A school student just eleven years old was made to stand in the sun for some studies not done. She slipped into a coma and then later died........Is it right for the teachers to give such a harsh punishment to the students that they sometimes fall sick or commit suicide due to shame?

question mark - shows a question mark to symbolize my curiosity of what triggers people to give harsh punishments.
sometimes i get to think what stresses these people who give harsh punishments to others. is it the volume and kinds of work that they're given in their workplace? is it a cheating spouse? is it inability to support the many kids they brought about in this world? is it the wanting for more material things?i do have the feeling that if they're not mentally ill their problem lies in one of the reasons i mentioned.

Hello mayka123, I think there should be a school policy what are the appropriate disciplinary action to be taken for each cases. You just can't leave it to the teacher to administer his/her own kind of punishment. Disciplinary action should be humane and effective. I think the teacher is right to give punishment. Unfortunately she/he did the wrong kind of punishment. There must be some guidelines that the school should provide to minimize such incident. Regards.

The teacher has a right to punish the kid but the punishment should not be so harsh that it harms the child in anyway. Each student has to be handled differently. I think the school authorities have to give some guidelines to the teachers as to the kind of punishment to be given out to children.

No one slips into a coma merely from standing in the sun. I do agree that the punishment was harsh and completely inappropriate. There are laws and rules for this sort of thing, at least there are where I live.

Maybe the student was already sick and being made to stand under the sun made it worse. I do believe that teachers shouldn't punish students this way or in any way that seem harsh because first of all, they don't have the right. What happened to the teacher?

The teacher has been suspended from her job. The police have still to take action in this matter. Even if the student was sick the parents at this stage may not come up with the truth and will put the full blame on the teacher and the school.

Maybe this will be a lesson to all the teachers who still use harsh punishments.

though i donot agree with what the teacher has done(it amounts to child abuse),i think students are taking advantage of the fact that the teachers can be punished even if they yell at him/her.

I don’t know why, but I have found some teachers very vindictive in nature…it has seemed as if they get some twisted pleasure in punishing students. The more the student squirms in shame or agony the more glorified the teacher feels. As I have said, this is my personal opinion but I think many will agree with me. and of course, each teacher has his/her own pet and there are so many other factors which prevent parents from speaking against an abusive teacher and until and unless the parents speak, there is little the school authorities can do against such errant teachers and such mishaps continue unabated. BTW corporal punishment is banned in India but how many teachers follow that?

In India, Education system is so worst that from childhood student started harassed by all these stupid teachers who thinks by hard punishment Student will start to study. But I think it only create fear in mind of student. All such type of teacher should be arrested and give lifeterms by Law. Actually now a says education just become a business for school and colleges. Their is no respect between teacher and student. Teacher, parents, education system are responsible for these.

Hi! Mayka! I also read this news and felt very bad about the same. A teacher punishing a student of class II in this manner is really a sorry state of affairs and the teacher should be punished severely for this attitude and the Principal of the school should also be brought to book. It is really a shameful incident and the child's fault was that she did not complete her home work, not completing one's home work does not warrant such a stringent punishment.

That is a cruel punishment. The teacher should be held liable for that. I believe that he/she violated the rights of the child. It is never right to punish a student, specially that kind of punishment, that is child abuse.

Action is being taken against the teacher. I think the schools should keep a strict eye on the teachers so that such incidents are not repeated. There are too many cases like this coming up now.

I believe it should not be the school administrations alone should be responsible in avoiding such things to happen but it should mainly be the responsible of the teachers themselves. If they can't contain their anger what's the use of the school reminding them not to punish their students?

Absolutely not.Its the teachers which make person eligible to live in this world but if the teacher does these things what will be the effect of the teachers on other students.

Yes this kind of behaviour by the teachers does have a negative effect on the children and they do not respect their teachers as much as they should.

omg... that's a very bad thing to do to a child. I'm gonna sue the teacher if I were the parent. No one has the right to give such punishment just for not doing the homework assigned to the children. It's not enough that the teacher be suspended, if the teacher was guilty, he/she should be also given punishment.

Om my yes it's wrong. Some people can't handle the sun. Although it's bright and beautiful it's not something many people can enjoy without getting sick. I'm one of these people and others just do not understand. This is a sad situation. I'm sure the teacher feels bad enough but some punishments are not a welcome thing.

I dont think its because of shame. Punishment is a part in developing discipline in students. Making to be stood in the sun is being done all over the world and my high school used to do that. However, I think it should only be limited. I mean like 10-15minutes under the sun just to let the students get a 'taste' of what is more to come if they dont do their studies again. Its only to 'scare' the students to do what is asked of them. However, punishing up to the point of fainting is just too much. They have to revise their disciplinary actions and they should be sorry for pushing too hard. A life was ended because of such reckless abandon. I hope this kind of thing doesnt happen in any school wherever part of the world it may be..

how long was she made to stay out there? teachers are out of control it seems when they enforce punishments.. like they are trying to make up for the ones they havent been able to punish in the past so they go over board

It is very harsh punishment the teachers give and they dont even realise what they are doing. The teachers should be punished.Next time any teachers anywhere in the world should dare to give such punishmentto the student.

I too had read this news and was very saddened. The teachers nowadays are very strict and the kids do not enjoy school as much as before. Hope the school authorities take strict action against such teachers so that these incidents are not repeated.
