Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable?

May 27, 2009 2:25pm CST
This is one question I have never got a solid answer too. In school I was taught that the tomato is a vegetable because it makes up ingredients to a salad and it had a very acidic taste which constitutes it as a vegetable as fruits have no acidic tastes. Now recently I heard that tomato is a fruit because it has seeds and one characteristics of a fruit is that it has seeds. So now I'm not sure where to classify this.. so help me out here... is it a fruit or vegetable or both?

Technically, a tomato is a fruit. I will always refer to it as a vegetable, because I like all fruits, and I hate tomatos But, in all seriousness, it's a fruit.

I like tomatoes in salads but I never eat it just like that.. so in all fairness I think its a vegetable as you can cook it.. you can't cook a fruit can you?

Hi Jellymonty, have you never tasted apple pie, stewed plums or gooseberry crumble?

I always classified a tomato as a fruit because it has it's own seeds...similar to banana, apple, pear, orange etc. Whereas vegetables like cabbage, suede, carrote and potato don't have this.

hi Metalchick, you are exactly right. Another way of thinking about it is that a fruit is what was previously a flower and pollinated so that the seed house develops.

This is something that I never got around to thinking about and I now realize that it is not a cut-and-dried matter. I like tomato a lot and eating it sliced with a bit of salt is wonderful. I suppose many people consider it a fruit because it used to be known as "love apple" with aphrodisiac properties. Do you know it is related to the potato? cheers!!

really? exactly how is the potato related to the tomato? is it coz they both rhyme?

Yes it is a relation of the potato. A potato plant produces small tomato like fruits when the flowers fade. They are said to be poisonous though so don't try to taste them.

It is a Fruit... and YUMMY YUMMY for my tummy..lol... I love them in Salads.. and sliced with salt and pepper on... I dont however like them on sandwiches.. but.. If i get a sandwich with one on it.. i take it off and eat it by its self. I love fruits and veggies... so... i couldnt go by that.. but, as I read, they are actually classified as both... in the botanical views it is a fruit because it has seeds... (which makes no sence to me... because... green peppers and other vegies have seeds) and in the culunary sence they are veggies because as you said.. you cook them like you would a veggie...

I think Tomatoes are fruits because they grow on a bush/tree, rather than in the ground. :)

well, as far as i know u can classify it as both..it is a vegetable as well as a fruit..but though it is mostly taught to us in primary schools as vegetable.. u can eat it raw as any other fruit and as well cook it withvegetable to prepare subzi..so i claasify it as both..ITS UNIQUE IN ITS OWN WAY...

Hi Jellymonty, A tomato is a fruit. No doubt about it. A potato is a vegetable but a potato plant produces fruit that are just like small tomatoes and contain the seed. Strictly speaking I suppose cucumbers, pumpkins and courgettes are also fruits although we think on them as vegetables.

I honestly it is fruit I watched it on TV. It is good for us it has a vitamin C and anti-cancer property. I always eat tomatoes which is not that ripe yet. Sometimes I make a dip with it I put soy sauce and salt to partner with fried fish or fried meat.
