Do you make regular visits to the dentist for a routine check-up?

We are supposed to visit our dentist every six months and there is a very humorous poem by Ogden Nash where he calls it a 'vicious circle’. After humorously describing the horrible experience with the dentist, he calls it a vicious circle because one has to maintain proper oral health in order to avoid the dentist and one has to keep visiting the dentist regularly in order to maintain oral health.
Though we know that this ought to be done, I do it only when there is a problem.
Please share.

well it like that for me too , actually i even dont remember when i last visited a dentist , i think it was many years back. i dont have any oral problems so i dont need to visit a doctor. my father who is a doctor himself always suggest that i should visit a dentist once in six months but i always disobey him ..well i only brush once in a day and still im not having any cavity or so , but i think i will be needing to visit a dentist so that i can solve one of my birth born problem with one of my teeth, it is not in proper lining so i want to make it proper ,so a recent visit would be made.

The poem is awesome with all those metaphors of diging road with the most crudest of instruments and you have to still keep your mouth wide open and stuffs like that, humour is at its best.
Going to a dentist is supposed to be easier for me than many others since its a few steps away from my desk with the orthdontists and cosmotodontists greeting me every now and then. But I drag the mental appointments as much as I can. May be an annual check up - that's it., which compared to most is not bad. Last time I saw a dentist was a few months ago when I thought I need to do bit of cleaning. I am very much fidgety about mt teeth and everytime I have a headache I rush for a thorough brushing. It does help! The dentist told me that my teeth are in perfect shape and form. He advised a more often flossing. Flossing!! I just hate flossing and fine every reason to skip it! But now, I am better with it.

It works for me and my mom teases me with that. How can brushing have anything to do with headache! But seriously it does help me. Some of it could be mental but it works for me.
We have been having a lot of patients of late. It doesn't feel nice though, to see ill people all around you. And i am working on MD, which is keeping me busy these days. I just came from casting my vote. It was pretty much smooth. Another holiday and with our television not working, i will be on net the whole day.
Could you please send me your AC link?

Hi Kala,
You are right, oral health is also very important one and we should maintain good habits for protecting our teeth. Once a dentist told me the same, we should visit dentist in every six months. But I am also like you when there is a problem then thinks about a dentist. Actually I can’t remember my last visit (lol). I had removed my wisdom teeth (five years ago from both sides) it was really painful and after that there is not much disturbance with my teeth. I am thinking to visit a dentist when I visit my native place because the charges are comparatively less there (reasonable).

Before I retired and still had dental insurance I always got my six monthly check ups. However now as a senior citizen Medicare does not pay for dental work and the insurance policies are way too expensive for me I can not afford to pay for dental check ups. It costs about $400.00 to get an annual check up with x-rays and treatment without insurance.

I never make regular visits to the dentist for a routine checkup. When i was small i used to visit the dentist when i had pain in the tooth. and it was shaking badly. He used to remove the tooth. Now when i have pain in the tooth i just pop calcium pills so the pain disappears from my mouth.I will also put a mouth gel to sustain hte pain for some time. Then later the problem will go away.

I think I am the same kala. I go only when I am in pain and the situation is desperate and needs dentist's attention. I have gone only a couple of times to the dentist so far. I have had no major problem with my teeth so why go LOL, but what you say makes sense, it gives good business for the dentist...

The last time I visited a dentist was 17 years ago. I went to a new dentist few months back and I told her about the 17 years period and she was shocked. She was expecting a very dirty and problematic patient but she was surprised to see I keep my teeth in good condition.
But seriously, one ought to visit a dentist at least once a year, preferably twice a year. This is to prevent certain illnesses which can be pretty bad for the person.

Then obviously your teeth are in good condition Once I visited a dentist for a tooth problem ;when I asked him if it needed some maintenance he said there was no need and cleaning unnecessarily would weaken the enamel. But now I tend to disbelieve hima bit because, one of my teeth had a black spot it and I asked him to check it.he jsut said thta it wa sa a stain and I needed to brush it.But later, after afew years that tooth has been eroded and is now waiting to pose a problem one day.

When I was growing up, I always went to the dentist every 6 months. I haven't been in years now, mainly because I dont have dental coverage on my insurance and it's SOOOO expensive. If I have a problem, I would figure out a way to pay for their service, but a couple hundred bucks just for an "all clear" just isn't in my budget.

I do not visit the dentist every six months like you should. If I had then my teeth would not be in the shape it is. I am trying to get my children to go to the dentist every six months like they should. My son does now if I could get my daughter to go.

I don't go to the dentist either unless I feel that there is something wrong with my teeth. I guess during hard times, people tend to overlook this regular check ups especially when you have to pay everything you go for check ups. I think the dentists would also understand why people only go to them when they are already feeling pain..

No, I dont go, until it is efficient. I go to dentist very rare. Ogden Nash just described about the pain of teeth. I think i dont experience that pain till 30 years..

It it recommended that people go to the dentist every six months in order to maintain good oral health. I start visiting the doctor, I'm not sure when now, but i think I am lazy in visiting the dentist again. They told me to come back in six months but I usually forget. Even for a cleansing, I had it badly back then. Lots of blood comes out from your mouth. I remember visiting the dentist to have my wisdom teeths pulled out and it was a horrible experienced because he did not even give me medicine to put me to sleep. I had to be awake for the whole operation. It definitely was something.

I don't go to dentists regularly. Like you, I only go when it is really needed already. I always go to my dentist just once a year. I never go more than once a year. I just take care of my teeth like brush three times a day and floss so that there would be no problems which could warrant a visit to the dentist.

It truly is a vicious circle. I have a dental phobia and I think my parents did too, because they hardly ever took us. My dad now goes regularly but my mom won't. I am always in a panic attack when I even get a cleaning.
