I also need to lower my cholesterol. I get cravings sometimes in the evenings and although I try to keep the things I crave out of the house, I have been known to go out to buy it or I make it. I wanted cookies the other night and came up with something that I consider to be a good substitute. I had a small amount (1/3 cup) of dry honey sweetened oat rings. Store brand of Honey Nut Cheerios. It fixed the cravings quickly and I think in a lower fat, healthier way. If I had cookies I would have to eat them all. Do you have any healthy substitutions to share?

Soy nuts are good for a salty craving. Frozen fat free yogurt instead of ice cream is good too.

I have a little hand freezer that I used to just freeze regular yogurt in. It was great. I do not snack much, but I just eat way too much when I do eat.

I'm not sure if it's healthy but I buy the Kroger generic Fruit Loops. I like to have them about 3x a week. I like Quaker caramel rice cakes. Both of those have low cholesterol. I have high cholesterol. I stay away from a lot of meat and try to concentrate on vegetables and fruit, which is hard for someone who generally hate both!! Pineapple is sweet so since I like sweets, I try to incorporate pineapple in everything I can. I like green beans and I like Chinese cuisine. I mix both. You need to incorporate what you love into what is good for you.

I have started carrying fruit in the car, as I do love it. My meal schedule often gets messed up and I will leave work when it is past time for a meal. I will eat a half grapefruit (peeled like an orange) or a clementine, cause they peel easily.

Slim Fast has great snack bars. They are really filling, and they actually taste good. I also eat fruit when I have a craving. Experts recommend fruit with a high water content. My favorites are watermelon and canteloupe. I've been eating a lot of canteloupe. Also, have you seen that cookie diet commercial? I'm not advocating that diet, but I saw the cookies in a health food store. Maybe that would satisfy some of your cravings.

I think summer will favor me, because of the fresh fruits and veggies. I just have to get under control. I do not often have cravings. I will have to compare the Slim Fast bars to the High Fiber Kellogs bars and check out the difference. I am surprised I did not go for one of those when I wanted cookies. The cereal had fewer calories and less fat, I think.

I tried the slim fast shake one time and it made me nauseated. Maybe the snack bars are different. I love cantaloupe and watermelon, though. I eat both of these a lot during the summer. Have a good night and happy mylotting! Kathy.

I love milkshakes, but instead of buying the sugary ones they sell in fast food places or ice cream shops I make my own healthy substitutes. One of my favorites is a cranberry pina colada. I throw a handful of frozen whole cranberries into the Magic Bullet blender with orange/pineapple drink and turn that into mush and then add coconut milk, regular milk and enough ice cubes to make it thick and blend again. If the coconut milk is not sweetened I add a little honey or agave syrup or low glycemic birch sugar. Very nice on a hot day. Another favorite is my yam shake, made from a cooked sweet potato, honey, and milk. To me that tastes better than a store-bought shake and it is very healthy. Good luck in losing weight. I lost around 20 lbs this spring fixing up a fixer-upper and also pushing a friend who was unable to walk for a while around in a wheel chair. Now all my walking shorts are too big around the waist and if I put my keys in one pocket and wallet in the other, I am concerned that they might fall down! I had to start carrying a handbag again...until I can find time to go shopping or get out the sewing machine and alter these clothes. Oh, my!

That yam shake sounds wonderful. I have stevia, but I have not tried the agave nectar, yet. I can get it at the grocery. Not sure about birch sugar. I would love to find cranberries anywhere this time of year. I have craisins, but they are made with sugar.

Kathy, thanks! I sure wasn't trying--all the exercise caring for my sick friend and little time to eat just made it inevitable. A Magic Bullet is indispensable for healthy eating, I think. I use mine to turn uncooked oatmeal into oat flour, a little bit at a time, which I use to healthy up all kinds of foods. We don't use white wheat flour at all and by itself whole wheat is too heavy for some things. It is smaller than a regular blender and therefore very easy to clean up. GardenGerty, we buy several packages of the fresh whole cranberries when they are on sale and put them away in the freezer to use out of season. In the stores they are hard to find, even frozen, certain times of the year :-(

Congratulations on losing so much weight!! I need to lose about ten or fifteen pounds, myself. I'm not significantly overweight, though. I try to watch what I eat most of the time. These sound like very good substitutes. I would like to try them but I don't have a blender. Kathy.

