open source actually means open source, that means that the source code for the app, is free and everyone can see and use it, usually there is a clause that says that even tho it is open source you will have to pay, if you sell open source stuff that you have altered, then the original owner will be entitled to a percentage of what you earn. hope this was helpfull;)

Well the idea behind open source is that the programs are free to be used by anyone and also edited freely by anyone. The benefit is that you don't have to pay for these but the con is that if it doesn't work properly for you then it is either up to you to fix it or wait for a bug fix. As most open source programs come out on a as is basis that means that it may work for some people and not work for others which is the major drawback. With paid programs you are pretty much guaranteed to be able to have it work as they are usually not released until a stable version is created. But the freedom that comes from open source is great, I really love linux and would not want to go back to windows no matter what.

Open source doesn't mean free software. code of open source software is available and as a developer you can make changes according to your requirement. If you are a simple user then for some software you have to pay for it. Even as a developer you have to pay some part of it to the owner of that code.
There are many reasons behind that people are shifting from microsoft to linux. One of the reason is that linux is more secure than microsoft. Linux is the operating system of developer, means you can make changes as per your requirement.
I hope this much wuld be helpful to you.
