Today i went to buy Pedigree ( food) for my dog, the shopkeeper told me that you always buy same food for your dog when you should always keep changing your dogs food brand. This is good for dog and help in stopping allergies to dog. I found this thing absurd but when i reached home i thought more about it and then i thought may be it is wise to ask here as there are so many learned pet owners.. so what do u advise my fellow mylotters

Hi Agrim, Well i think the shopkeeper is trying to sell you something which he has not been able to sell and might have brought in excessive amounts and must be near expiry date. This is something what i think is really rubbish. It is like saying that you shdnt be eating roties but change to bread or nan daily as you might get allergic to roties. DOnt go by what he says i think he got some motives in telling you this.

Hi asweetie, Thanks for responding to my discussion and i too have similar kind of doubts because he was keen to sell me a particular brand which i have never heard of and was ready to give me some discount if i brought a 10 kilogram pack. Since you know me and you also know it is very difficult for me to say no but i somehow made an excuse and brought only the one which i wanted by telling a lie to him that her vet has clearly told me that she should eat only this brand of food.

i was told that if you change the dog's food you need to transition it in with his old food or else it could result in diarrhea (who wants to deal with that?) and stomach upset. to be honest i cannot afford a very expensive food for my dog so i use coupons and i found yesterday that there is a brand at shop rite that is always reasonalbe so i will stick with that from now on.

hi mikeysmom, Thanks for the response and thanks for letting me know that if i am not careful with the brands she might get sick and i dont certainly want her to get diarrhea or dysentery. She like Pedigree food and i always give her that, though i tried many brands including expensive ones when she was a puppy but she liked only Pedigree so i got to stick with this only.

Here is an article on how to change food and some guidelines. http://www.ehow.com/how_4478760_change-brands-dog-food.html I have never heard about changing the food thing all the time. What I would do if I were you is not take a shop keepers word for it but put in a call to your vet. Your vet would know what's best for your dog better than a shopkeeper. She might have a valid point but she doesn't know your pet as well as your vet does. So double check with your vet first. Ok.

hi bellaofchaos for the response and thanks for the nice site about change of dog food but i didnt want to change the food of the dog as she is happy eating it and her growth is good. It was just the shop keeper wanting me to change it , i dont know exact reason of it. And if i would change her brand i would ask my vet about the brand which i can give her and the brand which my shopkeeper wanted me to buy i would ask about that too from my vet

I don't think so, well it must be changed depending on the dog's age, obviously because there are dogfoods designed for puppies only or for adult dogs, also depending on the weight of the pet. I am still using Pedigree for my doberman and Eukanuba for my shih tzu, they're both three years now and growing healthily.

hi mjmlagat, Thanks for responding to my discussion and my dog is now about 2 years and 3 months old so her growth is over by now and since she is pretty fussy in what she eats , i have to stick with the brand which she likes. I dont want to buy a big sac of dog food and then she rejecting the food and then i would be struck with that food. She might not like the new brand and if she doesnt then nothing in world would make her eat even if she goes hungry for two days.

If you do change dog food, be sure to mix the new dog food with the old for about a week, so as to avoid upsetting their stomachs. After that, you can use the new food, and everything should be fine then. That is what I was told when I had taken my oldest dog for training. I have done that ever since, and no problems whatsoever. Right now my dogs are eating Nutrish, which is dog food that Rachael Ray made and it has meat in it as the first ingredient. I was also told that by the trainer that the dog food should always have eaat in it and it should be the very first ingredient in the list. So I looked for that when I changed their food to what they are eating now. Have a good day, and happy mylotting.

Thanks rosekiss for the response and i think it does make sense if you mix a little bit of the old brand with the new brand so the dog gets some familiar taste and might eat the food. But i am really afraid as my dog is pretty fussy what she eats and i cant risk a 25 pound food sac and my dog doesnt like it so it would waste a lot of money for me. Yes meat is in all the dog foods and my dog loves chicken and i give her boiled chicken daily.

I think not, if what is the brand you used now then it will be . If your dog not used with branded products like different extra food after you eat your meals then you can change it. while it is already tasted the branded one she like it and if u change other brand it will amaze. Maybe there will be changes in its eating appetite.

Thanks genius tiger for the response and i think you are right and i would stick to the food she is accustomed to and since my dog is very fussy in what she eat i might be struck with a big sac of dog food and she might not eat the new brand.

Changing their food has a tendancy to upset their stomach. You should stay with the same food. This is what the vet says. If you wish you can give them treats or add some food to what they are use to eating.

Hi moon dancer, Thanks for responding to my discussion and i been staying with same commercial food and i buy in bulk like a 25 pound sack for her so i dont have to rush to shop every now and then and what i think was that he was struck with some brand of food in some good quantities and wanted to get rid of that food before it goes stale. Or may be he is getting better commission from some other company.

not always a good idea..unless you like dog farts,i'm serious. sometimes constantly changing a dog's diet will give them terrible gas.

i keep to the same dog and cat food for my pets if they seem to enjoy it. but its not a bad idea to occasionally try some different food. but dont keep constantly changing the food. i dont know anything about animals and allergies , I think it might be a ploy by the shopkeeper to get you to try more expensive brands. stick with what you know , thats the best idea.

Hi margeryday 14, Thanks for responding to my discussion, Yes i thought so about some expensive brand but more than that knowing Indian shopkeepers, he might have brought large quantities of some brand thinking it would be easily sold by him if he puts on display ( he might have got big discounts) or some brand going stale as its manufacturing date is old. Somehow he is not able to sell that brand much and is struck with it and now trying everyone to buy some from it and since i always buy a 25 pounds sack of food for my dog so i dont have to go time and again to market, he thought may be if i buy one sack it might lessen his load a little.

Dogs are scavengers and unlike cats are not very picky about their food. If you are feeding a full nutritious food there is no reason to change. In fact and upset tummy can result from changes in food.

Hi savypat, Thanks for responding to my discussion. Yes i am giving her pedigree and then home made food too and one liter of milk and about 250 grams about half a pound of boneless chicken ( boiled ) too. SO i guess i am taking care that she gets enough food for her and yet not gets all the fatty food and then i make sure she is walked 5 miles a day even by me or some other members of family. so i thought it is ok enough for her but i dont know why that shop keeper said. May be he had some brand which he is not able to sell and his stock is piling up.

If you change the dog food then you want to do it gradually because the sudden change can cause issues that lead to runny stool and tummy troubles. My dogs love their food so I never change it unless the stores do not have that specific kind, then I stay with the same brand and buy a different flavor.

I dont think it is wise to always change the food of your pet. It can cause some problems for digestion or even urinary problems. If you are feeding your pet a nutrition rich food, then I dont think it is necessary to constantly change brands. However, if your vet says that your pet has a problem, you should talk to them about the food your pet is eating. Some different pets have different requirements for their health. My cat needs a specific food because he was always having urinary tract infections. Switching his food would be bad for him! If you have been feeding your dog the same food for a while and your dog has always been healthy, I would ignore the shopkeeper. If you think your dog might have some health problems, the best person to contact is your vet.

Thanks derlila Stern for the response and yes i do take care that she gets everything she needs and like humans she gets change of taste from time to time. Though my dog is very fussy about what she eats, looks like she wants to go to beauty pageant . Seriously she doesnt deviate much from what she eats and if you give her anything then she usually doesnt eat. I have tried to be even strict with her and gave her some foods which she didnt eat and we had this thing for 48 hours and she well stayed hungry rather than eat something which she didnt like and in end i gave up and hand fed her to her things only.

I only heard something like that but they say that so my dog wont be picky with his food but until now we just decided to stick to the same brand.
