Unwelcome guest on the back porch

It had been a quiet day as I was in my room reading and listening to music most of the day. Then in the early evening my granddaughter came running into my room with terror in her eyes. There's a rattlesnake on the porch!, she told me. My son in law had gone out on the porch to smoke when he saw something odd on the porch. He squatted down to see and discovered it was a rattlesnake! As he said, he did not realize how fast he could jump up and sideways to the door! He is afraid of snakes but with the garden hoe was able to kill it. That whole thing put a stop to the peace and quiet. Now I wonder how many are still out there...

Hi jillmalitz, it's really dreadful to find a rattlesnake at the porch unexpectedly. I think it was the first time your granddaughter came across such terrible creature that frightened her in the early morning.
I think the snake would hurt a person only if it is attacked. It would do so just for protecting itself.
Here in my place we usually will call the fire station if we find a snake in our house compound. Yeah, the fire fighters will come soon. Well the problem will be solved. The snake will be sent to zoo then.
Happy posting and take care.

Yeah , for the safe of our loved ones, we should solve the problem instantly depending on the very situation then. I understand that we have to solve many problems if living in the country where we could hardly get any assistance from others.
Take care and happy posting

We are sort of in the country here, so it was easier to just kill it rather than call someone to come get it.

That sounds like an opening to a horror film! I hate snakes, but fortunately I live in a country where we have very few with the adder being the only poisonous one, the only rattlesnakes we have are at the zoo behind glass! I don't think I'd be able to sleep thinking there were snakes around and one could pop up at any time or scarier still come into my home. I hope you don't find any more!!

Yes it does sound like a movie. My daughter and I were talking about that movie Snakes on a Plane after we got rid of it. When I went to bed last night I instinctively threw back the bed covers just to make sure there were no unwanted guests. Now I am wondering how many more are out there?

Wow, this is scary. Rattlesnake huh? Very dangerous snake. You oughta be careful in and outside your house. Try calling animal or pest control. They might be able to help you out. Do it fast before another snake shows up.

I suggested that we call the Parks and Wildlife wardens but I guess my son in law didn't want to. The subdivision here is new and our street backs up to a pasture, so now I guess I will have to be more careful around the garden or if I take my dogs out in the back yard. I have also heard coyotes sometimes at night. Almost makes me want to go back to Houston.
