I have been thinking for a long time about staring my own business. I have jumped back and forth as to what I would want to do. I have thought of a club, a cleaning service. I would like to be an artist..a writer..It seems like I would like to take about five lives and roll them all in to one..lol..So what about you? If you could start your own business what would it be? If you have already done it..what do you do and do you have any pointers?

there is nothing like being your own boss, jenn. i highly reccomend it. lol. it's alot of hard work getting your own buisness going but don't think that would be a problem to you. if i had it to do again guess i'd go back to fixing hair & selling antiques. don't thnik u could make a living off antiques i couldn't when i had them but had both the beauty shop & antque shop together so it worked well . housecleaner would be good to get into, i think. they seem to make pretty good. the only thing in any buisness is getting it built up. that takes awhile. my friend has a day care in her home , she seems to do pretty well .wish u luck in whatever u decide.

Hi Jo! I bet you done very well for yourself. I hope I can do the same. I'm thinking seriously about the cleaning business. I have a couple of people that I do work for but they are not regular in their needs. I thought about bidding on a contract in the mountains for the vacation cabins but not sure if I could put what I need to unto it while working the job I have now. I'm also afraid to quit my job and jump in with both feet because of the economy, benefits, etc. I think that your own business pretty much has to be a jump in with both feet kinda thing too. Thanks for the response.

Well, I have done it already and now retired from owning a dance school. It was great while it lasted but it is nice to be retired, too. I still work, teaching, but part time. If I were to open another school, I would try to become a non-profit dance school for underprivileged kids who cannot afford to dance.

Well - - here goes my quarter's worth: I'd like to have my own 'Thrift Store.' With the economy the way it is, the 'Dollar' stores and thrift stores are doing a lot more bussiness these days. I'd also have a section for selling clothes on "consignment." I would want to figure out some way to also purchase good quality clothing at a very low rate, for resale, and would make a point of having a rule that no clothes that were donated, would be accepted if they were stained, torn, hems out, buttons missing or zippers broken. I'd also make sure that all items were put in 'size' catagories, and have a special section for the plus sizes. So much of my thoughts - Oh yes, and the name of my store? "Second Edition."

yeh that sounds like a good idea but I really would like to open a venue where I could get a lot of country music fans in so I could pay the bands well as this is something they are not used to, even playing in hotels they only get paid peanuts really, I would like to see them be able to even make a living from their music...there is a lot of good music just not getting out there because they simply can't afford to get it out.....

My husband and I started our business 5 years ago - a greenhouse. It has been very hard work but also very enjoyable. My pointers are as follows: 1. Do something you love, otherwise you won't stick with it when times are tough. 2. Make sure you have enough regular income to get you through lean times. 3. Don't go into (huge) debt to finance your business. Many businesses fold because they can't afford the loan payment during one or two months of lean times. This can start you on a slippery slope to financial ruin. 4. Establish small lines of credit for your business and pay promptly. Keep the biz credit squeaky clean. 5. If you will be dealing with the public, treat them like royalty and stick to the old adage "the customer is always right" even when they're jerks...lol. 6. There WILL be tough times, so don't start a business until you are prepared to ride those out. 7. Learn, read, talk to people. Know your business inside and out, including the bookeeping and accounting, taxes, state requirements, etc. Good luck!!!!!

I like what you say about the customer always being right, even when they are jerks. Oh, that is hard sometimes, but worth it! My husband and I own a landscape maintenance company, and there are many times I would like to tell the customer just what I think. Fortunately I like to eat more than I like to be right! :)

LOL! That is the most important thing. I have dealt with a lot of people and know how to suck it up. People just want what they want and sometimes are very ugly in their means of getting it. Thanks so much for the advice. Sounds like you are very successful with your business.

My advice to anyone who wants to start a business is to make sure they can physically run the business. Don't rely on employees. My mistake with my business was I had to have an employee. I would have made so much money had it not been for having the employee becuase he was unreliable and stole. He also wouldn't let me know where my equipment was when I would ask. Owning your own business is a great accomplishment and gives you a feeling of self worth. If you do start a business I highly recommend something you can do by yourself..

After three nonchalant employees in nine months we ended the business. You could not imagine my disappointment (especially since it would have been profitable) and my relief (after such employees it was a release of relief).

If I have enough capital, I want to put up an internet cafe. This will complement my interest in hanging out on the web. I am a hands-on type of person. So, I would like to be there all the time. At the same time, I have more time to maintain my blog and attend to my online money-making stints.

Now, I am absolutely a sohu. I am waiting for an opportunity to be a teacher. Meanwhile, I have signed a part-time job. This job offers me a good salary. I just need to search clients on the internet and bring them to the company. That's all what I do in the job. In fact, my husband and I are striving for our own business. So firstly I need to accumulate money for our future company. Although there are difficulties and temptation on the way, we support each other and carry out our idea.

I have thinking such things like running my own business many years ago when i was a little girl. My dream is just a small place serving self-making coffe and delicious snakes. It's a place where we can stay easily with friends releasing our heavy press, or you can have a private separated space to enjoy reading. This is a simple dream sounds easy to realize if there is enough money and time. However, i am a graduate stududent now, finding a job to live on is my first concern. Maybe after many years when i have a stabile life it will come to pass.

Well...I guess the the thing you could immediately start with is to be a writer. All you need is your mind & stationery. Now a days the romancenovel market is simply booming. It's a tried & trusted genre. Besides there are hordes of websites out there to give you all the advice you need to write every single chapter!!! Most of these advices cost you nothing plus they also give you links to publishers etc. So it's like everything is served to you on a single platter. Besides writing romance comes easy to most of us. You see...if you can think romantic...you can write it too. Just let your imagination run amok. I'm gonna give it a shot after my exams done with. Anyway hope you find it a good idea. All the best!!!

Thank you phoenix! I wish well on your venture too. Romance is a great catagory but I have always written drama or horror stories..lol..guess I could give romance a shot to though. Got any suggestion on a good website? The ones you say give you links to publishers and their requirements would be great. Thanks for responding.

About 12 years ago I started an at home medical transcription business. I did very well and was glad to be home for the kids when they got out of school, etc. Five years ago I decided to give that up and started a retail (first on ebay and then my own website) selling security blankets for babies. Ebay fees really started getting out of hand and then with the economy, it just wasn't worth it anymore. I closed the store and recently went back to transcription. I love working at home and can't imagine doing the 8-5 routine. Just pick something you are good at/enjoy and doesn't require a huge investment to begin. Good luck!

Hi JeninTN: Me and my brother actully thought about buying a subway and owning it and having me my brother and his girlfriend and my husband working there and maybe 2 other people or so. My brother is a manager at a subway now and he takes pride in his work and is very dedicated. He has been there for about 8 years now. Good discussion JeninTN. My husband had thought about running a club or Drive in because there is not really any around any more except for like 1 or 2 in Pennsylvania.

A franchise is a good choice. You already have a reputation and clients before you open the door. Your brother has also been there long enough to know the ropes and the rules within the franchise. I think there is oppertunity for us all out there if we just take it. Thanks for reponding emilie.
