In about a month, my husband and I will be watching a 4-year-old boy and a 6-month-old girl for the weekend. We have been considering taking them to the zoo for the weekend. I have been told the boy loves the zoo! I always loved the elephants when I was little. They always seemed so huge but lovable! I loved watching them spray themselves with water.
If we do go to the zoo, we will probably pack a lunch to take to save some money.
Im not sure what else to expect from the zoo, it has been so long since we have been there. Does anyone have any advice on what we should bring? Do you think it is a bad idea to take kids of these ages to the zoo?
When was the last time you went to the zoo? What was your favorite zoo animal as a kid?

Uless the children are big time behavior problems, it's never a bad idea to take them to the zoo! I think the younger you begin taking them, the sooner they will have an appreciation for such and the quicker you can begin the "training" on how they are to behave on outings.
I would suggest taking several little snacks instead of a "meal" for them to eat. Simple finger foods work well as well and individual drink packages. It makes it a little more "fun" for them to eat and less expensive for you as prices are usually jacked up places like that!
I took a 10 year old to the zoo last September. It was great!
I don't have a favorite... I like all of them!

Taking children to zoo is a good idea. I always go to park near my house with daughter. She like little, lovely, animals in children's nature.
those little animals seem to be more interesting to child than to adult. they will hobnob with children rather than adult. Is they feel safety ,when they are faced with kid ?

Maybe it's because children are smaller and less intimidating than the adults. I really do not know. It may also be that the animal can sense the innocent nature of children.

I know that this discussion is 3 years old, so I won't bother to give you any advice LOL, but I will answer the last two questions.
I haven't been to the zoo in a while. The last time I went was back in 2007, I believe. I had a season pass (or was it a yearly pass?) for my family and I, but was only able to use it twice before my car blew up. Not that it mattered. My kids didn't really enjoy it the last time we were there anyway, so we haven't bothered to go back since.
By the way, my favorite zoo animals have always been the big cats, especially tigers and leopards. They are just so beautiful as well as majestic!
Happy mylotting!

Sometimes I think it was easier to take the kids to the zoo then as opposed to now!! Now they want to run in opposite directions and see different things!! My nephew loves the reptiles. My niece loves the monkeys!
At our local zoo, they have some fantastic big cats!! There are currently 3 brand new cubs!! Two snow leopards and I believe the other is a jaguar. They should be out for everyone to see at the end of the month. Im pretty excited!
I even went to the zoo in January while it was snowing. The snow leopard was very active then!! It was pretty cool to watch. I definitely recommend going in colder weather if you get the chance!

Hi! It will be a good idea to get your huband and kids to a zoo. Especially, it will be a wonderful and enjoyable experience to your four year master. Packing lunch to save some money sounds great but at the same time if you could have a couple of packs of baked beans or grams and a pack of maize pop corn that will add good fun for you and your four year boy. You can through this stuff to monkeys, rabbits, deers and birds like parrots etc. When you through these things to them they will come near you and you will have better fun with them. Beware that you have to keep your kids away from the fence of wild animals lest they may not hurt them. Good luck to have fun with the animals.

I want to take my son to the zoo. Lately he has become obsessed with madagascar and the lion and the shark. So I want to take him to the zoo. He is only 2 but i think he would enjoy a short trip. I dont want to take him to the mobile one because it sucks. I went there about when he was too young to even know where he was. I think the zoo is a great outing for any age.

I love going to the zoo. I love just sitting there and watching the animals (I know it doesn't take much to entertain me). Things I would bring would be weather related. If it's cloudy, ponchos and maybe an umbrella. If it's sunny, sunscreen and hats.
Bring some water bottles, drinks for 4 can add up fast and if it's warm you will be needing to get refills.
Maybe go on the zoo's website and see if they have some indoor attractions where the kids can cool down and relax. You'll definitely want a stroller with the baby, but you might also want to bring a light stroller for the 4 year old because if he gets tired, walking will be the last thing he wants to do, and toting around a crabby four year old could end the day.
Have fun!

