we had a cat named tom. and he surely have a great fights with other big cats around the neighborhood. thats why we dont want another cat hovering around his place. we like him even if its only him we got. maybe they have territories that they dont want to share because mostly all animals have this kind of problems dealing with another kind or even with the same specie but still not wanting to have a competition with the other one.

I have two cats and one dog. Bailey our younger cat come to our home when fluffy - our other cat - was about 2 years old and Tazz - our cat was about 9 months. Tazz and bailey got along from the beginnig. Fluffy took a bit longer to warm up to the new guest. But in about one week she was fine with bailey too.
The funny thing is that tazz is a black lab. He is bigger than bailey several times, but bailey has no fear. He likes to sleep in between tazz's paw - he got used to it when he was so tiny that tazz's head would hide him completely.

oh my yes. i have a cat named sage. when i bought my house the cat that belonged to the former owners kept coming back. after his 7th trip from about 6 miles away!
i decided he should stay. the former owners were divorcing so it all worked for them as well.
the little princess sage (an only kitty) is settling into her new spacious home.
enter....buzzard(that was what they named him). sage weighs in at 5 lbs, buzzy on the other hand is 15lbs. guess who is ruling the roost!
poor buzzy, he surrendered! he is on outdoor cat, while sage is an indoor kitty.
it has taken nearly 2 yrs. be patient....let them do their thing and have one litter box more than the number of cats you have. the vet told me that one.
now, they "kiss" once in a while. at times even sleep together.
best of luck!
