Hi everyone, hope your day is going well. I am so aggravated! I would like some advice. Does anyone else have the problem of trying to lose weight, and exercise, drink water, and watch what you eat, but you just gain? Well that is my problem, can you tell it is frustrating me? I started doing the whole walking, jogging thing, and even yesterday I started riding my bicycle. I don't have access to the gym so I do what I can. I watch what I eat, and I eat small portions. What am i doing wrong? I mean I gain 1-3 pounds today and I lose 4 next week, but the scale just sits in the same spot. My body aches from my work outs, but nothing on my scale is changing. (Maybe I need a new scale. LOL, but my clothes still fit the same too. :( )Any advice? THANKS

I recently lost 50# two years ago and have kept it off, so I consider myself to be a little knowledgeable in this subject. I have a few ideas for you. 1. Track everything you eat. You might be eating a lot more than you think, or a lot less. Your food choices might be "low fat" but not nourishing your body. My favorite FREE places to track are sparkpeople.com or thedailyplate.com. You MUST do this to get an accurate picture of your nutrition. Measure everything and journal it! It's the #1 thing successful weight-losers do. Number one! 2. Get a heart rate monitor. You might THINK you're burning 800 calories in 40 minutes on the elliptical, but you're really only burning 350. There's only one way to know for sure, and that's to get a heart rate monitor. I recommend the Polar F4 or F6. They tell you how many calories you burn. 3. Stick with whole foods. If it doesn't grow from the ground or a tree or a plant, and it doesn't have a mother, you have no business eating it. Nourish your body with real food: BERRIES, vegetables, fruits, 100% whole grains, organic meat/eggs/dairy, legumes. Nutritional powerhouses - you can generally eat all you want to feel satsified and NOT gain weight on these foods. Eat organic where you can, because the pesticides mess with your hormones, which in turn messes with your metabolism. Cut out ALL artificial sweeteners, high-fructose corn syrup and anything that has "hydrogenated" on the label. Better to have a teaspoon of raw sugar than the white refined stuff or the fake stuff. All those chemicals wreak havoc on our hormones/metabolisms. 4. Strength train! Don't be one of those people who gains weight because she loses muscle tone as she ages. Our metabolisms don't HAVE to slow down as we age! 5. Protein at every single meal and snack, no exceptions. Natural peanut butter, almond butter, hummus made with chickpeas, almonds, organic milk, string cheese, a hard-boiled egg.. pair them with a fruit or veggie and you're GOLDEN! 6. NEVER skip breakfast. It sends your metabolism straight into the toilet. Eat within an hour of waking up, and it should be a filling meal that will keep you full 'til lunch. 7. Eat every 4 hours. Don't eat every 2 hours, this confuses your hormones. Don't skip meals. Studies show eating ever 4 hours is perfect to keep the metabolism humming. And no food after 9pm. Keep your carbs to breakfast and lunch, try not to carb out at dinner unless you work out in the evening. Those carbs have nowhere to go if you eat them late, and they will be stored as fat. 8. Fat is not the enemy - good fat, that is. Olive oil, canola oil, avocadoes, fatty fish. Bring it on! You will not get fat eating good-quality fat. 9. Manage stress. Stress = cortisol = belly fat. Carve out time for yourself every day, no matter what. 10. Keep medications to a minimum. Try heat/cold instead of anti-inflammatories; try a non-hormonal birth control method. It's no wonder American women are obese, hormonal MESSES, with all the garbage we put into our bodies! PMS, menopause - all these symptoms can be controlled by treating your body well.

Thanks for the tip, and I will try thedailyplate. I will try them, and I will right down what I eat. I thank you for the tips. I also definitly agree with number 10, I think that is the reason I put so much on. Now that I have not taken anything, maybe I can get my metabolism back to were it should.

Hi! I also have the same experience like yours. I gained 2 pounds after 1 week of vigorous exercise, endless diet, name it I did it all. It's really frustrating coz I really want to lose weight. One of my friends adviced me not to eat rice because it is loaded with carbohydrates. I tried avoiding food rich in carbs, and I did sit-ups everyday - believe me, IT WORKED! So what I can advice you is try to avoid eating too much carbohydrates such as pastas, rice, bread, etc.

May I ask? I put 3 spoons of sugar in my coffee in the morning, should I cut out the sugar too? I mean if you say, I will. I just want to lose at least ten pounds before August. As a birthday present to myself.

First of all, it's muscle weighs more than fat, so if you're excercising regularly, it may seem that you're gaining weight. You're not, you're gaining muscle. I've been trying to lose fat for a while myself. I recently dropped 15 lb. It's a start anyway. All I did that was different was to eat ONLY when I'm hungry. I eat whatever I want-pasta with meat sauce, corned beef hash, pizza, salad, fruit, yogurt, vegetables, etc. When I feel satisfied,I stop eating. Studies show that it's a bad idea to eliminate an entire group of foods, such as carbohydrates or meats. I would suggest checking out a fella named Paul McKenna. He has a great program called I Can Make You Thin. It's not a diet of any kind. I would NEVER diet. They don't work. By the way, if you're not eating enough, your body hoards what you do eat so you can't lose weight. I hope that helps!

