According to an article I read, entitled "Zinc - An Essential Mineral":
Foods of animal origin are the best sources: lean meat, poultry, and some seafood, liver, and, in small amounts, milk and eggs. In fact, the body absorbs zinc better from a diet rich in animal protein than from one high in plant protein. You also get zinc from whole grain foods, nuts, fortified breakfast cereals and some legumes, but phytates in those foods can decrease its rate of absorption.
It sounds like you can get plenty of zinc in your diet without eating a lot of dairy foods. I hope this info has helped.

Very good sources of zinc are calfs liver and spinach. Other good sources are sea vegetables, basil, thyme, pumpkin seeds, beef and lamb. Asparagus, shrimp, maple syrup, broccoli, dark chicken meat, peas and yoghurt are also good sources.
On average adults need an average of 11 to 15 milligrams of zinc a day.

Do you and can you eat seafood? In my case whenever I feel the need to boost up the amount of zinc in my body I would eat cockles. As far as I know shellfish are rich in zinc.
An alternative would be to partake beef, lamb, or liver because of a high level of zinc in them. Wheat germ and various seeds do contain high levels of zinc if there is sufficient level of the element in the soil.
all the best,

Seafood is a good option, pumpkin seeds is another. Bread, yeast, nuts, beans, lentils and Multigrain cereals cereals contain Zinc as well as do a lot of brand name breakfast cereals. Some dried fruit like raisins and figs do to so you might be getting more Zinc in your diet then you realize.
