How far is too far for long distance relationships?

At one time or another, many people have had some sort of long distance relationship- be it a city, state, or even country away. My current relationship is about an hour away. Him in Santa Ana (Orange County) and me in Wilmington (LA County. Pretty much Long Beach area). For us it is hard enough as it is, yet I have friends whose boyfriend lives in Northern CA, while they live here in Southern, or even friends who have relationships in different countries! My question is, how far is too far for a long distance relationship to really work? What have been your experiences?

If you don't like each other, the next room is not far enough.
On the other hand, if it's a really serious, committed relationship, any distance is not too far (on the understanding that the separation is temporary anyway).

The longest I have ever lived from a significant other is 30kms. I think the longest I would even consider is maybe 100kms. I don't find a reason in dating someone that I can't spend time with. I have friends that I can talk to if need be. The reason I chose to date that person is because I want to spend time with them on a regular basis, not once or twice a week.

That makes sense. We always want to spend as much time as possible with someone we are intersted in. :]

I guess it all depends on both partners and the love they have for each other, sometimes love knows no bounds and the distance isn't an issue, some people can cope with long distance relationships. Personally I couldn't it's not the same you want to be with your partner and if there is too much distance and you are unable to see each other for long periods then the relationship is highly strained and volatile. That is just my opinion for one person it might be a few miles away to others it could be a different country, preferences of the individual comes into play as does the strength of love for each other.

The longest distance for me has been just under 1,500 miles. I'm in Illinois and he was in Mesa. I was good and comfy with things but he's with a chick that lives an hour away now.

I have had relationships as far away as 2000 miles (she was in Brazil, me in Florida). These can work if both partners are dedicated, trusting and patient. It can be difficult at times, but constant communication helps a lot.
