Have you ever done that before and ended up a disaster like a fire goes off, gas all spread out and so on?
Fortunately, I'm always careful of this because I'm scared of house accident, I have done once before though, I boiled the water in the tea pot and went upstair took a shower, it beeped after a while and I didn't konw, fortunately, hubby was home and he saved it, otherwise, it would have been a big disaster...
Do you have any stories to share with us? :-)

I did this once quite a few years ago but luckily there was no major problem as a result of my forgetfulness. I was once heating up some baked beans in a pan and the phone rang. It was an old friend and we ended up talking for ages! Ofcourse I completely forgot about the baked beans and when I got off the phone I realised there was a burning smell coming from the kitchen . I remembered about the beans and went to turn off the gas immediately. The beans inside the pan had burnt at the bottom but the ones closer to the top of the pan were still edible. Most importantly though, there had not been a fire due to my carelessness. I learnt my lesson that day to be extra careful with things like that.

I remember one time, I turn on the gas and heat up the pan first before I cook, I forgot it completely after I picked up the phone then my alarm went off, I realized I forgot the stove is on. Fortunately I have the very sensitive alarm so I notice quickly in case I really forget...
Thanks for sharing! :-)

Yes, it happens some times. I don't do a lot of cooking, since my sister in law does it. But I have seen her forget things she'z cooking quite some times and getting herself engaged in something else. It happens most of the times when she puts the milk to boil. Actually there is nothing much to do there, and one gets bored and moves to something else for few minutes, and ultimately forget about it until it boils over the container and foul smell is all around, which alarms us about the ill fate of the milk!

Yeah couple of times.. Just yesterday I forgot that i was cooking rice. I went to our bedroom and check some sites on the internet. I heard some whizzling and like water dripping sound so i was thinking that its raining again. I just continued until I can smell something was burning. I hurriedly went out and found out that its the rice i was cooking. The top part was brownish and the bottom part was black. Unfortuntely i had to throw away the rice, such a waste.

Sometimes I forgot that I'm cooking a rice when I found out when I smelled something is burning. I try to avoid this thing to happen again. My sister often forgot that she's cooking to the point the the fire in the stove goes up. My mother always got nervous with this so she don't let my sister cook again. So we are very careful now to avoid fire accidents. I think presence of mind is important you need to turn off the gas first and then the stove so the fire would stop.

Thankfully, I've never caught anything on fire due to forgetting about it, but I have hardboiled eggs until all the water had boiled off, and only remembered about them when I heard popping sounds...the eggs were exploding! I've actually done that more than once, believe it or not. I don't know what my subconscious has against eggs, but I seem to torture them more often than not.
I have also come home from work to find my soup with no more liquid in it! I had left it on the stove to slow cook all day, and there was a leak in the lid somewhere and all of the liquid boiled off.

I'm always burning things or letting pots boil dry. My office, where the computer is, is in another room away from the kitchen, so I try to do two things at once - cook and work. It doesn't work out very well. I had to buy a new set of pans because my old set had been burned so many times the bottoms (aluminum over stainless steel) were separating from the pot. That's embarrassing; I've been cooking for about 50 years so you'd think I could do better.

I usually leave cooking and do computer stuff but I can see the kitchen on my computer seat so it is okay for me, still need to be careful though. Thanks for sharing! :-)

One time after supper for some reason I had one chicken left over so I was going to cook in and put it in fridge for the next day to use. So I put chicken in the pan and went outside thinking I'll come back in 5 minutes and turn it over. Well of course that never happened and later my son went in the house and the kitchen is filled with smoke. Fortunately no fire, but we opened all the windows my husband was very irritated with me to say the least. So I try not to even leave the kitchen when I'm cooking.

guilty! I have done this quite a few times. I've been lucky in that i've caught it before anything too disastrous has happened. The very worse that has happened is that I've had to come up with a new meal. I have never put anything on the stove and left the house and I don't think I would. Before leaving my home, I always do a quick check to make sure all is off and unplugged....candles blown etc.

Hi mermaidivy, yes there has been instances when i forgot that i have put things on the gas burner while i was happily chatting away. It happened on two or three occasions and every time it was that i had put chicken in the pressure cooker for my dog and then went to computer totally forgot that something is on gas and it cooked and cooked and water from cooker evaporated and i only realised when the burnt smell filled the whole house and the cooker got totally black from inside. I have been careful after i did it thrice i think. Now i dont go to computer till her food is done and it takes only 15 mins or so to make her food.

I have never forgotten anything on the stove or anything in the oven. I don't cook too often so, when I do, I pay particular attention to it. I have many times, though, put things in the microwave to warm up or a frozen dinner to cook and gotten distracted by a task and forgotten that I was even doing that until I walk into the kitchen and see it sitting in the microwave.

At least you can set the timer in the microwave so it won't get problems. Thanks for responding! :-)

I never do that since I usually continue working in the kitchen while waiting for the meals to cook (ie: washing dishes, cleaning, etc) but my mom is always forgetful. Even today she burnt one of the main meal when she watch tv while waiting for it. Two days ago, she nearly burnt meat curry when she went outside to do something and she end up chatting with my neighbour for too long. If she cook something in the kitchen, I have to check whether she leave it to cook or to burn. Eventually she'll blame me (even if it's not my fault ) when she burnt something.

fortunately, it never happen to me... i am always very careful when it comes to cooking as i don't want to set my house on fire... if i have to leave it, i will set a timer and it will ring to remind me that i have to check my cooking... also, sometimes my hubby will remind me as well when i am too tired or forget before the food becomes burnt... take care and have a nice day...

Hi mermaidivy, I am very careful while cooking so no disasters so far. But i have had milk boil over many a times. I also had one major incident once. I had asked my daughter to look after the pressure cooker and switch it off after the whistle and she forgot about it , and we were both on the balcony when we heard a loud bang from the kitchen, and we ran inside remembering the cooker - rightly so the cooker had burst after the pressure had built up and the kitchen was a mess..my daughter was very guilty , but it has made her very careful now and it has made me more careful, i never fail to peep into the kitchen every now and then to see what is happening

I can say I've never forgotten I was cooking anything, but have had to go to tend to other business, like a child falling down and getting hurt, the phone ringing, someone at the door and the pot is boiling over, or i'm burning my garlic bread in the oven.

It happens sometimes. I cooked potatoes after all water vanished as steam out the kettle and the bottom of the kettle became black. I didn't forget that I was cooking, I just didn't realise how fast the water leaves the kettle. Well, the potatoes tasted a bit odd but the kettle was normal again after I had washed it.
