I have a question about maintaining a strawberry bed. I have a bed that has been established for a few years and produces well. But, I have read that the bed needs to be "reworked" every 2-3 years to keep younger plants and get rid of the old ones. Does anyone have some experience with this?

I saw this thread and I got really excited because I have recently planted strawberries in a hanging basket and they have been looking very very sad lately! I was hoping you would be able to give some insight as to why they look so sad and what I should do to keep them from dying. I am going to do some research, I'll keep you posted if I find anything good. Do you have any ideas why they might not look so good?

I do not have experience with growing strawberries in a hangin basket, but I always thought that was a neat idea. I can let you in on the little that I do know, though. :)
Strawberry roots grow pretty shallow, so they need to be watered often. However, they do not like to have their roots standing in water, so they need to be soil that drains fairly well.
Strawberries also need good fertalizer, but I have usually done that after they are done producing (mine are June bearers) and again in late fall. I have used purchased fertalizer specifically for strawberries and I have used regular farm manure. Both seem to work well for me.
Hope this helps a little.
