About a year ago a certain lady decided to take on the challenge of living on a dollar day for a year. She was a wealthy lady but she wanted to see if money really does make the world go round. Sadly after just a month, it proved that she really does need money to survive in this world. However I look at people in the third world countries who live on less than a dollar a day and yet they manage to survive and get by and are all usually happy with what they've got. How much of a value do you place money in your life? Does money rule your world? Are you always on the lookout of increasing your bank balance? Would you survive on a dollar a day?? If so how would you plan your daily budget? Very interested in hearing your views/opinions..

For one, I would not be able to survive $1 a day. It was very courageous that this lady tried it. With on going worldwide recession harder times are "ON."
Yes the 3rd world can manage because they have other standards of living. I also agree that they live happier having very little money, food & materials around them.
I myself do not value money in my life. I am both happy and sad because I donated the money that was suppose to keep me alive in the coming years. But who cares? If you know the Lord's Prayer, God promised all these to us and I live in Faith, Love & Hope! This is motto of my life.
It may sound crazy but I am still alive enjoying the graces of God. DO NOT BE AFRAID, I WILL ALWAYS BE WITH YOU. ASK AND YOU SHALL RECEIVE, KNOCK AND THE DOOR SHALL BE OPENED, SEEK AND YOU SHALL FIND.
The daily budget is planned with simplicity in life, less material buying and healthy foods that you produce yourself with your own hands. We are actually going back to the past, minimalism.
NEVER LET MONEY RULE YOUR WORLD!

OMG, I don't really think there would be a way to live on $1 a day. You're saying a person could live on 30$ a month. Even if you grow your own vegetables. Even if you have no rent, no utilities. Money does not rule my world. I try to be quite thrifty but that definitely is not manageable.

I have been dirt poor. I mean lost everything and lived in a tent for a few months with 3 kids...very little income. It is very hard but you do get creative when you have what you "think" is nothing. I was grateful that I had a tent. I learned to cook almost anything on a grill and in the rain even. You really learn to appreciate the little things in life that most and even I always took for granted. Those are days that I would not ever want to return to but now that they are passed...I'm grateful for them. I learned so much. My kids did too. It is funny looking back. I remember feeling like the worst mom in the world because I didn't have an apartment...didn't have tv etc etc. The guilt drove me. We got an apt. but it was a very long time before we got tv. We had running water but it wasn't always hot. We had to heat water on the stove and do baths. You just get creative. Many days i could not buy even a popsicle. Money itself does not rule my world...survival does. I have always worked and only did a short...very short...stint on welfare. It's not about being rich...it's about getting by. times are getting tough again. I have one daughter still at home. we cut back. we check each other on what are "needs" & what are "wants". we live frugal. If need be...cable could go ....we have areas we can cut back on. even this internet could go. I'd be smarter this time around tho. Instead of giving all my stuff away, I'd sell it on ebay and buy a tent that didn't leak.

I can relate to you as I also came from a similar background to yours. I have experienced living with no money, no schooling having to rely on living with relatives who absolutely hated us and most times we spent just going into the mountains and eating whatever nature had for us there. Maybe 20 years ago living on a dollar would be managebale but from everybody's response it doesnt seem likely.
Thank you all for your input and comments.. happy my lotting

money is important to me, I lived in Singapore, the standard of living is rather high. I am always looking out for opportunity to look out for ways to earn money, but mostly online. And I don't gamble, Because I don't believe in leaving anything to luck.
But I certainly thought of a way to survive on a dollar a day. Make it a detox/fasting day. I would fast for 24 hours, so saving the dollar. And to increase the rate of detoxification, I would go to the park to jog and exercise. The dollar would then be used to purchase a bottle of mineral water. See, I stayed healthy and save money. I tried it before, it does work. But don't do it too often.:)

Wow, I wonder who's that lady. Anyway, I think that it's possible, provided that you have your own fruits and vegetable garden, and a year supply of goodies. I don't really put too much value on it, I don't think bout it and just work my way off. It certainly don't rule my world, and I don't want to be it's subject when I should be it's ruler. In my own opinion "Seek God first and everything else will follow" has been one of GOd's promises that I use as a stronghold and till now even if we have some financial ups and downs He never forsake us. I believe that we should not limit ourselves with what we can do financially. Ciao!

Money is very insignificant for me. I know that a certain amount of money is necessary to survive in this world (not that I agree with that idea) but I don't have much desire for anything materialistic.
Although, it might seem rather hypocritical for me to say this seeing as I am a member of myLot. But I would be a member here money or not, it's a fun place to discuss a lot of great things and the money I make on here will not be all that hardy to begin with anyway.
Money is important, yes.
However, money is supposed to work for man, not man for money.

