Hi minnie! They say this flu is very strong and deadly! I
have a weak immune system as it is! But, it is on it's way
here anyway. It has hit NYC and is starting to spread already.
And the trip is not as fun as you think! My Mom and I haven't
seen each other in 10 years~there's a reason for that~I have
to go straighten things out. So this trip is very necessary.

hihi...this whole thing about swine flu has indeed been affected many people's mindset of travelling recenetly...
i feel that if the trip is really necessary, then just go for it...
i think you just need to be more careful and cautious such that wash your hands thoroughly and regularly.... and wear mask if necessary...
most importantly, visit the doctor if you are not feeling well...
and try not to come in contact with raw pork... and make sure that the pork is fully cooked before consuming...
i guess with those precautions, it should be quite safe..
i am also going on a tour soon..initially i was quite afraid too...but i feel that as long as we are more careful, it should be afraid!

They have been saying here that eating pork has nothing to do with the swine flu. I have also heard that you need to get the good masks that the surgeon's use, not just those that you can buy at the store. I have no idea about that, it is just what I have been hearing. You have a good trip also and be cautious and careful. Hopefully this will be over with soon.

The business about pork is misleading. It's been called 'swine flu' because it has some characteristics of variants of the flu virus which, in the past, have been prevalent in pigs (and birds). I guess it's not 'bird flu' so the media had to sall it 'swine flu'. You are very unlikely - let's face it - going to be handling raw pork on a flight to Miami, anyway!
Flu is mostly passed between people via body fluids. It has quite a short life at room temperature (but enough that you should always wash your hands before eating). If you are concerned, it is enough to wear a mask when in a confined public space (though this is actually more effective at preventing you spreading the virus than the other way round). It is worth pointing out that antibiotics and antibacterial wipes have no effect whatsoever on viruses.
I don't think you should be any more concerned on a flight to Miami than you normally would be. Your innate dislike of flying is enough to cope with. Don't burden yourself any more than you need.
If you want to look at an interesting (and very effective) way of ridding yourself of irrational fears and phobias, you might like to check out this site: http://f64dd99f.linkbucks.com

Hi Opal!Yes the swine flue epidemic has already hit NYC, I think you should postpone your trip if that is not really that urgent. The virus is so deadly and so scary to go to affected places. I hope this will be controlled soon. Meanwhile, I believe you have to really sacrifice missing your Mom for the time being. I know she will understand.
Have a nice day!

Hi salonga! That's just the thing! I guess the more I hear
the more it is starting to not matter! It is right here in
my home state already and spreading quickly! I am 45 minutes
from NYC! At this point there is no place safe! This is a trip
that I have to make so I am starting to think that it isn't
really going to matter where I am, here or there!

Hmmmm....I really don't know. I would be a little concerned but really it could "get" you when your at your local town. I think the swine thing is going to be like SCARS. I would just do the lots of hand washing thing and be careful about coughing people.

Hey Opal. I would keep up on the news and see how it is going when you are ready to leave. Make sure you are doing your part in keeping clean and germ-free and keep your eyes and ears open. You can always decide one way or the other as the news unfolds. Don't push yourself to do something you are not ready for. You can always go see Mom at a later time too. Being a mom I am sure she will understand and back your decision.

That's hard to say since it's spreading all over. We have a few cases in Missouri but think all have been treated and are under control. I know what you are saying about flying because I really don't like it either. Will wait to fly to New Mexico to see one of our kids because of this flu. That's just my thoughts and know others will continue to fly as normal.

Yes, Opal, I was up last night when you responded and I'm up again tonight, lol. I've always been a night owl, anyway. I oversleep during the day and I always have a lot to do at night and that keeps me up. I practice music at night, for one thing. Of course, I get on the computer, too. I need to rearrange my schedule. But then, I have trouble sleeping at night, too. I have trouble with allergies, arthritis, or whatever. I tend to worry a lot, too,and I have trouble relaxing my mind. I know it doesn't do any good to worry but sometimes we can't help it. At least it shows that we care.
I didn't mean to get off the subject but I do hope you have a good trip and a safe one as well. What did the doctor say, btw? Just pray that everything will go okay and that you and your mother will have a good time together. I will continue to pray for you. Kathy.

If you hate to fly, why not drive or take the train? Make an extended vacation out of the trip to see the sights that you miss when your in the air. I never did nor will ever fly. If I'm gonna die in an accident, I'd rather be on the ground that miles up in the air where I might be free-falling while still alive and scared outta my mind. All trips are done by a vehicle with 2 or more wheels. As for the swine flu, blah is what I say.

Hi blackbriar, I have flown there before even though I hate
doing it! That is my fear too! I don't like the idea of
free-falling all that way down either! But, driving is out
since I don't drive and am going alone and the train is a
long trip!

A friend of mine flew to Florida a couple of days before the Swine flu was even mentioned. We are in Texas, she flew to Dallas then on to Fl. She will be flying back next week. I am sure people are taking precautions and I am thinking it would be as safe to fly as it would be to go to the store maybe?

This is one of the best times of year to visit Florida! The weather is perfect, the foliage is crisp, the air is wonderful, the sea is a dream!
Recently my Canadian friend and I were having an argument about which of us was the first one to leave Hollywood. But whether he left first or whether it was me, makes no matter because for sure he was 'forsworn to avalon' and had demonstrated himself to be 'void of truth', hehehehe.
And sure, I was on the run and my heart was broke, but I wasn't running away from something so much as I was running to... I went to Florida for lusty love and mango trees! I pretty much found it too! Well, I never did see a friggin' mango tree, but there was plenty of the other, and that's a fact!
But I knew it was time to depart for otherwhere the day my 4 year old son, while walking along in the scorching sun and sweltering heat, his sweaty little hand in mine, says to me "Mom, when are we gonna get the hell outta here?"

