Are you familiar with the functions on your computer keyboard?

I still can’t help but laugh at myself. I am so dumb that everyday for many years I work on my laptop but still I’m not familiar with the functions on the keyboards. Early this morning I told my brother that the light from the monitor seem too bright that it hurts my eyes. I asked him could there be a way to lessen the brightness. He laughed and showed me how to do it.
I know there are functions on the keyboard. I just don’t know what they are for . Sometimes I’d like to try what will happen if I press this and that but I’m afraid something might get deleted or something bad will happen. I’m not that good in computers. I just know how to type hehe.
How about you fellow lotter? Are you like me?

Well, it is hard to remember all of the functions of shortcut keys on your keyboard, even for computer majored professional people. It may be possible to identify the function of a single key because it often has an icon on it which is very inspiring. The hardest thing is to remember those functions of key combinations, like shift/control/shift plus blah blah. Some of them are just not used frequently, so there's no need to bear all of them in mind.

Yeah I know all of the keyboard functions are hard to remember especially those using combinations. But still I'm interested to learn them.
Believe it or not I once had known the functions and even wrote it down but after years of not often using the computer I forgot all of them except for the ctrl+atl+del hehe.

I know everything that each key does, I know what to press to do anything, and I know what to combine to make something happen.
Everything just comes naturally to me, everything makes sense, I am actually very good with a computers keyboard.

Yes, I'm familiar with the functions of my computer keyboard. I used to use shortcut keys for copy, pasting, cutting, etc. Sometimes when I photoshop, I used the shortcut keys for the tools~ since its faster than using mouse and hovering it to the menu corner.

I used to be, but when I learning programming I came to know even the ASCII codes in the keyboard, lol. I strived to learn coz I have a classmate before, he's the only one in class who has a background on computer and we all seem to know nothing about the subject. I asked him how to delete a sentence above a certain paragraph, I was also paranoid touching any key when I'm unfamiliar with it, but he answered with an irritating tone asking me to read what I'm doing so I'll know what to do... from then on, I bought some books and now I'm a more advanced user...
Don't worry! It won't explode, if you're not familiar with the command there's only a slim chance that the system will go wrong. What you can do is totally irreversible, just remember what you pressed last so the one who'll fix it will know what to do. The people who know much about programming are usually the ones who have a strong chance in ruining a system by corrupting it. So don't worry, its normal for beginners...

Oh is that so?? You mean whatever I accidentally press is totally irreversible? Well then I'm glad to know that cause you're right, I'm have the idea the my laptop might explode hehe. But I think there could still be one problem.. I normally type fast and don't look at the keyboard often so I won't be able to figure out what key I last pressed.

oh, im sorry, i meant its reversible... its a typo, I never had a chance to edit my post coz i'm still under 500 posts... well its reversible, meaning it can be fixed as long as you know what you pressed last... if you know programming there's a huge chance that a computer won't even start to run if you have tweaked the system settings and the code that makes it work... whatever keys you find in the keyboard are safe to press... you'll just enter an unfamiliar page...

Oh hi there mybernz! About your question which I am proud to say that I have recently learned how to, anyways, in general if keyboards are usually made the same, try to see if there's a drawing etched on a key that looks like a sun. There are two of them actually, one for making the light brighter and the other is to make it dim.
My keyboard has the Fn key colored orange. Maybe yours could be of different color. I think the Fn stands for function and you need to press it together with the other shortcut functions. In your case, the key for adjusting the light on your screen.
Hope that helps.

I'm also not good in computer and I don't have much idea with the functions! I've learned of how to adjust the brightness of the screen few months ago, but I want learn how to download movies, so I don't have to ask my Husband about it. I've seen him do it a few times, but I can't hardly remember it, lol. I am also afraid to try pressing some keys because I'm afraid that I might delete some important files.

I am also not so good with computers but when I became a technical support representative then I learned a lot about computers. I never some short cuts with the keyboard usage. I learned more about browsers and how to manage the settings. I learned about the control panel and device manager. I also learned some key combinations to do a command. My husband is a very excellent when it comes to computers and I admire and envy him for that. But nevertheless I am proud of him because he is really good. He knows about Windows and Apple and the rest of the operating systems. I wish I could have at least half of his knowledge about computers.

Control panel and device manager, hmmmm... Yeah I think I have come across those two when I studied Microsoft office long long time ago. But now I have forgotten about them. I only see them when I accidentally press a key on my keyboard. Just don't know what key it is hehe.

Hi Iskayz. Nice to meet you.
I use the keyboard more than mouse. So, I am familiar with some of the keyboard functions, such as the F key, alt+, ctrl+, tab, etc..
Working with the keyboard more quickly than with the mouse.

I know most of the keys on the keyboard are for certin things. I have no clue on how to use them. If I dont know I acculity have to call my brother which whorks on computers. I mean he fixes them as well. So if I have any computer problems I call him to fix it. I asked once before for him to help me but he never took the time to teach me.. So for now on I just use simple text. :)

Oh I'm sorry to hear that your brother did not teach you. Maybe he's too busy to do that. One thing I can share with you though is that there is a site on the internet where you can find all the lists of shortcut functions. Try searching on "alt functions", if I'm correct. I saw it once but really never took the time to memorize every functions.

Having majored and working in the computer field, I am actually familiar with the keyboard and most of it's functions. I am positive that there are some that I might not be aware of. One that I found that amazed me a little over a few months ago was that I could use the buttons on my keyboard to adjust the sound on my system. That was actually amazing because I had not even installed any software for the keyboard. It was a plan $10 keyboard that had some functionality to it other than it's main purpose.

Oh yeah the shortcut volume on the keyboard and I know that! But like you I've just learned it recently hehe.
I didn't know that we have to install a program for the functions on the keyboards. I am using a laptop and I remember I don't see ant shortcuts on my desktop's keyboard. Maybe new brand of laptops now has built in functions or something like that.

My keyboard is a gaming keyboard, I have absolutely no idea what I can do with this thing. I have a whole bunch of random buttons such as "G1, G2, G3, M1, M2, M3 etc...". Hopefully one day I will be able to master these buttons, but for now, I am stuck in the dark haha!

No, not at all. I still have some keys here which i don't know the functions. I don't know too what will happen if i press them. Just to be safe, i just try not to. I'm quite familiar with the letters and characters though. I don't know yet about hot to control the monitor's brightness using the keyboard. Maybe some keyboard has that function but i think mine has nothing like that.