I find the things i crave are chips - salty crunchie salt and vinegar, or ketchup or bacon chips. I substitute tortilla chips with salsa and sour cream. I find i eat about 10 of these and a bag lasts ages longer than a bag of anything else - id consume the whole bag of anything else in one night. the other substitute i use is popcorn - i make hot air popped corn with becel spray butter (has fewer calories) and flavoured popcorn topping for the flavour im craving. If im feeling snacky i try to get fruits or veggies in dip rather than even those substitutes.

Yes, chips and salsa are great. I do not usually snack, I just sit a lot when I come home. With my son living here (he is separated) I feel like I have to cook and that is doing me in. Hubby works evenings, and if I was home alone, chips and salsa might be my whole meal. I like fat free sour cream, but of course that is not what we have here. The guys are both skinny.

My parents do - i rent the other house they have from them and keep the bulls every winter and get 25 heifers on the place in the summer. The calf in the picture was one of my younger sister's favourites this spring. I go over and help with calving and feeding and that sort of stuff.

I need to lose some weight too. I try not to have lots of junk food in the house. I like to have cereal for a night time snack. It satisfies the munchies and is healthy and not junk food. Popcorn and pretzles are some good munchies with some crunch that aren't too high in calories. If you like eating ice cream, you can get the sugar free kind or the yogurt. I really like having ice cream. Good luck on lowering your cholesterol and dropping some pounds.

I am lucky to not really crave ice cream. I crave things like pizza and tacos. I love savory foods, but I put a lot of cheese and sour cream with them, and that is part of the issue.

I like things that have real sugar, just less of it. No one can force a weight loss, it just keeps coming back. I know I need to just find a lifestyle exercise. Like Dranhh with her wheelchair bound friend. If I do not think about exercise, it is a lot easier to do it.

Popcorn is a great substitute for greasier chips. You can even get the caramel microwaved popcorn and it's so much healthier for those nights when you have a sweet tooth than a candy bar. I also began purchasing the 100 calorie packs!

My husband and I have those same cravings. he loves chocolate and I love Ice cream and cookies. so we decided when we get those cravings to eat fruit. I take Peaches, Pineapples, and grapes and mix them with low fat cottage cheese and some cruch up a honey oat bar on top and it does the trick. its sweet and much healthier than ice cream or chocolate :o)

That is a great way to do it. For chocolate cravers one Hershey's kiss is enough to kill the crave and won't throw you off the diet (so says my dietitian- for diabetes) There are lots of "tricks" it's just finding them. The biggest thing that hit me was when she showed me just how many of those bite sized mini-wheat cereal I can eat..... we counted them out... 12 just twelve bites. I think I hit the floor. But 12 actually makes a good afternoon snack. And counting them out makes a great reminder. I don't do cereal for breakfast or dinner because it throws off my sugar levels. If you get more "tricks" lit me know.... it'll be fun to trade them off.

I lost weight with Weigh Down Workshop, about twelve years ago. One tip there for candy and chocolate cravings was to buy a small bag of M&M's, peanut, preferably, and dissolve them slowly in your mouth. By the time you have done about seven, you have had all the chocolate you need, without overdoing it. Savoring each little bit.

This is a great suggestion for curing chocolate cravings. Have you ever tried the weight watchers diet? I went in the summer of 1973 and got down to my goal weight. I stuck with it after I quit and lost too much weight, though. I was wanting a really flat stomach and that was the best way I could achieve it. However, my family worried about me being so thin.. I gained quite a bit of it back and I went back to weight watchers in 1983. I lost quite a bit then but not near as much. I think it's one of the best diets around. Later, my doctor put me on a high fiber diet to help me lose. Plus, I was having some personal problems, anyway. Kathy.

