Loose coins in the house

Cleaning up my room, I realized that I got a LOT of loose coins everywhere!!! Under the bed, inside cabinets, inside bags, nook and crannies of the room!! I was able to collect more than 100 pesos worth of coins in my room alone!!! I saw some coins in our dining area, and in other rooms as well. I guess the family vehicle is not exempted on this as well!!!
Our central bank released some advertisments to encourage people to not keep coins as a saving tool, but to maximize the use of banks. It seemed that the production of the coins is expensive that its value (I guess...)
Though it is not intentional, leaving change in the house, became habitual, more because bringing them in our bags is a bit of a burden.
Need to change my attitude on this.
What is your opinion on this habit?

I know have many coins in the house and everywhere... but everytime I see them, I just collect them to one place. last time, when I did my brother's laundry I found like almost $50 in this laundry basket... I gave him half and keep half :)... well, he was about to pay me anyway but then I told him that I found your money so you dont have to pay me and I just keep half of it. he agreed with me tho.
I always have a big jar just for coins... and always drop in it whenever i have or find them. may be someday these coins worth a lot

Hi smileonstar!!
Having a big jar is a nice idea, maybe I'll put it near the entrance so that me and my family can just deposit their coins there!!! (LOL, I might even paste on a picture of a troll on front!!!)
I do agree, these coins, if placed collectively, is worth a lot (heavy though!!!)
Thanks for your response!!!

My mom has a jar. We had that one filled and a ice cream bucket filled afterwards too. In 3 years, we had about $3000 worth of change, and I used alot of the loonies and toonies.

Hi cher913!!
Hey that is a very nice idea! Making it a family activity!!! I like it! I might try the same here, and coax my two little nieces to help me out!!!
It reminded me of a friend of mine, who actually puts coins in a bottle, but specifically the 5 and 10 peso coins (the biggest valued coins that we have) and after a year I think, her collection gave her a trip to an out of town beach!!!
It is somewhat an indirect savings as well, since these spare change are treated as such, and is not felt much by all of us!!!
Thank you for your response!!!

Most of the change that I find is in the washer (hubby) or vehicle again the hubby leaves it there. I had started a container and started saving it. Lately thou our 2 year old has been hoarding it all! She sees it and says Mine Mine and then puts it in her bank. LOL! Either way it does add up.

Hi Ithink!!!
Its so cute!! Your two year old collecting her coins!
You know, you keep it in her bank, or have is deposited in the bank, and when she reaches 7 years, she can buy what she wants from the money she collected!!! That may be nice!!!
Thank you for your response!!!

As for me, I always want to have a coins in my wallet. I don't care whether it gives burden to me. The reason why I do love coins its because I used it to pay for the transportation since I commute everyday. I hate to pay using bill in the jeepney because the jeepney driver doesn't give the my exact change and I hate to keep them reminding about my change. So, if possible I like to have many coins in my wallet so that I wont find difficulty in paying.
Well, I always collect new coins and I have my own piggy bank on where I put my new coins. All of the coins I collect are all new coins. I feel bad when I used new coins in paying at the grocery or in the jeepneys. I just love collecting or keeping new coins.

Hi kissie34!!
I do agree with you, I also had a hard time when the minimum fare was at 8.50.... when the driver does not have .25 coins (no .50 in circulation right?), it is either the driver who would feel cheated or you if you get shortchanged by .50!!!
Now that is is 7.00 it is a bit easier.
Like you, I do also love to collect the new coins, they are soooo shiny!!! LOL
Not only that, also the crispy paper money!! The ones that are issued to circulation on Christmas? hahaha
Thank you for your response!!!

I think my coins would not scatter around everywhere, I am very sensitive to CASH, haha, I won't let it out of my wallet. But yes, sometimes, coins appear in places where I don't expect it should be appear, it sometimes surprises me and makes me quite happy when I find them in pockets of my jacket. My hubby has this habit and I can see the coins are everywhere, you can find it on his desk, on the bookshelf, in our dining table or somewhere you even don't find it until I clean my place. I don't blame him but really like him to change this habbit. Some shops in my country even don't accept coins in small face amount, so keeping them does really waste the value of those, so it is better to deposit those to the bank.

Hi HelloMickey!!!
Hmm...patience may be a virtue, a nice idea would be collecting all the loose change your hubby leaves, then once it is enough, buy something that you would surely like, then tell him where the funds came from? LOL
If some of your stores do not accept coins in small face amount, then it is really ideal to have them deposited at the bank.
Thank you for your response!!!

Hello Minesky,
I don't think I would tell him where the fund from if I bought something for myself. Yes, it is true that we don't keep too much coins, as I need to pay the charge from the bank when I deposit those coins at the bank, so it's better don't keep too much at home and I always need to find a way to use those coins.

Hi itsmevinoda!!!
Yes, the government usually issues new coins from time to time, thus phasing the old ones and they would become a collectible in the future, though I do not know when... :D
We do now have some collection of old coins here and I keep them in a single place, though a bit dirty though, they get moldy.
I know there are some collectors out there, however, I think they want these coins in mint condition, not the ones we constantly use, this I am not sure.
In our country, I was told that our old coins (like in the 70s I think) is more valuable now than our current coins, because they actually have silver content.
It is a good thing that you do the searching for coins at your home, you even get a commission out of it!
Thank you for your response!!!

woww... that is great... having extra money is always nice, isn't it??? i always keep my coins in a container as well and i use it as an emergency fund whenever i need it... so far, it is doing really well and i think it is a good habit to keep loose change... small money can add up to become big money one day... take care and have a nice day...

