hi mylotters... me and my hubby are planning to go on a self-guided tour in november this year... this is our first time to go to japan on a self-guided tour and we plan to visit 5 cities... tokyo, takayama, kyoto, osaka and hiroshima... we are just scared that we will get lost there as we will be using the shinkansen (bullet train) to travel from one city to another... so we will appreciate it if any mylotters here who have been to japan before can give us any help or advice... is it really difficult to travel on shinkansen??? can the japanese people speak english??? thanks in advance for responding to my discussion... take care and have a nice day...

Hi lingli! Most can speak some English. There is so much there to see and I am so excited for you. I went to Kyoto and there is no guide needed for there. They are funny about pictures there though. There are beautiful gardens and temples with so much history. You will find these people to be very gracious and respectful. Bullet trains are great and yes...a little confusing because the directions are in Japanese. I would suggest an English book of some type to help you along. You are going to have so much fun! Take care.