I can't think of anything. I'm always trying to watch my weight, though. I'm not significantly overweight but I worry about gaining all the time. I'm 5'6" and weigh around 155. That's what I weighed the last time I went to the doctor, anyway. I haven't always been this big. I used to be able to stay in the 130's or 140s range. My family thinks I'm crazy because I'm concerned about it so. I take after my daddy's side of the family and it runs on his side to be big. This sounds like a very good substitute, though. I might like to try this sometime.

If you muscle up easily or if you have big bones, then 155 is probably good for you. When I was younger, and I would weigh 165 I could wear a size ten or twelve. I was very ill once, lost tons of weight, and still wore a 9. I just do not get smaller than that. I let my weight get away from me when I met my new husband, and he likes "big" ladies. He realizes, though, that my joints would be happier about fifty pounds lighter.

I've always been pretty strong so I'm pretty well muscled up I guess. I attribute this to saddling horses and riding horseback. This does make you pretty strong, believe it or not. I volunteer at a therapeutic riding center and the saddles we use out there are synthetic saddles, which means they're not very heavy. Most of the saddles I've had to use in the past were pretty heavy, though. I also attribute my strength to playing the guitar. I was watching "Crook & Chase" one night several years ago and Lorianne Crook said that guitar players are strong. I guess it's because we press on the strings so much. Plus, I have a preety heavy guitar I have to lug around. Kathy.

Whenever I need to nibble during a diet, I find nuts, or celery filled with Primula cheese are great for suppressing the appetite. Then, the diet I normally follow is low carb, and nuts wouldn't help your cholesterol, but celery would, and carrots with a low fat dip are pretty tasty too, especially the young, baby ones. Brightest Blessings and good luck with your diet.

I don't know about other nuts, but my sister was told to cut down on peanuts. It might be the roasted ones though with oil and salt added. I like Brazils and Pecans best but I don't have roasted ones, and I'm allowed so many a day. I'm glad to hear your other tests were good.

Gerty, I am on that divorce diet. I am losing 230 pounds. (of course, that weight was my husband) LOL Ok, seriously........I just eat less or smaller amounts of everything. I eat only when hungry. I also drink a lot of water. When I get a craving for something, I eat enough to get the taste and flavor. I don't eat the whole thing. If I did that, then I would not have any the next time I want that item. I also suck on small suckers or hard candies as that helps to curb some of the cravings. Good luck, Gerty. I hope you do well and are successful. Please let us know how things progress. You need to stay healthy so we don't lose you early in life. ((hugs))

I think eating a small amount of whatever is a good idea. I am actually pretty healthy, but need to get in control before things get really messed up. Looking at the blood chemistry report it is my overall cholesterol (as well as my body fat) that puts the stress out there. On the other hand, my triglycerides and blood sugar are fine, and I had worried about both of them, due to family history.

Good morning GardenGerty...slap my fingers, you will not be pleased with my answer!I do not have healthy substitutes, BUT when that "sugar" craving is driving me to search cupboards for fulfillmnent, I have an easy & sweet substitute....a 5 minute chocolate cake in a mug! Yes, you mix it all in a coffee mug, and cook it in the microwave (add things like chocolate chips, nuts, etc.) but you can't over indulge because it is only one serving! I feel decadent when consuming, but it seems to satisfy me for days! If you would like the recipe, I will PM it to you! Mmmm..and it's easy to count the calories in it, and just reduce the next days consumption! Cheers...and have a great day, and by the way "Happy Mother's Day" this Sunday!

We did this a few years ago when my hubby had a 5 part bypass. We had no idea we had a problem until this happened. Things that never entered our kitchen again were, butter, regular milk, bacon, meat that was not low fat, any other dairy products that were not low fat. Vegetables, seeds, nuts and fruit took major roles in all our meals.

I still prefer real butter over most margarines. I did buy some transfat free margarine that I like, but I like it too well, I use it more often than I did the butter. Milk and yogurt are always low fat. I just do huge quantities of too many things, I think.

My friends do not play basketball, but I sit too much at the computer, it is true. I hope my gardening, even though it is small, will be helpful to my weightloss. The cold cereal I ate as a snack is also an oat cereal. I am determined to lower cholesterol with healthy foods like oats.