Hi lingli_78!
Having extra money is always nice!!
Thinking of it that way, having loose change may be a good habit, so long as you put them in one identified place, and that those coins would not just be anywhere in the house!!!
Thank you for your response!!!

i don't know what to do with these loose coins in pesos. cause no one will want to be paid in coins since they don't have value and also it is hard to count them. but since i have heard that they are expensive to make that i don't throw them. i am planning to use them in paying my grocery but i don't feel comfortable though to use to pay my grocery. i don't want to get that weird look from cashier. i would want to central bank by not throwing but keeping them inside the house will not be good either.

Hi hotsummer!!!There are some stores who favor coins, though, of course, they would definitely make a face if they receive those moldy ones (who wouldn't? LOL)
The current coins in circulation don't really have silver content, but I heard they are expensive to produce, it's more than the value of the coin, its costing our government their funds (really haha)
Thank you for your response!!!

Im pretty sure i have coins running around everywhere in my home. But i usually try to keep them in a jar so they arent actually everywhere. I do have 2 small children running around but my oldest he knows where they go so if he finds them he'll put them in the jar or in his piggy bank so no big deal. "coins" turn into money the more you collect the more money you have really. But i dont think its a bad thing if you do have them running around.

I was once like that. Having no children around, i just left the loose coins on top of cabinets, in drawers and even on the computer table until my husband reminded me of the candy jar we got free with some purchases. When that one was full he told me about the other bigger jar we received as a gift. Perhaps i should have them deposited in the bank so they circulate but on second thought...they are all so shining new the one peso coins look like silver and the five peso ones look as gold!

Hi alexandra777!!!
Silver and Gold!!! Wow, a good combination!!! I really do like those coins, though for the gold one, I would prefer the 25 cents is more goldy!!! LOL Though the five peso coin is more in value!!!
You know what, you put the five peso ones in one container, and when it is full, it would really be a big amount!!!
Thank you for your response!!!

My husband and I usually never have loose change because we use our bank cards for everything and almost never have cash on us. When we do have cash that causes us to have change we stick it in a big jug for a rainy day.
I hate carrying change on me anymore but then again there are times when I go into a store or something and my total is a few dollars and I always think "Gosh, I wish I just had cash!" I hate charging those small amounts to the bank....I have been lucky enough to not draw an overdraft over it but I just hate having that extra change lugging me down all the time.

Hi froggieslover!
Boy, you guys are lucky!!! In a way, cashless purchases is very convenient.
However, in my country, this is yet in its infant stage, and only malls accept these type of payments. So we really need those "dirty, smelly cash" hahaha LOL
When you say charging small amounts to the bank.... does your bank charge you like a service fee for every charge you make? If not, then yes, very convenient!!!
Thank you very much for your response!!!

I do have a habit of emptying my pockets in a few places and they pile up for a few days over there. But then, I place them in the old money box. Some of the coins, I wasn't going to put in my purse anyway. So I have been doing this for a few years now. Since I got married six years ago, I always have my money box (well it's not a box it has the shape of a frog!!!) ... well you got the idea. Then every so often, I count them. And it's a lot of money!!! (Last time I counted I had 15 euro) I mean, it's not a lot but it's still nice. I take them out and buy something for myself or use it in other things I need!

Hi cbhomework!!!
Nice, a froggy bank!! Cute! I would also keep that box as well!!! LOL
15 euro is already a lot, especially when these are just loose change that you do not even expect to add up to that much after a time!!! Good for you, you buy yourself good things out of it!!!
Thank you for your response!!!

I want to say I am like you.Leaving change everywhere of my house. I think it is a not good habit and it is easy to loose money and make the house draggly. Now I have a bag which is used to put changes.I put all of my changes in it. Then I never put change everywhere. And you can try the way. Have a nice day.

It's kinda funny and suspicious that just one bank was concerned about coin collecting, I thought the government was responsible for minting coins.
Maybe, they are the only ones that are concerned and maybe they alone consider it an inconvience.
My son saves coins and whenever he does wrap and take them into the bank, he usually has a couple hundred dollars worth of coin.
I thinks its a great way to save and because it's usually small change that you throw in those jars, you don't miss it and before you know it you have dollars.

Hi SunlightSwoon!!!
The central bank is our overall agency for the government that oversees all the banks here in the country, and they are also in charge of the approval of coins and its minting.
I was lucky when we were in school to have a trip there, and we were given a tour on how coins are made, even our paper money!!!
I do get a lot of suggestions to have a jar at home where you can just drop all off the loose change. I do think this is one idea I can use.
I do agree that this is a very great idea for your son to save some money!!!
Thank you for your response!!!

If you were around our house you'd find a lot of coins too. My mother comes home from work and takes out a handful or more of coins from her pockets and then puts them in completely random places. Then, the coins end up falling all over the floor and what not so you can wander all over the house and find a lot of random coins. I end up picking up coins all the time and keep them because she never really uses them how they're intended to be used. She hardly ever cashes them in at the bank and when she does, it takes her forever to get up the courage to do so.

Hi highflyingxangel!!!
Hey, that is a very nice opportunity for you to earn there!!!
The coins that I found are mostly the loose change that I myself just leave anywhere!!! So I guess it's not money to earn, it is actually money forgot! LOL
