A friend of mine here on MyLot posted about he missing 13yo w/ cancer that they did not believe in anything but natural remidies and the Mom & child are on the run. And it reminded me I was reading an article the other day in the paper about a similar situation and it's even more heartbreaking.

We have parents that belive in healing via faith only. Thier daughter had undiagnosed diabetes. From what I have read previously that this child was very very ill because the parents only believe in faith healing. The child has died and the Mother is facing second-degree reckless homicide and 25 years in prison (the Father's trial has not come up yet).
Should the parents be prosecuted for their beliefs that lead to their childs death? One has a choice to recieve medical treatment.... did the child have a choice in her treatment? or her death? Is the law overstepping ones religious freedoms?
What do you think?

I believe people are entitled to have different opinions on how to do things and to refuse medical treatment. However, in the case of a minor who isn't able to make big decisions like this on their own, I think we have a responsibility to give them the life saving treatments they need so that they can grow up to an age where they *can* make these decisions. If they stay alive until the age of consent but then decide not to continue treatments, that is their decision.

There are several issues here. First I do believe that God can and does heal people; however He also gave humankind talent and knowledge to develop many great medical technologies and medicines. He wants us to take advantage of the opportunities that He has given us. He has given us a way to cure the problem, He has already supplied the healing; people just want to brag about some miracle when God is saying to use what He has already given. Secondly, I do believe that people have the right to choose or not choose medical treatment for themselves and their children, unless that choice could potentially cause harm to others. For example, not vaccinating your children because there MAY be (totally unproven, by the way) a link to autism or something else that most likely is genetic is rediculous. Not vaccinating will cause epidemics of diseases to come back. That is proven. Which is why people lost their lives trying to discover ways to combate things like polio and MMR. Or when the result of lack of medical attention will cause the child to die. In that case the mom is a murderer. She set out purposely to deny her daughter the medical attention she needed, and without will without a doubt die. I think the parents should be prosecuted, otherwise other ignorant individuals will see that and feel they can do the same.

I think it is depend on the reason of the parents whether it is rational or not. But I think the parents should not be prosecuted since it is their right to choose the medication. Furthermore, no body can guarantee that the daughter would stay alive if she got medical treatment.

I really don't understand the people that only believe in faith healing. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong in believing in God and having faith that he will help you. However, some illnesses really need medical attention. I think that if you don't even try to get someone help to get them better than that is basically murdering someone. Why wouldn't people do everything they could to try and help their loved one get better?

Hi there 3SnuggleBunnies;
This is very touchy subject. I feel this way about it, I know that there has been a lot of medical discoveries in the past years but, I think people should have the right to choose what they want to do with their lives. Now when there is a small child say under 10 years old they should go to a doc tor because they are so young and should have treatment. Like I said this is a subject where you will get so many opinions on it. I feel for that boy and his mom. Take care and happy mylotting to you as well.

I think what the parents really need is some psychological treatment.How on earth can any parent leave their kids to suffer.Either they have gone mad or they deserve the punishment.No parent will ever let their kids suffer.They will be willing to try anything to save their child.At least I'll b trying.
I think every person have the right to live.That is more important than any right to religious freedom or anything.What did the child do to deserve such a fate??
This is disastrous.
The parents for whom their own child's life is unimportant deserve to be behind bars.This faith healing thing might have been just an excuse to getting rid of her child.
Are we living in a world where the mother child relations has no value at all.
No mother, no parent will EVER do this.They should be prosecuted.If they deny someone the right to live.They are doing the worst crime.
