dumb way to kill someone #1

Ok so I'm going to start posting a bit here and there about some things people do that are so... dumb. In this case a woman killed another because she was driving and painting her nails at the same time. Um... WOW... can you imagine the turn her life is going to take now? I wonder what shades of polish she'll be allowed in jail for the manslaughter (at least) charge? Here's the link if you want to read it: http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2009/05/motorcyclist-killed-by-driver-painting-fingernails.html What punishment do you think she should get? I'm thinking.....

I'd call that manslaughter. She was doing something that made driving overly dangerous causing someone to be killed. Accidentally killing someone because of your negligence is pretty close to the definition of manslaughter isn't it?

Yes it is. Or involuntary vehicular manslaughter to be closer to what they are using.

She should have her fingernails ripped out with no anesthetic and lost her privilege to drive for the rest of her life. That won't come close to the pain suffered by Anita Zaffke's family and loved ones, but Hunt never forget how stupid and self-centered she was. I have NO patience with people who do things other than drive when they are behind the wheel. They have no regard for anyone else and when someone is seen doing their nails, talking on the phone, etc. while they drive they should be arrested and lose their license.

Amen dragon! It may seem like going back in history to make the punishment fit the crime but the way progress is going, we were better off with horses and carts!

Child molesters are my biggest sore point, that's true. Again and again they are let go to ruin a child's life and it seems that the law doesn't think much of our children. The judges can only apply the laws, many of them would like to lock away or execute molesters but the law doesn't allow those options. We need to change the laws so judges can effectively protect our children. I also have no patience with self-absorbed people who think the world revolves around them, like this idiot who killed that poor woman. Thanks for letting me vent!

I laughed a little when I read your responses to this and the punishment discussion.... because I could even picture you talking about this and how animated your face must become because it is surely something you feel VERY strongly about. Child molester/abusers are your biggest sore point. Anyway... Bet that punishment would fit the crime very well. She didn't think and look at the cost?

I agree that a harsh penalty should be applied to those who are involved in accidents while distracted. I'm concerned about abuse people seeking to cause accidents because a person is distracted. I look to my own case, I had a distracted drive interfere with my progress, he wasn't so distracted that he struck me, but he failed to pay attention to a significant point or marking on the roadway and crossed the line. That caused an accident behind me and for that I should be punished because I am a witness to all of the details and lies that would be offered up to create a mess for my life and the life of my family. And yet I'm worried about other people getting abused and seeking to claim people are distracted in order to gain money or power and control. I see bad things will happen as more people scam the system.

THAT is the point Chimes! A drunk driver ploughed into a group of people waiting at the bus stop here in Italy not long ago. Parents and children killed as they started their day and he is now under house arrest in a different locality. So unfair!

Too many holes in an already flawed system.... you are right to be concerned. Some get charged with stupid things (like not having a visible address on a house they don't own) while more serious cries are forgotten.

What an idiot! For starters, there are a number of things she should be charged with..... Criminal negligence and manslaughter come to mind first and foremost and there are surely traffic offences that can be added to the mix also such as driving without due care and attention. As for punishment, she should receive the full sentences allowable by law for each of the charges she's found guilty of and if the sentences end up short, she certainly shouldn't be allowed to ever drive again! Ignorance is not an excuse! Her actions show a blatant disregard for anyone but herself, a complete lack of common sense and arguing the "accident" card's a cop out. What a shame there isn't such a charge as "living one's life as a complete and utter moron".

The fact that you said "at times" would actually make it very difficult to charge you with such an offence.

Maybe she'll claim the fumes went to her head. But seriously, it should be handled like any other case where somebody was killed due to doing something stupid while driving. Maybe with an extra slap on the wrist, if that's possible...

Fumes wouldn't have gone to her head if she had left the cap on.... I'm not sure much will be done with her... a loss of her licence is the latest I've heard. I'm looking for a follow up article.

How idiotic is that??!! And that was in Chicago? Wow! Stupid people sure get away with alot. I wonder what they will come up with for her. She should be tried for manslaughter because that is what transpired. Anyone their right mind knows not to do such a thing. She better not get off with a neglectful driving sitation or something. Oh, my gosh!

When I saw it on the news I couldn't wait to share it with you people. I knew I wouldn't be the only one with their jaw dropped to the floor. I'll post if they tells us what's next for her as a follow up.... we can all get mad together if all she gets is her licence pulled.

They should use the same punishment system as they do for driving drunk. Her stupid decision had her "Driving impaired". It's manslaughter.

That is just insane!! She could have just stayed home and painted her nails. She should get what she deserves. I mean honestly there is no excuse for having to paint your nails while driving!! Glad you shared this with all of us. Can't wait to see the rest of them.

It is actually funny and at the same time silly. That is why people say women drivers are worse than men. This is a clear example. Hopefully this will not attract copycats who might to kill people while putting make up or ironing their hair. This will definitely bring more bad reputation to women drivers.

Hi TLChimes, Yes she should be jailed, what a stupid woam, no regards for anyone, and also the is a case goong on at this very moment about a woman who killed a eleven year boy walking with his friends on the pavement when this woman crashed her her and ended up kmounted on the pavement killing this little boy, she then got out of the car and ran off, police are looking for her to come forward. What is wrong with this woman? have she no remorse? Tamara

That is just so tragic! Just one minute of gross carelessness caused an innocent bystander her life! It makes me so angry at people who would do something so stupid! If people like her wants to paint your nails or put makeup on, then they should just stay home and not endanger other people's lives just because they are so stupid to know better! I feel so bad for the victim's family. What a lousy way to go! I think this person should be put in jail for the rest of her life! It is a little harsh but one could just imagine the pain of the family of the person she killed just because of her inability to THINK!

You about summed up how I felt when I first saw the story. I have seen so many folks hurt because of people just not thinking.

A lot of people still don't realise that a car is a deadly weapon and needs ones concentration at all times. I think she should have the book thrown at her. I always had this idea that the crime should be tattooed on the persons forehead so they will always have the shame of being labeled as a killer or such.

What if they run out of room on their forehead? I can almost hear the pick up lines in the clubs now... "So, you killed someone while painting your nails? Wow, I do love that shade of red. Yes, I'm a wife beater? Well, she deserved it. Want to go back to my place?"

Hello TL,I think this woman should serve the maximum time in prison for this. What was so dire that she had to paint her nails just then. When you get behind the wheel of a car you should be focused.I refuse to use or answer my cell phone while driving,it's just not worth my life or someone elses. All it takes is one moments hesitation or distraction and it's over. Not to mention the devestation the family of the cyclist will have to go through.I hope her nails shrivel up and I wonder how she can sleep at night knowing her negligence and stupidity cost someone their life.I hope the throw the book at her.

I'm with you on this one. I don't drive anymore (medical reason though honestly I stopped driving a year or so after I started) but when I did I never allowed the backseat (kids) the phone or other stuff get in the way of the road in front of me.

Well I think that it's really a dumb way to kill someone. To think that just because of painting your nails you would unintentionally kill someone. I'd be very very very depressed if that would happen to me. But we can't do anything, even if she didn't mean to, she will still pay the consequences of her carelessness and regret what she have done, for a long time. Well maybe a lifetime imprisonment which can change based on her behavior inside the prison.
