This Man Is For THe Birds~~The "Duckman Of Spokane Does It Again"

Looks like Joel Armstrong's claim to fame is to be known as the "Duckman". Armstrong is a loan officer at Sterling Bank in Spokane, Washington and this isn't his first claim to fame as the "Duckman" Last year the same exact thing happened and it happens to be a popular email forward going around. Last May nearly the same time as now, a mother mallard duck had laid ducklings two floors up on a ledge---you can see the pictures and entire story here: http://www.stumbleupon.com/toolbar/#url=http%253A%252F%252Fwww.sonnyradio.com%252Fduckstory.htm Joel Armstrong was concerned about the mother duck and ducklings as it is customary for a mother duck to take her "children" to water within 48 hours after they hatch, so the next day, very early in the morning, Joel watched as the mother duck flew down and was trying to encourage her babies to jump off and fly to her. Problem? Yes, the ducklings couldn't fly! He watched in horror as one of the ducklings jumped off the ledge and came crashing down---when the next duckling was about to do the same, Joel intervened and managed to catch each duckling as it jumped off the ledge..once all the babies were down he placed the ducklings into an empty box, holding it low enough so mama duck could see them and took them to the nearest open area of water which was the Spokane River several blocks away---once there mama and her babies jumped into the water and to safety. Well, looks like history has repeated itself...it's not known whether it's the same mother mallard duck, but she has been given a name of Amelia Duckheart---and yup--the female duck laid twelve eggs which then hatched...and yup--the drama was to begin again for Joel Armstrong---he came to work at 5:45 a.m. just when a repeat performance was to take place...the mama duck flew down enticing her babies to jump and follow her. With the skill of the greatest baseball catcher, Joel Armstrong patiently waited as each duckling jumped of the ledge and caught 8 of them..the last four he had to climb up a ladder to get them. Once again too, he and a group of people corralled and herded the mama duck and babies to the Spokane River along a parade route, since later that day a parade was to take place---you can just imagine the people's faces waiting for a parade and instead see a "parade" of ducks walking along the route This time several videos caught the event and I wish to share them with you: http://abcnews.go.com/video/playerIndex?id=7619605 http://blogs.abcnews.com/theworldnewser/2009/05/the-duck-parade.html An article about this event (also with a video) http://www.komonews.com/news/local/45367342.html Anyway I JUST had to share this--don't ask how many times I've watched this video and go --AWWWWWWWWW------who says there aren't kind people in the world? Way to go Joel Armstrong!!

how cool is this! I remember seeing the pix last year - even seen them miscredited to San Antonio - but I knew the river was too big for San Antonio (the thing they call a river there we call a creek in AUSTIN!) much less the rest of the country!

Yes, I only just got that email forward to me sent to me the other day by a friend and it said San Antonio---when I heard this story I was able to connect the dots and realized it was the same man as last year who saved the ducklings then--

Good on you Joel! What a hero! It warmed my heart so much to watch the video; what a nice man, thank goodness for him! I wonder if mother duck knew Joel might help her and that is why she birthed in the same place again. I love the 'parade'! Joel Armstrong is a legend and we need more like him in this world, if only everyone cared about animals like that...

How society views and protects the weak speaks about the nature of the people involved. Joel is a jewel. That is his nature. Maybe there is hope for mankind yet, to be actually "kind" It also lets you know where the inspiration for the story Make Way for Ducklings had its foundation. It seems mother ducks have been nesting dangerously for many years. I caught some of this on television this morning.

Not only mother ducks unfortunately---for many years Peregrine Falcons often have been making nests way up high on various skyscrapers here in NYC

Very cute story but I have to wonder at the authenticity when the story keeps saying "nine" ducklings and the photos very clearly show ten.

Just a minor mistake no doubt on the author's part---the whole incident has been recorded/reported at several sources both times--the last time the whole thing was video-taped when it was twelve ducklings

This is the sweetest thing I have heard in a long time. Thank you SO much for sharing this story. It's exactly what I needed today. It's been a crazy day, and I haven't felt good and have been depressed and down in the dumps. It just lifted my spirits tremendously!

now that's heartwarming. a friend of mine a while back had sent me something similar about a peregrine on something called the "winnipeg falcon cam".same thing, birds on building, only this time they were in danger from roof flooding.one of the employees of the hotel repelled down the side of the building attempting to save the chicks, but unfortunetly he was not in time. they needed a joel armstrong!

A lot of peregrines are in danger in my neck of the woods since the "moma" falcons like to make nests way up high on Manhattan's skyscrapers--I wonder how many of the babies have a gruesome fate

Hey pye! Nice to see you typing again! And what a wonderful story to type! I loved this story! I also watched this video countless times! That is one of the cutest videos ever! That banker guy deserves some kind of medal for catching those little babies like he did and making sure that them and their momma got safely to the river! That was just so precious to watch! I could still watch it over and over again! Now that's the kind of story I like to watch in the news! What a wonderful hero tha guy is! Nicely done Joel! You are my hero!

Pye- I am really behind on my emails, but I finally got to ths one and it was worth it. What a heartwarming story, and one that is so needed right now. With all that is going on in the world, it is nice to know people are still helping out the creatures of the world as well. I'm not sure why she'd come back, other then it is what she knows. Thank you so much for sharing this. Namaste-Anora
