Caffeine

DO you drink coffee? I did, but I gave up yesterday, and aaaaaarrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhh! My head feels like it's going to explode!! I have taken painkillers, but nothing has worked so far. Any advice as it feels like my head might actually fall off! Have you ever given up caffiene?

Headache will last about three days, be careful and do not take migraine over the counter pain relievers as they contain caffeine. Hang in there. It does get better. If you get in really bad shape have something with only a little bit of caffiene once a day for one week and then stop that. It worked for me. Drink more water.

I drink and love drinking cofee, too. If you stop drinking cofee it might be similar to a "jojo-effect". Maybe you should drink some lemonade or water or continue drinking coffee.

my suggestion is to quit slowly not cold turkey. caffine can be a hard one to kick. the only pain killer that will probably work is the tylenol ultra because it has caffine in it.

I think that's a good idea that way you don't get yourself hooked back on coffee. and I agree no eyeballs would not be good lol

I'm gonna try a caffeine based painkiller. I think I'll have to or my eyeballs will fall out.

Hi, 3cardmonte! Yes, I drink cofee every blue moon. But when I do drink coffee, I make sure that it does not have any caffeine in it. Maybe you should lie down for a while and relax. I hope that your head will stop bothering you.

Do you choose Blue Mountain coffee when you drink it on a blue moon?

I've never given it up, but have had friends and relatives who have had to for health reasons. Most did better if they tapered it off slowly, they didn't get so many headaches. Why don't you try it that way?
19 Apr 09
Im not very good at cutting down, its kind of all or nothing with me!

I give you lots of credit. I wouldn't be able to do that. Caffeine is a major food group, right next to chocolate for me. I can't function without my pot of coffee in the morning...

You should do a gradual caffeine withdrawal to avoid the headaches. I've never tried to quit cold turkey like that but do try to drink non-caffeine soft drinks now. I love my coffee too much to give that up. I'd rather make sacrifices in other ares like the soft drinks! Good luck and maybe go ahead and give yourself a treat...a cup of weak coffee and see if that helps. Reduce the number of cups you have each day and make it weaker each day until you can get off of it without headaches. My mom had this problem and it took awhile to live a day without headaches.

Damn, too late though I've got the headache now! I dont have any coffee in the house!

I couldn't imagine giving up coffee all together! It gives me that jump start in the morning, lol. I get headaches if I don't drink ENOUGH of it, let alone noe at all. Good luck in your attempt!

Hi 3cardmonte, I drink coffee occasionally. When I was in school, I used to drink it for the caffeine. Nothing worked for me (slept 5 min after finishing the coffee) except a double shot expresso. But, that's kinda not nice and pocket-burning. Now, I just drink it for the taste normally and not for the caffeine. Anyway for your case, you might want to try weening i.e. drink less each day till you stop totally. If you stop abruptly (and especially if you used to have a high dosage each day), the effect would be painful as you said you have experienced. So, my suggestion would be for you to take it gradually.

I drink quite a lot of coffee, and I have never actually given it up although I know that I should really! When I have gone out for the day before now I have not had coffee and the headache I end up with is absolutely awful, so now when I am going to be out all day I make sure I get a coffee break! I have recently cut down on the amount of coffee I drink and I replace certain cups with water instead, I found that I was unable to sleep properly and I was having nightmares! Its crazy to think that it does that to a person!!!

I know right! no one thinks that caffeine is that powerful!

I would love to help but I have not mastered my own addiction. Mine is more to soda than coffee although I drink coffee sometimes, too. My headache medicine is caffeine based and works better than anything I have ever tried (the rest hurt my stomach). It requires a doctor's rx and it's called Fioricet. It has a brother (or cousin) Fiorinal but that one does not work as well for me.

I have some caffeine based pills, Im gonna try them.

Why do you have to leave caffeine in so short a time? Shouldn´t you go little by little if it´s bad for your health? I couln´t stop drinking coffee altogether but I could slow down with it if needed. Relax, take it easy. Take care
19 Apr 09
Well its bad for me so I figure I should give it up cold Turkey!

I drink a lot of coffee every day. I refuse to drink decaf because to me it defeats the purpose. I have gone without for a total of 2 weeks at a time a few different times, but I always go back to it. I know that Excedrine Migraine medicine is a combination of tylenol and caffeine and is great for migraine headaches. Because it has a small amount of caffeine in it, it may help your heaaches.
