have you ever put up your own server?

hello, i was wondering if you could give me tips on how to put up your own server in the web. It is not web hosting isnt it? since i know that in web hosting, they usually provide you the database and the server.. But in my case, I am going to build a reservation system for a certain company and the server should be inside their LAN and should also connect to the internet.. The website is currently running on localhost but I need to deploy it to the internet. By the way, im using php, mysql and apache. I know this questions seems blurry, to rephrase this, um.. I think what i am asking is what do you need or have to do to put up your own sever.. thanks in advance