I lived in Coconut Creek and Deerfield Beach, while I was there. I think I spent a little time in Pompano Beach too, but I always HATED it whenever I had to drive into Ft Lauderdale! Too many people and too much traffic for my taste.
Yeah, that is one of the reasons I haven't visited DC in awhile, I would have to leave my mother in charge of my cats!!!

Hi zigzag! I really love Ft. Lauderdale! I don't get to go
to the beach unless I can hook up with my girlfriend for a
day! I do get to go to Mom's pool while she's off playing
cards or whatever they do in the afternoon! It's very relaxing
for me! Except the part being with Mom! We go shopping and
out to eat and she treats so that's always good! Have to leave
my man at home with the cats, now that part isn't good!

It was just announced on the news that a high school in SC will be closed tomorrow because a group of kids that just returned from Disney World has flu-like symptoms. No way of knowing if this is just paranoia. They will be disinfecting the school. Hope you won't be near Orlando!!! I believe I'd definitely wear a face mask when flying. I'd also buy some disposable latex gloves. Don't touch your face or eyes. Cough into your elbow. Hope you enjoy your visit!!!

Hi LadyM! Nice to see you! I hadn't heard that news yet! Not
good! I am going to Ft. Lauderdale so not near Orlando! But,
I can just see me boarding the plane with my mask on and
latex gloves! And getting off the plane! Should be a site
for the news cameras! lol

Opal...I'd rather have them taking a crappy picture than taking me off on a stretcher!!! Oh yes, don't forget to wash your hands!!!
leenie....they are NOT confirmed cases. I think it's the school choosing to be safe rather than sorry. Seventy kids in the band went to Disney World & when they returned, they all had flue-like symptoms. Plus a friend of one of the band members is now sick. So, as a precaution, they are disinfecting the school. This is the second school in SC to be closed. Several kids had vacationed in Cancun & were sick when they returned.
I can't believe it's taking the CDC so long to get the test results back.

Hey Opal!
Like I told you in my email to you, I love to fly, myself. I haven't been on a flight since 1976, though, when I flew to Miami. I guess it just depends on the person.
As far as for the swine flu, you might need to be concerned in that case. When is it you are planning to go? I hope it all goes well for you and be assured, I will be thinking about you. Let us all know how it goes. Kathy.

Hello Opal,I think you will be just fine I am 3 hours from NYC so far I haven't heard of too much in my area,I think you should take precautions and try not to worry too much about it.I have been taking vitimin c to build me up whether it will work against this I don't know it can't hurt I do know my colds go away quicker. That's why they say to drink liquids with vitimin c while your sick it helps fight it.The thing is we can't get too worried over this as we can't let this disrupt our daily living and be fearful of what can happen ,that's what I am trying to do as I can get too paranoid at times over stuff like this but won't stop myself from doing what I need too. I think we should be mindful and careful and hope they get this under control very soon.Have a fun time in Florida and have a safe and happy journey.xx

seem like it is getting worster, everytime I turn on the News, you hear this, I know what you mean, I would be kind of scared to fly right now, well, you can always wear a mask like some people are doing if you are that worried. Do what you think is best. And have a Healthy and Safe trip.

Hi marcia~ I am going to see what my doctor says when I see
him today. I'm pretty sure he is going to say just to go
and not worry about it. It is already in NYC and possibly
right here in Westchester County where I live so there isn't
any escaping it anyway!

Hello my friend, personally I would go because if everyone just stopped home and didn't go anywhere the world would come to a stand still, everyone would be frightened of going anywhere on a plane and that could have serious repurcussions! We have survived worst and look at the scare over bird flu! None of us know how many tomorrows we have so enjoy today and live life for today instead of worrying what could happen! You could actually get knocked over crossing the road or be hit by a freak lightening strike. Weigh up the pros and cons how important is it to see your Mom? And would it make any difference if you used another mode of transport to get there (if possible) forgive my American geography. If we are going to get hit by the swine flu then I don't thing we can stop it, damned if we do, damned if we don't sort of thing. Hopefully it will be just like the bird flu problem we had. No use worrying Que cera cera as they say! That is Wolfie's opinion.

It has already hit NYC and is spreading quickly! I live about

I've run out of excuses and I will just have to go! Thanks

I find the idea of the recirculated air on an airplane somewhat bothersome. I understand that a good way to stay healthy is to make sure you are well hydrated before you begin your flight.

Call me crazy, but at this point, I would say NO, i would not be concerned. If you feel you must, get a mask to wear, use the water-less based cleaners to clean your hands.
Florida has no cases of swine flu and it appears you are in NYC since you commented on it. I would say, there is more of a likelihood of you bringing something down there than you catching something.
Go for it!

You must be in my neighborhood. I am right up the taconic a bit. My concern would be the airport.
Another thing beside washing your hands...keep them away from your mouth, nose and eyes (easier said than done).
Fly out of White Plains or hartford if you can---stay away from Laguardia, JFW and Newark. I say the smaller the airport the better.

you know me, I'm afraid of flying period.
Swine flue or not.
I think you should be ok if you just be aware of the people around you.
Take a mask with you and wear it if you feel like someone is sick.
You be all right, i be thinking about you up there in the sky.

Hi missy! Thanks so much! I will post a discussion about when
I am going! I will be so scared to get on that stupid plane!
I am going to the doctor tomorrow to try to get him to give
me some tranquilizers so I can get on the plane! I am so
terrified! And I will see if I can get a mask too! If not
I will get one next week from the Dentist!