Have you tried asking a professional? There was a episode I watched in Oprah saying that if you want to loose weight, you must know first yourself and your reason for loosing it. According to you, you watch your diet but is it a proper diet? Even if you ate a small portion but it is high in fat, surely, that won't help. In my opinion, I think an active sports will help you a lot. Try badminton, tennis or kick boxing. These are active sports that will really make you sweat and be patient to your weight loss. It is not as if you'll lose all fats in a day. Have a constant discipline and surely, you can do it.

well being honest 1-2 pounds aint really a lose of weight as you can reduce that just by stop drinking fizzy drinks. I think that your stressing out about losing weight too much. The think you need to do is not only watch how much you eat but like the snacks between meals too if you get used to not snakcing or eating fruit then you wil reduce your hunger and be full with a smaller portion. What might be happening is if your just drinking water then your becoming bloated as your drinking too much. try drinking some juices as well .

The only thing I drink now is my coffee in the morning, besides that it is water all the way. I am just frustrated cause I have been doing this for about 3 months now. And as far as for snacking, (because of my middle child, who loves junk food) I only have 2 bags of chips in my house (that I don't like) and the rest is fruits and vegetables. I mean I have lost 5 pounds, then my monthly friend comes around and I am right were I started. So it is a constant up and down. Thanks for the advice. I will try it.

Another thought had occurred to me - you may want to contact a nutritionist and ask about food combining. I eat a very particular way and have shed nearing 20 pounds and the weight has stayed off. First off, I eat vegan only. Its better for your body, and it treats animals ethically. Secondly, I eat as follows: Breakfast - fruits or a fruit salad, fresh mostly. Sometimes I will get dried to mix in with fresh fruit. Lunch - I do my proteins - beans/legumes/nuts/tofu/almond-milk products with vegetables on the side. Dinner - I eat my starches - brown rice/eggless noodles/potatoes, corn, with green vegetables on the side. You can eat veggies all day, yes, I said veggies with no embarassment. And I never drink anything unless it is water. ----- You might, though, consider looking into getting a juicer. It will help get more fruits and veggies (said it again) into your daily discipline. Do thirty minutes aerobics three times a week and alternate those days with toning the the other days, with one day of rest, and you will gradually slim down. Let us know how it goes.

You are preaching to the choir!! I know EXACTLY how frustrating this can be. I am a woman in my thirty's and my doctor says it is hormonal as well as water weight. I occasionally take over the counter water pills (Diurex) as far as the hormonal thing goes I really have no control over it. I try to eat what is good and discard what is bad. I find that if I eat soy based products including soy milk it helps, since soy has a high amount of Estrogen.

Quick ideas that you might be able to use: 1. Try to eleminate all sugar possible for 3 weeks and see what happens. I was able to losr 10lbs by cutting sugar out of my diet. Of course you're still going to have "sugar" - there's no way around it. A can of fruit has over 12g per serving. But if you can cut of the un-needeed sugars: pop, actual white sugar (as you mentioned, when you add it to coffee), chocolate, icecream, etc. When you get a craving, eat a peach or something sweet that has NATURAL sugar. 2. Buy some wrist weights like mine: Twitpic.com/6h3w3 or the kind that wrap around your wrist and not your hand. Start small, like 1lb per wrist then gradually move up to 2.5 then 5lbs. The extra weight tones your arms nice and the first couple weeks when it seems REALLY heavy you'll notice you sweat. This is good, you're body is starting to work. 3. Try drinking calorie burning drinks prior to your most active part of the day. You can burn around 100 calories just from the drink and moderate exercise - gym not needed. 4. See what you can make with fish. A good easy meal is Tuna Cakes. Very simple - Canned Tuna (use the in-water kind), egg, bread. Mix and bake. If you wanna be creative throw some herbs in. Taste fantastic and is very healthy. I don't even seperate the egg. Your body needs good fats. 5. In general, just stay away from processes stuff. Try to buy things that dont have added junk. I buy the "no sugar added" fruits or eat natural. If you want burgers, make Turkey burgers. If you like the "burger taste" throw some A-1 on them before cooking. Just little changes like that, without ever depriving yourself, makes the big difference.

Loosing weight is a struggle that many have. I think the key is make a lifestyle change. YOu can not just go on a diet, you have to change the way you eat all the time. Good luck

1) It is normal to lose 1 pound a week, you didn't gain fifteen pounds in one week, so expect a slow weight loss, especially if you want to keep it off. 2) Taking a calcium/magnesium/zinc combo will shed five pounds of body fat every six weeks. 3) I would get rid of the coffee all together and replace it wholly with distilled water. 4) I would get rid of all animal products. You lose weight and keep it off. Don't eat meat, poultry, fish, dairy (milk, ice cream, cream cheese, butter, cheese, etc), eggs, and honey. It's good for you, and better for the animal's lives your saving. 5) I would get some raw vegan cookbooks, and also see if you can find the movie or book, "A Diet for all reasons." ** Hope this helps.

I have the same problem. Even though people say that loosing weight is easy when they have gone through it, it's definitely not. What could be the problem is your BMI. Your body fat could be going down and the scale will still stay in the same place. But, if you keep doing what you're doing I guarantee that you will loose weight in time. It's a slow process but it is well worth it in the long run.

If you really so dedicate to bring down your weight, better consult dietician. They can provide you a good and effective recipe for you. Don't ever try to diet on your own way by eating less. It will affect your health. Hope you can lose your weight in a right way. Have a nice day:-)
