Will you buy laptop now with Vista, or wait for Windows 7?

My sister is currently on the lookout for a brand new laptop. In fact, I'm looking one for myself as well but I've been postponing the purchase for a year now due to the Operating System which is Microsoft Windows Vista. Most people know about the issues with Vista and knowing that Microsoft is going to release Windows 7 in the third quarter of this year, some people have actually told me to wait. I can actually wait for it as the laptop is not needed urgently. But the question here is that, the laptop price is pretty low right now and when the new Windows 7 comes out, the price is going to increase due to the hidden cost of Windows 7 (the price of the OS is bundled with the laptop) and also due to the increase in demand for laptops. If you were in my position, will you wait for few more months and face a possibility of paying for a more expensive laptop with a decent operating system, or will you actually get the cheaper laptop now with a lousy operating system?

If you said that you can wait, then you should wait until the laptop that can run Windows 7 can actually be affordable in your case. I mean, while you wait, you get to set aside more money and by the time you can purchase a new laptop that can run windows 7, there would be other models that would be more expensive. Patience is always good and you did said that you don't need it as badly as others do. Why settle for a lousy operating system, as you have said, when you can wait for a better one?

Set aside money to buy a new laptop while upgrading your desktop? Wouldn't that just take you more time than just actually just save everything that you could for the new laptop? That's just being practical. Honestly, I would also linger on purchasing a new laptop or upgrade the hardware of my desktop computer. I am actually thinking of purchasing a good LCD screen so that it would not only display things in a bigger screen but, it would also save money from the electric bill (^_^ ) Anyway, as long as things work out with your decisions. I would also like to have both if I could just have them. A new laptop while my desktop isn't far behind from the specs.. For the operating system, like all rumors, we could only be sure when things settle down once and for all. Rumors, as they are, would only be rumors until some facts are present to either make them true or not at all. And another thing, having Vista would allow you to upgrade to Windows 7? Why grant them the privilege?

The upgrade on the old desktop is not going to cost much - just the RAM and maybe get the cheapest graphic card since my current 6600GT went overheat few years ago. To be honest, I'm not very sure whether the mainboard itself has become problematic. Some people told me to just get a proper desktop to replace my current old desktop. Still thinking. Maybe I should get a laptop, format it to Windows XP, get a docking station and get a 19 inch LCD. Gosh, that's going to cost me a lot more. I really need to plan my budget a little. Anyone has any idea how to check if the mainboard is problematic? LOL. About the Win 7 upgrade, let's wait for the official announcement from Microsoft.

Agreed. I'm actually trying to save up for the new laptop now while trying to upgrade my old desktop. The thing is, I don't know when will Windows 7 be officially released. I've even heard rumors that anyone buying Vista after July 1st will be eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 7. How valid is that rumor, I'm not sure.

Are you using VMWare Player or Server? If server, isn't it slow to run on Vista machine? Which version of Vista are you using?

My system is not slow after vmware server is installed.Ihave 2gb ram and 100gb hdd.I alloted 20gb for xp and alloted around 512mb memory to xp under vm ware.Vmware tools have to be compulsery installed after xp is installed under vmware other wise you will experience less speed. Now a days trend is changing towards vmware at every where. All major companies are changing their platforms towards vmware.Insted of maintaining 3to 4 individual servers they are initiall purchasing hispeed with greater memory and instaling all the servers in one machine only.

it would be better to wait for Windows 7. It can save you money because Windows 7's hardware requirements are much less than of Windows Vista. Windows 7 is much better than Vista in many ways, it comes with better features, better security and many nice interface features.

From what I know, Windows 7 is indeed much more efficient than Vista in many cases. The thing is, Windows 7 will only be released in early 2010. Maybe I should save up on a Mac instead.

Hi, I have my laptop only last December 2008. I bough a new one coz my Dell laptop's battery is not charging anymore. I buy the Acer Aspire one with the Microsoft Vista in it. As of now, I don't have any problem with my OS. My Sister-in-law got his laptop since 2006 an HP Compaq and has Vista in it also. We don't encounter any problem with it. The OS speed is ok and we found it good. I even bring my laptop on my travels and it is great.

Whoa, that's very good for you. May I know what kind of Vista are you using? Is it Home Basic or Home Premium? Most of my friends are suffering from the new OS but they are all technical folks.

I will be completely 100% honest with you, with for Windows7. Windows Vista is by far the worst version of Windows I have ever experienced. It eats your RAM like no other and for an average user who doesn't know how to change Vista's appearance and setting so that it runs faster this system can be very frustrating to use.

That is exactly what many of my friends told me. One of them is an IT support guy and he has been filing complaints to Microsoft on many occasions regarding the poor performance of Vista. He ended up reformatting the Vista machines to the XP operating system. Fortunately the company has enough licenses.

If I had the choice, I would wait until Windows 7 has been out for at least 6 months. Microsoft's track record for new versions of the OS is not exactly sparkling. In fact, my choice (if I were to make it today) would be to avoid Vista. If I had to buy a machine with Vista on it, I would immediately reinstall XP (and then wait for Windows 7 to overcome the inevitable teething problems).

Thanks. Windows Vista is definitely a problematic one. But I do believe Windows 7 will come good, and maybe Microsoft does not need 6 months to settle it. Perhaps 3-4 months to get things done properly. There will surely be some security issues which will then be fixed with the SP. But for home users, I don't think it's too much of an impact.

decisions, decisions lol - I think it depends on what type of work you plan on doing on your PC - if it's just the basics, I'd say buy while the price is down. Personally, I'm working my way back towards the MAC..I hate Vista and the virus warning..gives me a headache just thinking about it - Good Luck

Mac is actually too expensive for me. I'm a programmer so I'm looking at 15 inch LCD display which is only available on Mac Book Pro, which is freaking expensive! Guess I will have to wait a while since Vista is proven to be very slow in most laptops and slow performance is not really suitable for my job.