Hi, jellymonty! I have been many days without any money. Not even a dime to my name. So, yes, I think that I can survive to be on a dollar a day. But after a awhile, I will soon need more money. Money doesn't rule me. I rule money. I would like to make more money so that I can save up and hav enough to buy what I need. If I am broke, I will seek a productive way of bringing in the extra income. I don't want to be without money for so long. It is impossible for me to. I have kids and I have bills that needs to be paid off.

I really dont think its possible for anyone to live on only a dollar a day because you cant pay your bills with only a dollar a day and rent cost more then a dollar day and of course food cost more then a buck a day unless you plan to eat chips for week and starve for the rest of the week, and just let your lights go out and risk getting an eviction notice.

In the UK there was a lady who lived on just £1.00 a day for a whole year, with the exception of bills such as electricity, water, gas were not included. She did manage to complete a whole year and ended up writing a book all about it. Whilst some of the things she did like using the library to get out books and movies free makes sense some of the extremes that she had to go through did seem a bit to over the top for my liking.
Personally I would struggle to live on just £1.00 a day for more than a few weeks. But if I did try I would definitely be taking advantage of end of day reductions in supermarkets and vouchers to make sure I was paying the minimum for necessities.

I can probably live for a dollar or maybe two but that's really depend on "where". If it's like now living at home with internet it's impossible. The bills will be way too high but living cheap is really easy. Although everything fun in life today cost cash and if you want to go out with friends, it's really stupid to go without cash in your pocket.

I really envy you can spend as long as one dollar a day people, if any. I now use every day is probably around $15, but I have been looking for more ways to make money. Basically, I will probably plan a day trip, so that can know how much that day about the budget. Are basically used in the fare and meals.

I suppose the word "survive" does not include a lot of things that are not absolutly necesary BUT...we have them.
Like phone bills, electricity bills (big ones, with all the electric gadgets we use), big water bill because we like nice gardens with exotic plants.
Like more cliothes and shoes than we could ever wear out. Like creams, perfumes, shampoos and conditioners... Like hose instead of knitted socks when it´s cold.
I probably could survive on $1 a day, but could not LIVE on that sum. Money does not rule my world, but it´s because I don´t know what hunger is. I live frugally, but what is frugal for me is riches for other people.

i don't think so... the living cost here is very expensive and there is no way that i can live on $1 a day no matter how frugal i am... it is just simply impossible... i think the minimum money i need to survive here is $1000 a month per person... that is already very minimum and very frugal... take care and have a nice day...

Its not easy to live on a dollar a day. Maybe 2 dollars a day can be managable but only for 1-2 days. I've tried that already and i could say it was really hard and sad to live in that way.

It would be nearly impossible in the world that we live in to live off of a buck a day...it's not so much the value that we as a collective have put on money, but more or less it goes back to needs. If you went to a grocery store...what could you get for a dollar? You wouldn't be able to drive around, that would end up costing you way more than your budget in the long run...which means your days would be full of lots of walking (or biking...but that's if you have a bike...can't get a bike for a dollar...)....
Also, you must look at it like this, it would be different in a third world country as well...what happens to only be one dollar to us could equate to much more there...I am sure that if you had no choice you'd become accustomed to it...but to go from living the way that most of us do now to living off of a dollar a day is a pretty big shot in the dark...

Well... This depends. Does all this count the following?
House Payment
Car Payment
Car Insurance
Kids?
Utility bills?
If you cut ALL of those out.. Well. Lets see. A dollar a day. Food wise.. It would depend on where you live, and what seasons are at your disposal. You could grow things, or even go out and pick/harvest somewhere local. Buying anything with a dollar nowadays is hard. Even the Mc Donalds dollar menu is actually $1.06.
So.. While having that. There are many free things that you can do around everywhere. Walking, parks, lakes, beaches, forests, Etc. Lots of things one could possibly do. Spending your dollar, well, depends. You could probably save it.
But in this day and age, unless you have absolutely NOTHING, it's impossible.

hmmmmm, honestly i would not survive on a dollar a day budget(and i live in a third world country). but looking at the less fortunate people you're talking about, i believe that they survive with this kind of daily budget (and be considerably happy) by lowering expectations and aspirations in life... most of them do not aim high, as long as they will find a decent job to let their family survive day by day, they're happy with that. they don't aim to buy a ps3 or the latest wii but instead they enjoy simpler games with a slipper and a tin can.
one of their source of joy would be family, this is when family sticks together during the "thick and thin" situations.
