Do you talk to yourself or know someone who does?

I admit to mumbling to myself sometimes when I'm using the computer, but other than that I'm not aware of talking to myself. I caught my partner talking to himself today - he was outside talking, and I asked who he was talking to. He replied 'I,m talking to myself, but it's ok because I was listening to myself as well'! Do you do this, or know someone else who does?

How can you argue with yourself? Do you mean something like: you say "I'm not going to paint that wall white", and then you say "yes that is exactly what I'm going to do" :) Please give an example...

I realised that the last part of your response about losing the argument was a joke, I just wasn't entirely sure about the first part - so thought I'd check!!

I often mutter to myself while I'm on the computer, actually. It helps me think more clearly. I listen to myself think, essentially. Although my mouth is slower than my head, so sometimes it doesn't really help and it's just a habit, but yeah...I talk to myself. Internally and externally.

The head can be murky, sometimes, or slow. But see, you can never turn off your ears really...even in our sleep, sounds register with our brains, even if we're not aware of it. Perhaps speaking the thoughts outloud is like a shortcut when our brains're tempted to be uncooperative...instead of struggle.

Why does it help us think more clearly though? We must be thinking it to say it out loud, so I wonder how it helps?

I was traveling on a bus once, it was in 1980, on a small Greek island. The driver seemed to have his wits together, but the ticket collector scared me LOL. After punching all the tickets he sat down on the seat in the back, and started an argument – with himself. Not that he only verbalized his thoughts, but he also seemed to be verbalizing the arguments of his opposite. I still can go along with that, but then he started to adopt the facial expression of the person whose turn it was, and since it seemed to be a fight, he started to look really funny. I’ll never forget that. Ever since then I’m very aware when I start talking to myself in a loud voice, and stop the whole thing right in its tracks LOL.

I would find that extremely worrying! I think that if it had been the driver I might have got off!

I don't talk to myself but I used to talk to the computer when I was taking programming classes and having a problem with the code. I was determined that I was smarter than that computer and I would threaten it, taunt it and then laugh at it when I finally won the battle. That's one of the reasons why I decided not to do programming for a living. Someone would have had me locked up in short order if I carried on like that in a business environment.

Yes, that's pretty much how I carry on with the computer, but luckily I'm at home, so no-one else hears me!

I like having a conversation with myself because then I know I'm having an intellectual conversation. Yeah right! Haha!
No. I do talk to myself but I don't have whole conversations with myself. You can have a conversation in your head. Why do you even need to open your mouth? Ok sometimes I do blurt out something but most of the time I have control over my thoughts.
I do yell at the computer but that is totally different. That's not talking to myself, that's blowing off steam.

Guilty! hihi Every now and then, I'd mumble to myself too. Especially when I am trying to look for something I lost. Say a notebook or a pen. Hmmm...but, I think am talking more to that something missing than to myself. I treat things as if they're animated.
I talk to myself when I am a lil sad or angry.

I talk to myself all the time, but only in certain situations. Mainly when I do something dopey like drop something or at work when I am talking to a colleague and trying to write an email at the same time, I type what they are saying instead of what is meant to be on the email. I call myself a dippy cow or something like that. I am quite harsh on myself and say what I think anybody else is thinking.
Another time is when I am trying to get my head around a complicated query or trying to figure out what's happened in a customer account. I only whisper but I do think outloud to suss it out.
I used to talk to myself more but now I have a cat so when I come home from work, I talk to her about my day. I think it's more about venting really.
In all, I reckon that talking to yourself is fairly healthy, I think it helps you get things out in the open.

I do talk to myself alot! I have for years but I mostly do it when I'm not around people! I do it when I'm lonely, stressed out, depressed and just have alot onmy mind. I am rarely caught doing it. It is like having a another personality! Maybe spilt personality sounds more correct!

Yes I also talk to my self sometimes. I think most of the people also do this. When I am studying something and it is difficult to understand or something complicated then I make myself understand it it talking to myself. I just utter the hole thing step by step in my mind and try to understand how the things are happening. Apart from that I also talk to myself when I feel depressed. Then I try to encourage myself by taking positive things to myself. I think this help me a lot to overcome depression.

Sometimes I do mutter and mumble to myself but I don't really talk to myself that much. Now, my grandfather on the other hand is always talking and mumbling to himself. It's all the time, in fact, he just said something to himself about 30 seconds ago when I started typing this response. He talks to himself at the kitchen table, while on the computer, pretty much almost everywhere he goes, he's talking to himself. I'm not sure why he does it, but he seems like a relatively sane individual so I don't think that is the problem. He's done it for as long as I can remember.

I admit that I do talk to myself occasionally. Sometimes when I'm alone in a room, or in my apartment, or something like that, I might begin talking to myself, for not real or apparent reason. it's something that I've been doing for a while now. I'm not really sure why I do it. I just do.

LOL, Yeah, I do this as well from time to time. I spend alot of time with just my kids, and I find I talk to myself when I am up at night (like tonight) mumbling things off and on, and be like wow... I really need to get out more. They always say you can talk to yourself, but when you start answering yourself that's when it get's scary. I've yet to answer myself so I think I'm in the still sane catagory.

Hi Katsalot,
I don't think i talk to myself like that. But i have the same situation like you did. When i am typeing the post like i am doing now, i am mumbling, i did not meant to do that, but its just a habit of mine. I have a classmate in high school that she talks to herself, that scares many of us, finally she left the school and was sent to a bughouse for some treatment, that even scares us more!

I talk to myself too. I think this sort of thing is just normal, especially when you have lots of things on your mind and don't have anyone to talk to. Sometimes I even practice what I would say to other people so that when I talk to them face to face I would know exactly what to say.
