Can you stop "phishing?"

Everyday, I get emails from Commonwealth Bank phishing for details of my account. Sometimes they come as Netlog, sometimes as Paypal, but all want the same things, my banking details. I have marked these as JUNK but some still arrive in my inbox. The last few days, I have received seven such emails daily, and one or more is in my inbox. Do other myLotters have this problem? How do you cope with it? For the record, I don't have a Commonwealth Bank account. What's more it doesn't list a country! Help please, it's driving me crazy!

I receive around 60 spams a day, I kid you not! My email account has a spam filter so the majority of the nuisance mail goes straight into it and automatically gets deleted very month or so; any that 'sneak' through I create filters for, this way I feel I have some kind of control over my emails considering I receive so much c**p from sites I have registered with in the past. I used to receive a regular one from PayPal requiring my bank details for 'security purposes; it was a scam of course because the email addressed me as "dear customer' PayPal would always address clients by their name and as far as I know PayPal and banks never, ever ask for personal details via email. Can you create a filter to stop it coming through in the future?

60 a day! That's incredible, and would tempt me to introduce my foot to my computer monitor. If I were more computer savvy, I'd probably know how to filter them out, but I don't. I'll ask one of the pros at university tonight. Thanks paula.

I’ve had a hotmail account for years, and it has changed so much that now I get so much spam, I’ve quit using it, and I don’t use the address to register things online either. It used to be that if someone or some company wasn’t in your address book, those emails would automatically be blocked. Not any more. It’s a good idea to find a free email service and set up an address just for registering on websites and using for when you order online. Just check it to keep it open for those services, and delete everything. It’s a shame that we all have to put up with all of the garbage out there online. I have an account at dcemail.com, and seldom get spam there. Good Luck

As I am aware, if you are using hotmail there is a button you can press that says "report phishing scam". You could use that if you use hotmail. Personally, I've never really had many spam letters wanting details or anything.

I think you're right, I'll have a good look. I used to only get the odd one now and again, but recently they've multiplied a lot. Maybe I visited a bad sight, but I've no idea which one it could be. Thanks for your reply.

Yeah, perhaps spammers someone got your email address or something? Either way, I hope you get that problem resolved soon. No one likes getting spammed.

well, fortunately it haven't happened to me yet... it will be very annoying if it does as i don't like people phishing into my bank account details... i will report it to the bank as soon as i can if i were in your position and let the bank do something to help me... but if you say that you don't even have a commonwealth bank account, then unfortunately nothing you can do to stop it... so sorry to hear that... hopefully other members here can give you a better solution... good luck... take care and have a nice day...

The problem is, I think they use Commonwealth Bank because many countries have a Commonwealth bank, so many people think it's legitimate. The massage refers to netlog, Pay Pal and other well known pay sites. It is easy for me to delete as I haven't had a Commonwealth bank account for fifty years. I do worry about some who think the email is from their bank and supply the details. They will find their accounts fleeced. Isn't this a crime? Thanks for your comment, my day will be great, I hope yours is too.

You may have an option to block specific email, or just report spam. I report spam and it goes directly to my spam box, stress free option...

I have indicated that this is spam, and most of them go directly there, but recently some, maybe two out of ten find their way directly to my inbox. They are easy to recognize, but it is the annoyance of it all.

I'm sorry to say that once a phisherman has a line into your eMailbox, there is no way to get him out. My Yahoo mail is a mess now because of the money making opportunities I started seeking out a couple of years ago. I just grab the ones from the clubs that I am still active on (including myLot). Different mail applications have different ways of fighting these criminals. Unfortunately reporting to the authorities is not one of them. I would love to have a [ILLEGAL ACTIVITY] as well as a [JUNK] button, the difference being automatically having the crime reported to authorities, but alas, the enforcement would probably be overwhelmed. What mail application do you use? If you can filter text and specify "Commonwealth Bank" you can move it directly to the Trash, or to any other folder if you want to look at it first to verify.

Interesting user name qaeyious, but I can't work out why the Q. Thanks for your reply. I use hotmail, and I don't know if I can filter out specified words, but I'll ask around. To me it's definitely an invasion of privacy, and I wonder just how many poor inocent people they have robed, and have any of these computer criminals been to court.

Sorry, I can't help but to smile at this because I have the exact same reaction to phishing, spamming and what else the word is for these people. They totally are a wastage of bandwidth, least to say having to delete countless of the emails. And what's up with Commonwealth Bank.... Maybe you can send one of my Mafia from Mafia Wars to look into this matter. Alright, just kidding there. Normally what I would do is that I would just report them as junk and if they still come to my inbox, I would just delete them on a certain day. Like Mondays and Wednesdays are for spamming clearance days and I will dedicate a bit of my extra time to delete them. Otherwise, I think if you are still irritated by their existence, to change email address. I think there will be never ending to this problem. But I notice for those Outlook Express type of email programs, I used to use this and rarely see spam emails. But it's been awhile since I've used this kind of program so I do not know how it is now.

Thanks for your reply zed. I use explorer, and it's good as far as advising on incoming mail, however what bothers me is that two out of ten, all from the Commonwealth Bank, don't get picked up as junk. I delete them daily. I wonder how many inocent people have handed them their bank details, and have been fleeced!