I started taking my son to the zoo when he was about a year of age. I agree to bring stollers for both children as there is a lot of walking involved, although some zoos rent them if needed. We also bring sunscreen and hats. Finger foods is a great idea. We bring along hand sanitzer as well to use before they eat. Make sure the kids wash really well before eating anything. I love taking my son to the zoo. It is a fun way to get him out of the house and give him some exercise as well as teach him about the animals. I used to volunteer and worked with the chimps at our local zoo. The chimps are definitely my favorite as they are so entertaining.

Hand sanitizer! I hadnt thought of that! We would have ended up using baby wipes!
Im not worried about the stroller. I will be using the one that their mom uses. It has a place for the baby and a place for the 4 year old to sit or stand!
Thanks for the tips!
Volunteering at the zoo sounds like tons of fun! I can only imagine how awesome it must have been to work with the chimps!

Just keep them in strollers as much as you can. And hold on to their hands tight when they have to get out of the strollers, if they get away even for a second they could get lost really easily at a zoo. Make sure you bring some sun block for them, and maybe some little hats to protect their heads. Be careful when putting sun block on their little faces, make sure you don't get it near their eyes. Just a tiny dab on their cheeks. Also water bottles for the 4 year old and yourself, not just for lunch for the entire day. Also some method of keep juice or formula cold for the 6 month old in her bottle. Just make sure both kids keep hydrated, and don't take your eyes off of them for a moment.

I think that it is a great idea. I would take along two strollers, one for the baby and one for the 4 year old. Chances are, he won't want to walk the entire time, and I am sure that you don't want to have to carry him around. I would also be sure to pack plenty of supplies for the baby, sunblock, snacks, and drinks. You want to be able to enjoy the time there rather than spend it with the 4 year old getting upset when he can't have a snack or drink right away because you don't have any handy. Oh yeah!! Don't forget the camera!!
My husband and I took the kids to the zoo almost 2 years ago. We really had a good time and so did the kids. I have always liked to see the penguins and polar bears. In general, I just like to watch the animals interact!

When I was little, my father took us often to the zoo. My mother would not always come with us, it was a father and children outing on Sunday mornings.
My husband and I took our children and our girls take my grandchildren. I think that when we first sutated to take our kids, the youngest girl still had diapers.
I am invited once in a while now to the zoo with my grandchildren. The smallest like to draw the animals they see and then give me their drawings.
My favorite animal when I was a kid was Fresia, the elephant.

my house is pretty near from the zoo, so... when my big family comes to play I usually take them to the zoo, It's a good idea to take your family to the zoo, not only it's cheap, but also educational.
I don't think there will be any problem with bring one or two kids to the zoo, just keep eye on them, you should do just fine, they know how to having fun in the zoo more than us, they will find everything there interesting.
packed lunch is a good idea, but usually I'm not bothering to bring some water, since I can get them pretty cheap already, and they are the most heavy.

The last time I went to the zoo was in March. I took my 2 granddaughters. One of them is 6 1/2 years old and the other one is 21 months old. My 6 1/2 year old loves the zoo and the last time we took the 21 months old she did too. We took them last fall to the zoo and my youngest granddaughter was only 14 months old but this time since she is older she really enjoy it.

I thing its a fantastic idea to take children of this age to the zoo. Young children really enjoy watching animals of so many different varities. They really get fascinated. My daughter feels so amazed even when she sees a monkey or a parrot. Along with the lucnh I think you should also carry something like wafers , popcorns etc.

Well its a nice place for kids as a knowledge wise and nice time for them. I love deer, as they seem to be a most respectable timid animal.

well it is good to take kids to the zoo, and show them the nature and their rules. the tigers the lions the deers etc. they are a part of the Eco system and they should know how important it is to the nature.
