food and necessities, then I think that it does, because the prices for many things are very high, much higher than they used to though some of the prices for some certain necessities or food are getting lower. Also we are having fewer students because of the national family planning. So I guess that there will be fewer teachers in the future with fewer and fewer students based on this level. By then teachers will be affected a lot economically / financially as well as in job hunting. Thank you for the discussion, friend.

although there has been a slew of retrenchment in our company, luckily our department has not been affected by it, at least not yet. so right now i'm just thankful I have a job. slowly, we're adding up clients to our roster, so hopefully things would be picking up soon. crossing my fingers.

I'm a full-time department manager at an entertainment store. I'm not in any danger of being laid off anytime soon, but I'm definitely feeling the crunch. I've been scheduled for part-time hours for the last several weeks. I don't know what I'd do if my husband hadn't been picking up extra shifts at work to help make up the difference. I'd consider getting another job, but there are hardly any to be had. I really hope things pick up by 2010 like they're predicting they will...

I make my living as a truck driver, using my own one ton pickup and a gooseneck dual tandem axle trailer. Technically I'm self-employed because I pay my own taxes. My services are leased to a small family owned company that has several local delivery contracts that deliver all over Texas. The main items I deliver are metal roll up doors for self storage facilities like " Uncle Bob's ", "Public Storage" and the like. We are just now experiencing a slight slowdown in business I imagine may have something to do with a slowdown in construction. It is not really serious enough that I am worried about it too much as we only have 4 full-time drivers and I am #2 in driver callout. I used to be a deputy sheriff for the 4th largest Sheriff's Department in the U.S. and have 16 years law enforcement experience but began my " Delivery " work on a part-time basis. To make a long story short, when I saw how much money I was making part-time and the job related stress, medical problems, home life problems, and the " Always on the job mentality " of a street cop, I decided to go into it full time. The compensation I recieved as a 16 year deputy sheriff included various benefits like health insurance that I no longer have but the dollar to dollar ratio in real life earning is quite a bit higher. And all without the STRESS and BP medications I was on. I have expenses like fuel, equipment maintainance, and road food but it is all tax deductible. The only thing I really have to pay at the end of the year is social security taxes. Being a delivery driver is one of the job market's greatest secret. Although when you are a sub-contractor you have no benefits to speak of unless you purchase them yourself, if you have your own reliable truck, van or even hatchback sedan, you can earn yourself a great income in any economic situation. One time during the week of a Valentine's season, my wife and I made about $700 delivering flowers for a florest using a chevy camaro with the rear seat removed. People and companies will always need things delivered. Oh...the money difference between what I do now and the income I earned as a 16 year deputy sheriff? My last year as a deputy earned about $50,000 not including extra security type jobs on my days off. That income number also included the department paid portion of my life and health benefits. My 2008 income as a lowly delivery driver, $116,000. And that included no one looking over my shoulder or critiqueing my work or any other complaining. I simply use common sense, drive safe and show up on time. If anyone is experiencing income difficulties, maybe this info might help you. Look up Transport or Delivery work online or any online job board.

My son had his own lawn business for several years and decided to quit it and become a long distance truck driver. He loved it, except for being away from his family, and made quite a lot more money. He switched last year, to driving for a local oil rig company and his income has increased quite a bit. I think truck driviers are one of the backbones of our society! And you are right...everything needs to be delivered somewhere!

We are doing well in this recession. My husband is a business owner of a business that is necessary. His career will never taper off. I work part time at a golf course/indoor ice skating rink. You'd be surprised how people still continue on with both sports regardless of their financial situation. It's amazing. People will spend all kinds of money to have fun and enjoy their favorite sport. I feel we are extremely fortunate.

My job is related to the direct care of people, and does not seem to be losing any ground. The last month I have had more work than I really wanted, I was given an extra client.

The current economy is killing me. I lost my job in November. I have been unable to find a new job. I am also going through a divorce, losing my home, moving back in with my parents as well as finding out my child is narcoleptic. I have ongoing health issues and no insurance. I don't think life can get any worse. I can't afford to take all of my personal possessions with me when I move. So I am also losing many precious items as I am donating or giving them away. This is not helping my battle with depression. I try to stay hopeful but it is not easy.

The downturn in my local economy is affecting me quite a lot. For a start a some of the shops in my local high street have closed. I had a bad shock when Woolworths closed in my home country. I notice that many shops have sales on and so when I pay for something I must get in that moment. Some pregnant friends of mine paid for baby equipment and then that business went down. So they are having bother getting their money back. My top hobby is traveling and sadly I have heard about my airlines going down. When I booked my flight to South Africa I made sure that I got travel insurance that would cover me if the airline went out of business. Jobs are very hard to come by at the moment and some friends of mine have been made redundant. I feel sorry for them remembering that happened to me in 1991. Fuel prices are high and so bus fares have gone up on the orange buses from one pound to one pound and fifty pence for a single journey of three miles. I am pregnant and am planning a home birth but the National Health Service is short of midwives so I feel worried about my baby's birth.
