Have You Ever Touched A Stingray?

My daughter and I visited the St. Louis Zoo a couple weeks ago. We had so much fun and it wore both of us out. We did almost everything they had to do there and even touched the stingrays. When I asked my daughter if she wanted to touch a stingray she asked, "Isn't that what killed the Crocodile Hunter?". It kind of threw me off for a minute and I thought, "OH, she is gonna be scared". When I answered, "Yes", she didn't say anything. When we got to go in to touch them, she was a little scared at first but she got brave and did it and after one time she wanted to do it again. It was really neat to get to do something like this. I have had other people say that they have had the opportunity to touch a stingray. It feels really soft and it sort of tickles your hand. Have you ever touched a stingray?

Us and the stingray - Me and my friends with a stingray
Actually, on the only cruise I've taken (so far) at one of our stops - the Grand Caymans - we swam with the stingrays! It was awesome! They are really cool and when they rub up against you it feels so strange! We all kissed one! This is a pic of the 4 of us holding it. It was way cool!!!

Yes, they are very soft. It was great! They'd rub up against you in the water and stuff. It was so cool being with them in their natural habitat. If you ever get the chance you should definitely do it!

No, I have not had the opportunity to touch a stingray. It does sound interesting. I hope my grand daughter will want to do things like that and enjoy them. Sounds like you and your daughter had a really good time while there.

I love to go to the ocean. I am not sure if I have ever seen a live stingray before though. I know for sure that I have never touched one. My husband may have though.

a stingray - a stringray at the zoo
Yes, I did touch a stingray. Two years ago they had stingrays at Brookfield zoo. (It's in the Chicago area). I wondered at first if I even wanted to touch one, but I did. I'm glad so now I can say, yes I did touch a singray. lol

I know how you feel. It is nice to be able to say that you have done something that a lot of other people haven't had an opportunity to do.

I have been to the St. Louis Zoo many times, but I have never touched a Sting Ray before. Whenever we go we never do make it all the way around the zoo because someone is always being cranky and making it not fun anymore. Next time we go I want to start by going and looking at things we have not seen before.

I sure have! and it was wonderful! The Mall of America in MN, USA has an indoor aquarium, and at the finish of it, they have a circular pool filled with very young rays and bottom-feeder sharks. I LOVED the rays. The sharks were very sedentary and didn't really swim much, and their skin was rough and unpleasant to touch. The rays, though, the rays! They were like water kittens. I'm note even kidding. They would zoom around in that circular pool, going past hands. You just have to dangle your knuckles in the water, and they rub up against you because they love to be petted. LOVE it. If they go by a person who doesn't have his hand in the water, they'll get your attention by flapping at the water's surface and splashing you. "Hey! Hey! Pet me!" They were also really, really soft to the touch and very clean. I would touch a ray again any day.

I've never touched a stingray. * I have however touched a sea cucumber. That is one weird experience, let me tell you. They feel like overcooked pasta or wilted flowers underwater. Very fragile, you have to handle them with utmost gentleness lest they fall apart under your fingers. * Starfish are another matter. They don't feel real or alive, even though they are both. To me, it is like holding a stiff figurine that doesn't move. Turn it over you see lots of little feet with a mouth at the center.

I was on a cruise ship excursion when I touched a sting ray. It was so cool. They are slimy and whatnot. We even got to feed them. This was several years befor the Crocodile Hunter was killed by one. I was so small, one of the sting rays really wanted the food I was holding and it tried to climb up my back until it reached my hand pushing me under for a split second. It was a little scary but I released the food and it went and got it and left me alone. I didn't panic because I knew that I had a lot of people around me and I knew to hold my breath and not move (that's what the instructor had told us younger ones). Everything was fine I popped right back up and kept swimming and playing with them...I think I was like 10 at the time.

I've touched sting rays and bay rays before. They feel all smooth and slimy. xD I'm pretty sure the rays they keep domesticated have their stingers clipped regularly, like people clip fingernails.

Yes, I'm sure the stingrays are domesticated or they wouldn't allow you to touch them. It is really a wonderful experience to do such a thing.

I just saw this. We went to the St. Louis Zoo last week and touched the rays. It was awesome. I was told they clip down the barbs like fingernails to make them safer for us to deal with. I keep forgetting you live around here too. I hope your daughter enjoyed the experience. Mine did, she wants to go do it again. FYI from 8 am -9 am it's free no $3 charge. WHo gets up that early on the weekend? LOL

I have never touch any stingray before. I have been in a situation of being near one when I was swimming but have never been so near. From what I heard, if the stingray stings you, it is very painful. I have even heard that the pain may even cause a heart attack should it stings you in the chest.

I thought it was really neat and they didnt feel like i thought they would. They were soft. Its one of those things that i can just say Hey yeah i did that. LOL

Hi Not sure, but a few years ago in Seaworld, Florida, I did touch the underside of some Rays, and gave them food which they took from our hands. Not sure if they were stingrays though

I have touched a Stingray at the Monterey Aquarium, which is about 2 hours from our home. My daughter was 8, the first time we went there and they had the rays swimming in an elongated, oblong, shallow pool. We moved here from upstate New York in 1995. You could sit on the side and touch them as they swam past. My daughter wasn't scared, but that was years before the Crocodile Hunter was killed. That would have thrown me off too! I thought they felt like velvet and it did tickle a little. It is really neat to be able to do that and I love that more and more Zoos and Aquariums are hands on now. Children should be able to experience other species.

what! i can't even believed in my entire life that i would touch that error. No, Never never never. If you remember that there was a trained person who we used to watch in the television about this guy from Australia who makes showcase and educating us about animals. but he knew the risk and i can't believe he got killed by the Stinger. i think i wouldn't be dreaming of touching that kind of fish.

I can’t say that I have ever touched a stingray. We visited an underwater aquarium once that have a lovely touch pool, we touched some kind of sea snake but, alas, no stingray! Your daughter was a brave girl, good on her; it would have been a nice experience!

I have actually touched a stingray and this was in fact because I was swimming in the ocean and I got stung by one. I didn't know what it was at first because of the excruciating pain at the moment until I got out of the water and had the lifeguard see if I needed any medical care but I have seen one at close-up and they are actually pretty cool creatures. Just haven't gotten off with the right foot with one.

Hi singlemommy, I have never touched a stingray; I'd be keeping my distance from them as much as possible. But I did touch a jellyfish at the ocean near Florida, after my dad said, "Don't touch that jellyfish, it'll sting you." I was 7 years old, and I guess I wanted to see how much it really would sting. Trust me, it stung real bad!
