Do you take backup of your email box?

Recently my friend was asked to relog in to her gmail account only to find that her account and password do not match! Later she found out that it has been hacked by some well wisher. As she was telling me this she was virtually very sad which took me to my apprehension of the same. Had it been me, I would have lost all my bank accounts details, Card details and my scanned certificates and all personal data! A horrifying experience that would be! I got to know that Google backup does amazing job backing up your email box and computer. Do you know of any other free email backup software? Do you keep backup of your email box?

Hi! Mimpi! I also do not keep any arrangement for back up data of my email inbox, which we should have, I suppose. I read an article about the same few days ago and it was written over there that we should have some back up data of our important email because if we lose the email account all of a sudden, we will be in soup. One of the alternate is that we can forward our important emails to our another email account of different service provider, so that in case one account does not work, we can rely on the other one. Thanks for reminding us, I'll try to do something about back up mail. Also, if you get any useful information through this post, please do let me know.

THis has really set my mind thinking Deepak!.I used to download all important attachments initially, when I was new to the internet becasue I was then worried that some day it may need a backup system but slowly I have stopped doing this. Many attachments are still in the mailbox itself, when I know what they are.I don't bother to open and download it on tothe desktop.I guess I should do it.

That's a good idea deepak. But then that account could be hacked as well. For this reason alone and since i need to keep important documents online, I have created an email account which no one knows and I have started to keep the documents there. I just hope this helps. I was looking for some good softwares though for backup.

what is the meaning of 'good software for backup?' Mimpi-sorry if I sound totally ignorant, but if it is just not too elaborate please tell me. Or should we just download all important documents on to our desktop and copy them on a drive just for backup systems?

I have two email addresses; one is a G mail account and the other is my personal Microsoft address with my provider. When it comes to hackers I don't know which one of the two is safer but I use my Microsoft email for important documents etc... And that one has the bulk of my contacts in it and I do back that one up every week. I don't keep anything of great importance in my emails but certainly my contacts' information is precious. It's such a shame that even on line we're not safe. I am very sorry for your friend I can't imagine how upsetting an incident like that can be!

I did not know that there was any free email backup software. If I had this problem I would loose all my data because I have not kept any backup of my email box and would not know how to do it either.

Hi Mayka I am fearful as well and looking for a software. But I have devised my own method. I have created one email ID which no one knows and started to keep the documents that I would need while traveling or otherwise there. you can try it dear.

I too have an email id which has some important stuff. This email id is neither used for paypal, online sites or chatting with friends. Just the closest family has this.

Oh hope your friend has recovered her data. I dont think I have backup of my inbox. If Gmail or Yahoo has an automatic backup feature then I guess I have but otherwise I only have one copy of everything. I also have multiple gmail accounts. There is the one that I use for online banking and there is the one that I regularly use for myLot and other online sites. The most important information that I probably have in my inbox would be the information on my joined sites. I try to keep those important things at a minimum so in case something happens they wont get any from me.^_^ Of course, it cannot be helped that there be important info posted or kept in one's inbox.

I have never taken any back up of my e-mail account. I just save any attachments if I receive in my e-mail account. As far as security is concerned I just try to be secured by deleting different things every night before turning off my computer. First I delete browsing history of both Mozilla and Chrome, then delete temporary files, then I delete all cookies which are hidden, then finally I delete IE 7 browsing history. I think this is enough if still I feel unsecured then I will change my password in every two months and re-install my windows in every three months.

I had a problem regarding my official mailbox a few months ago. The data crashed and i lost a lot of important information because of that. Lesson learnt. After that all important information is backed up on my pen drive or on a cd depending on the size of it. Outlook does archiving of your mails, andyou could choose to do that for old mails on a different drive. But i'm sure there are other email back up software and i will share the link on that shortly. I guess i need to use it too.

I do actually. I have an archives folder linked to a separate server and I take copies of all emails sent and received on a regular basis. You just never know when a system may crash and data ends up lost, so this is a positive thing to be doing. If I were to lose my work emails for example, I would lose years of relationship building data in parallel and that's irreplaceable.

That would be a terrible loss! Archiving is a just great! Outlook and office email boxes have this kinda facilities. I wish i could archive in gmail or yahoomail.

Hey mimpi! I don't exactly understand? What do you mean she was hacked by a well wisher? I don't have a backup on my email, at least not that I know of. I have 2 email addys. But, I have certain things on this email addy and certain things on my other one. I have no idea what I would do if I was hacked! How does this crap happen? I try really hard to be careful, although I know this stuff happens! I don't really know what I would do!

I receive emails using Outlook express, and I have all my email saved in my computer. So I don't need any backup of my email box, but I think most important I won't have any important bank info or personal data in any emails.

Outlook Express is safer than others. And it has archiving feature which helps in backups. And I agree, we must not keep important docs in email boxes.

Same thing happened to me. Last month, i was logged out of my yahoo because someone signed in. i cannot access my mail the entire day, i was only able to access it the next day. i thought nothing strange happened to my account but when i was opening my paypal account, it can no longer be accessed. apparently, the registration information from paypal in my email was gone and i wasn't able to notice it. i also need my email box to be backed-up but i don't know any.

I can understand head nor tail of this discussion topic mimpi.I never knew that things like this happen. However, regarding my details I keep them all written in a note book and except for other passwords that I use here on the net [not banking] I have written down all these. But I cannot at all understand how a mail can be hacked. Left a comment in your 'white lies' discussion.
