i have to say most of my bosses i have had havent been too bad but i know a lot of people that cant seem to get ONE good boss over several jobs not to mention a lot of them.. why does it seem that so many bosses are cruel or bad at their job now a days? i mean it seems like some of these guys get promoted with out knowing anything about the jobs under them!
so have you had a lot of bad bosses or have you been lucky and had a lot of good bosses? have you stayed at a job you hate because of a good boss? do you think some people just cant have any good bosses because their personality?

I used to have a very mean boss before and I quit cuz of him. He used me to do this and that, non stop and always mean and never look straight at me while he was talking to me. He is totally mean, but I am happy to leave my job cuz I dont to work for someone that they dont like me and I am not going to waste my time with these kind of people either. Now, I am my own boss and I have 3 employees under me. I never treat them bad, and I always give them reason if I complain.

I think good boss and bad boss doesnt really exist.the term used is just to categorize them into how they react and act towards your way of working and how things are done and they are meant to help you be a better worker and can achieve what they want you to do...

I have had quite a few really good boss but I have had my share of crappy bosses. I have stayed at jobs that I really hated b/c the boos was good and treated the employees justly - bonuses and awesome co-workers help too though.
Most bosses seem to be pretty good, I think some people bring out the worst in others, thats why they always get the crappy bosses LOL

Yes, definitely I think that there is such a thing as "Good Bosses" and "Bad Bosses". I have had both but thank God I have had more "Good Bosses" than "Bad Bosses".
I don't really think it has much to do with the employee's personality so much as it has to do with how the boss manages his or her employees. I personally hate bosses who are micro-managers. I have never needed to have a supervisor constantly hovering over me and it would bother me to no end when they would do that to me.
I have stayed at a job I loved that paid well but my boss was just awful. I did that for about 5 years. I no longer work there but my supervisors I had were just awful and nitpicky.
Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

Hi Moonlit,
It guess it depends on what or how you would define "good boss". But I can tell you that being a "good boss" doesn't necessarily mean that you know how to do the jobs under you. Your job is to make sure that you have someone in place that does know how to maintain the position. Your job is to make sure that you can delegate in a manner that will get the job done. Your job will ususally require a lot of administrative duties. If the boss needed to be able to work every position under him it would be no need for most of the employee's under his supervision.

yeah but he needs to know a little about what he is overseeeing though.. especially when he likes to change the way people work and it ends up making a lot of mistakes and it all has to be redone and changed back

yes i do believe there are good boss'. My current boss is spectacular!
He isn't nasty or rude and allows me to do my job without hounding me constantly.
We get along just great and he gives me alot of space. He never gives me a hard time about taking any days off which is a major plus! All in all i believe the only reason i'm there is because of him. So yes, there are still good boss' out there.

Salaried job is something that you have to mentally accept sombody (who is your supervisor or you may call him boss) as a person who is senior to you, has the authority to give instructions to you and you are to accept his/her instructions. If we involve ourselves in the controversy of a good boss or bad boss we cannot pull on with that. Irrespective of what you feel about your boss if you continue performing your duties with commitment, hard work, devotion and dedication, I think that is the key to your success and your success is the one that will force your boss to mould his/behavior. May experience of many years has proved to be true in most of the cases. When I joined a certain job I was initially told by me peers that "he is a very bad boss". But in a matter of only a few months their opinion proved to be wrong. The very boss whom they described a bad boss proved to be very nice and kind to me. There may be some exceptions as well that a bad boss still continues to be a bad boss but given your hard work and dedication, you will get its reward from somewhere. So continuing doing good job still holds the key to your success even if at times you have to work with a person who you think is a bad boss.

I certainly agree with you that despite your being good and proficient in your work you still cannot please your boss. But my point was that if you continue putting in more hard work and commitment in your job and even if you leave that job your boss will realize that and he will continue remembering you for years. There may be a chance that in your new company you get new management and the boss who are really good.

you can do a great job but if you have the wrong boss it wont matter.. i know some people their bosses just run them off and fire people with no grounds and every one that works with the fired employee can even go to corporate to testify otherwise but it never helps.. of course in TN a lot of companies are like that anyways

Hi.
'Good Boss' to me is a very rare species. I have seen so many of those and almost none of them have been good. Specially in present times, when almost everyone is facing a slowdown, they are not at their normal self.

