when i was a kid, sometimes when i was chewing gum, and say it was dinner time or time to go to bed i would take my gum out and stick it in the fridge to continue chewing the next day.
i know some of you are thinking "that's gross" but we didn't have germs back in the 60s and 70s..........or at least it wasn't as big of concern back then..........and dam! look at that...........we all survived.
anyway, my brother and sister would also do the same thing and we all had our own personal gum parking space usually somewhere on the egg shelf or in the butter door...........god forbid you would ever chew someone else' ABC gum!
i don't think my kids ever got into this strange ritual..........maybe gum was more of a rarity when i was a kid..............maybe we were just weird.
did you ever take your gum out and save it for a later chewing???

Actually I have.. When I had to eat I would put my gum on the plate or in whatever I was drinking so when I was done I just had to get my gum out of the cup. Some kids weren't allowed to get alot of gum or afford to buy alot of gum so we made it last as long as possible till it became unchewable. Tough, I never thought to put mine in the fridge over night though but I usually just chewed it all day and tossed it at bedtime in the trash..But then by days end it was chewed well and all the flavor gone and it started to be hard to chew.

I have 6 older siblings biological not including the step children all older then me..so I guess I was taught alot of bad habits because of them also. See if I had been smart though I would have put it in the fridge for the next day..

well, in my defense, i was the youngest, so i'm sure my sisiter taught my brother this trick, and he taught me.......so it wasn't my fault.
dang hand-me-down rituals.

LMAO!!!! there were no germs in the 60's and 70's?!!!!!!!
my daughter still parks her gum in strange places! lol! she is a gumaholic! I was putting dishes in the dishwasher and found a glass with gum on the side.. I've found it on the headboard of her bed.. the lamp shade....the back of her head (fell asleep with gum in her mouth) and the latest place was on the dog's head... what?! our dog doesn't have germs!!!
I don't chew gum at all.. I have TMJ and it's not worth the pain the next day.. and I have a quirk when it comes to gum... I can't stand to see anyone blow a bubble... it makes me want to vomit.... I dunno why.... but it makes my stomach flip!

No, my chewy doesn't lose flavour because I don't stick it on the bedpost. I stick it, in fact, under my armpit. That way, it's kept nice and moist and the flavour stays in it. Also, it's handy there because you can stick other things in it, if you don't want to lose them - for example, your car key, your credit card, your euthanasia pill ... and it's hard for thieves to pickpocket it!

No, of course not, ewwww. why would I chew it and stick it in the fridge for the next day chewy. what if a cockroach or a vermin suddenly humps in and taste the damn chewing. for me, once your done with the chewing gum, it's best to simply throw it away. you simply don't know the germs that had enslaved the gum..

hi sconibear!
i cannot help but laugh at your story! hahahahaha i cannot really remember eating gum when i was younger. or at least when i was a child. i don't even remember eating candy. i am not sure if it was banned at home, or i was banned from eating sweets. but what i remember is, i have never stuck my gum on anything! lol if i did chew gum, i would not. i was fussy about such stuff. lol
anyway, i agree with what you said that there seems to be more safety before than now. we didn't have purified water and we didn't have much immunization. we are healthier as children played outdoors rather than sit in front of the tv or computer. we didn't have psp. we ran around outdoors and climbed trees.
i really would like to expose my child to such an environment. an environment of discovery, of outdoor fun. etc
take care friend! God bless you!
happy mylotting! :D

I find myself smiling while reading your post.
It's amusing to realize that the age of innocence
can be as vivid as a transparent water. When your young
everything is bright and beautiful. We can almost get away
from everything. I do remember where is the parking space of
my bubble gum when I was a kid. At the back of our dining table.
Mother would shout in horror every time she clean the table.
She could see the many tiny islands residing in there. But once
I put it there I don't chew it back. It doesn't taste good anymore.
It's good to be young once in a while.

LOL... ABC gum... icky! I don't remember parking my guy when I was little except for in my hair or under desks, but I never chewed it after. There is something about gum that once I take it out my mouth I am done with it. I chew it for maybe 2 hours and that's it. My kids are gum freaks too but they will spit it out after about a half hour and get a new piece. I have never seen them save it. Maybe because we have lots they figure they can just waste it. I don't like parking my gum because it gets cold and stiff and that makes me think it's gross for some reason.

This is a great philosophical question! Does chewing gum lose it flavour on the bedpost overnight? Does the material the bed post is made of make a difference in that wood perhaps absorbs more flavour than ,say, metal would. But then again wood would have probably more germs in it ready to transfer to the chewing gum.
Myself I always wondered why the gum was so hard the next day. Nice and soft when you stick it to wherever, and next day hard as anything. The flavour though seemed to return as th4 saliva softened the gum. Well, if you stick an already chewed out gum on a bedpost, no miracle can make the flavour return! ( or maybe the chewing gum fairy)
All the fuss about germs..what is this world coming to anyway, we all survived . In fact all the people who stuck their gums on bedside tables etc probably increased their bodies resistance to germs.so we should lobby for a law that requires every child to take up this disgusting habit. Imagine how we would help the health service!

LMAO...
this brings back memories... we dont have a fridge then. but it do save my gum for later chewing... hahaha
i would look for a small plastic and put it there, hide the plastic somewhere, and the next day... tadaaaa... i have a bubblegum, chew chew chew like a goat... lol
sometimes i dip it in sugar, so it will still be sweet, hehehe. i dont know if my sisters ever did this, saving gum for later use, i havent seen them.
there are other times, before going to bed when i am lazy i just stick the gum at the back of my tooth, then fall asleep, when i wake i just chew it... lol... sounds gross now... lol. but i enjoyed every bit of it... lol

I remember saving my gum as a kid
Since I only had a limited amount of pocket money, when I would use it to buy gum, I always tried to get as much of the taste and chewability (if that's a word, I do not know) as I possibly could, so I would always wrap a piece fo gum back in its packet every time I had to stop chewing it, like to eat dinner for example

I don't ever really remember saving it for another time on purpose. I do recall putting a piece in my mouth to find that Had to take it out before it lost it's flavor for one reason or another, then yes I saved it.

My mom was a nurse, so no, I never did it. I honestly don't know a lot of gum chewers these days.

That is really disgusting.
But I would be lying if I said I didn't think "hmmm, ya know what, that could actually work, I should try it."
Actually, at one point I wante to reak the world record of chewing gum the longest (I had just recently watched Willy Wonka and the chocolat factory) so I would take my gum out and put it under the plate when I at. One time I actually tried putting it behind my ear. Ya....didn't try that again!
