linux operating system

operating system is a system software which is an interface between the hardware and the user.presently i am using Windows XP and it is slowing down the performance of the system.
And i am planning to shift to linux.so any one using linux os can suggest me regarding which version to use and how to operate.this would be a great help to me.

Hi 23uday,
I think you can try Ubuntu linux as it's installation process is generally easy to understand and its hardware driver and package (software) collection are generally up-to-date. If you want to start an experience in linux world, I suggest you to use it.
Please download its installation dvd from original source... Its safer.

Your welcome, please try to join a linux community. Well, you might found several interesting hints or tips that might speed up your working time there. There are too much good linux community to mention here. I believe you have your own favorite search engine too - use it to search them. Learn from simple thing and slowly try to gain more and more.

I dont know, i installed linux once, that is redhat, i dont know the proper version but i have to type everything in the command prompt and i just dont like it. It is not user friendly like windows. I came to know it is very secure than windows and my brother said i want to use linux thats why i installed it and now i uninstalled and currently using the same windows. thanks.

Yup, i heard about ubuntu but i have not tried it on my computer. may be in future i will try it but am not sure. Is ubuntu looks very similar to windows, can u tell me the advantages of ubuntu over windows.

I have never used Linux before. I have always used Windows XP. It works fine for my computer.