I think there is...I think i have one lol. The first "good" boss i've ever had. I found though the things i didnt like aobut other bosses i had were - infexibility, of course the not paying me for the hours i worked really really rubbed me the wrong way with one boss...One boss probably WAS a good boss except she scared the heck out of me.
My boss currently he's pretty good about things like vacation and letting us know if he thinks we need to change how something is done. However i will say that hes kind of a backseat boss we dont see him much...and usually its because hes ready for a break/chat when we do see him. My co-worker and i basically run the business except for the payroll and bill paying bit...even that he has us make out the cheques for bills and he signs em.

Oh its not that he's lazy - its that he has a job with another company and he spends the majority of his time working on web design for that company. I actually appreciate the fact that he trusts us enough to just leave us in charge. (plus then hes not going and ordering a bunch products he things are a great deal but never sell after he orders them...and hes not making a mess of my work area trying to help when hes occupied otherplaces!

i have stayed at a job that is not my really desire, it was just my stepping stone in achieving my real dream, but of course i have stayed there long because of my good boss. His continuous support and understanding really helped me in doing my best in my work... It depends on people on how they see their bosses... Maybe they are just like strict so that the workers will be disciplined and do their works properly. I had been lucky because I really had a good boss... And I hope in the future, I can have other good bosses too whom can understand me...

I have worked in many jobs over many years and I can honestly say I had only one good boss. He was a horrible businessman but a decent and caring person and really was a good boss. unfortunately his bad business choices caused him to close the business and my run as working for a good boss only lasted 18 months. but at least i know what it is like to work for a good man. i am sure i will never see that again!lol! i seem to have been attracted to bosses who were abusive and disrespectful.

Fortunately there is such a thing. I have changed about 6 jobs so far and there has been only one that was so kind that sometimes it was scary. He would treat all of us so nicely and instead of yelling for a mistake we made he was always bringing up the topic of how good we were and how much better we could do it the next time. And it makes a huge difference working in such an environment. Was the first time that I woke up excited about going to work. We were a great time with a great leader. I tend to believe that because of the workload and stress the people who are in charge lose their patience and release their frustration on people who often times have nothing to do with it.

Yes, i believe that there is such thing as a "Good Boss".. I worked as an student assistant in my University.. My boss is the Personnel Officer so I first thought that she is that cruel or hot-tempered.. But after few weeks, I found that she is really a good person and she always give advices to us and always trying to understand our situation even if we've done mistakes.. I think it's just a misunderstanding why a lot of people say that they have a "Bad Boss".. yes there are but most of the bosses are "Good"..

Lots of companies have a promote from within policy & often that means promoting someone beyond their ability. Once they have a position that they can barely function in their boss won't remove them because that proves that he was wrong in giving them that position. You end up with incompetence getting rewarded & lots of poor quality bosses. These people then block the competent people from advancing. Without the competent people under them to fix the messes they'd be in trouble. You end up with idiots telling the intelligent people what to do! That's what happens when you have a society which doesn't hold people accountable.
I've had lots of poor bosses. I recently got demoted for being too good at my job & making my superiors look bad.

I guess each of us have our own perspectives and definitions of a good boss. Some people say they have good bosses because they allow them freedom and will not check on them on their work, but some might think their bosses are not concerned about employees welfare. I've good bosses so far but I can't say they're perfect. They have their shortcomings too. It depends how we look at things from another perspective and sometimes there might be a blessing in disguise.

Once upon a time I was a boss....I hope a good one. At least I had very low turnover and tried my best to keep everyone happy. I think too many people get to have issues with control after they get a promotion....so it's easy to see why a common joe suddenly becomes a tyrant after they reach a certain point. I for the most part have had good bosses. I think everyone has issues or disagreements.....

I have had four jobs and I have yet to get a "good" boss. Ever one of my bosses were arrogant *****. Yeah you get the picture. I have yet to be happy with any of my jobs BECAUSE of the bosses. I am looking for a job now and hope when I find one that the fifth time will be the charm. I think alot of bosses let their position go to their heads like they are "better" then their employees and that makes for an absolutely HORRIBLE boss.

hardly would a staff call his or her boss a good boss these days, and the reason is not far from the fact bthat bosses will always want staffs to put in the best for there services and they want to make money at the detriment of their staffs so i dont really thing there can be a true good boss in the eyes of the staffs

I have amazing bosses at my job now...yes, bosses, plural. My last job though was awful - Management cared nothing for accuracy, just speed - and it drove me up a wall when I was singled out for *gasp* correcting other peoples' mistakes (on insurance policies!) and taking too much time. There ARE good bosses out there...but they're hard to find!
